Probably a bit late now, but surely we could have integrated a rainbow into our WC kit design and there would be nothing FIFA could have done?

Are armbands really against kit regulations?

At least if they wore the armband and ended up getting booked they could use that as the excuse for the likely poor tournament performance that we're about to witness.

This is pretty disappointing and will have a knock on effect. Any future campaigns from the FA around racism, homophobia or any other form of discrimination will be dismissed as performative as when it comes to it they don't have the courage to back up their words.

It will get real once the big teams get going -but timing not ideal for enjoying oneself - can’t get drinking during todays have as I am driving tonight

So the captain would get a booking for wearing it?
Looking at the latest new rules from Qatar supporters can be banned from entry if they are wearing anything that references political or discriminatory subjects.

So shit

Every world cup ever - Sun shining, Barbecues on the go, pubs rammed, flags everywhere, even those not interested in football coming together to celebrate a festival of football

This world cup - Freezing, pissing down, no flags out, general malaise around all the shit and why it shouldnt be taking place, on top of the fact it should still be club football time.

This can never happen again surely?

Such a weird vibe around this WC. Not seeing any flags out in the street, hardly anyone really talking about it outside football circles other than complaining about human rights abuses (though I suspect a lot of these are the ones normally complaining there’s too much football during the WC).

Gonna watch all three games today as I’ve adopted Netherlands as my second team this year.

I'd like Netherlands to progress as well.
On paper they have got a decent squad this year, but have seemed pretty underwhelming in recent tournaments

Re the armband, the FA’s excuse is not to put players in that position. Why not let Kane and the players decide?

I get the risk and inevitable frustration if he were to pick up a second booking. But in my view it’s worth the risk, even if just for the first game to make a statement. And if he gets booked against Iran it’s his own fault.

It's the hypocrisy of both FIFA and the Olympic committee that sport can bring about social change etc
Ask the citizens of Russia and China what those tournaments brought them.
Sports washing is a fashionable term now with Saudi money but it's nothing new.

The countries planning to wear the armband were pretty major countries in the competition. They should have just refused to play, what are FIFA going to do then have a chunk of top teams missing?

Yep that would have made a bigger statement rather than just bailing at the first hurdle.
Seems like just an empty gesture they're not willing to put any weight or support behind

Issue is also FIFA isn't a European body it's global. Many of its members in Asia and Africa have little sympathy for rainbow causes.

Definitely not feeling the anxiety you say, I used to when I was younger , part of the reason today though is I'm fully expecting us to win today , so have no nerves , il be appalled if we lose
