Worst performance of last eight = failure? Wow. You must want Robins out half the time!
Ah mate come on .. be honest with yourself and look at the state of the worlds best teams over the last few years and tell me we've achieved great things ? International heavyweights have never been so lightweight have they ?

Enough already.

Robins has actually won things btw

Yeah, its the big moments we just don't produce. France were poor last night, but they produced in the big moments. That's the different between a good side and a great side.

Quite an interesting article in guardian on that very point. France overcame England because champion teams win the big moments | Jonathan Liew

Our media are also lauding maguire this tournament , the bloke LOST giroud for their winner .

Why are we celebrating shite and failure it's so annoying

Comparing domestic managers is wrong anyway cos it’s a totally different game. International managers need to be able to come up with game plans to get past specific opponents rather than building incrementally. And obviously they have a fixed pool of players to select from and budget isn’t a concern.

Robins having no plan B because he is slowly improving what he has and everyone knows their job and will win more than they lose is one thing. Southgate having no plan B during a game is something else entirely.

Robins getting us out the relegation zone by altering how we play to see us through a very difficult period of games to put us mid table shows he has more than 1 plan ..

I meant during a game. Robins has obviously evolved our team but rarely does an inspired triple sub that changes the game for example. To be fair that’s mostly cos we have very few game changers on the bench.

could also be down to the fact that our top division is full of foreign managers. A quick look at the likes of France, Germany, Italy etc suggests that's not the same elsewhere. therefore if those nations are looking for a new manager the chances of them even considering a foreigner are low

if the top nations aren't going into tournaments with foreign managers then you're unlikely to get winning teams who have foreign managers

so that leaves us in a position where we either pick from Howe (who I wouldn't be against), Lampard, Potter or O'Neil or look to a non English manager

Lowe and Mancini weren’t even working in their countries when they were selected for the international job

Some awful revisionist bullshit being spouted on here.

Just remember how poor England were before Southgate took over. Totally disjointed, massive factions and cliques. And poor results.

Southgate has his faults but he deserves massive credit for changing the culture and atmosphere around the England squad.

With 18 months to the next Euros I think now could be a chance to try another manager and if that is the case then Southgate has laid excellent foundations for his successor.

France were the favourites and they won. Why the hysteria? The FFF didn’t panic and sack Deschamps after Euro 2020.

Overall, I thought we played well yesterday and were the better team. You’d bank on Kane scoring that penalty and I think with our depth, we’d win the game in extra time.

Tactically, we managed the game well and kept Mbappe quiet. Games of this stature don’t create many chances and France’s winner was a set piece. The goalkeeping could’ve been better for the opener. Both teams exchanged pretty average chances.

Southgate should absolutely stay on.

With regards to Maddison it’s a shame he wasn’t used but I think it’s more down to him either not being fully fit or available at all for the group stage. At that point so many came in and scored, created and generally excelled. Once that happened it was difficult to not play them when given the opportunity. It’s not Maddison’s fault he was injured and it’s pure bad luck it came at that point. A victim of circumstance. The ones I’m finding a bit mor strange are Gallagher and to a lesser extent, Coady.
Not as if there were any shock omissions from the squad. Player pool not quite there yet but only a couple of players short of being a strong team - a left back, centre half & centre forward cover to start with

France managed the game well and were able to turn the brief spells they had into something meaningful. Giroud has scored goals everywhere he has gone. He barely has to be involved, but can just find space in the 6 yard box. Did it twice, scored once.

Kane seems to want to be involved in the play and creation a lot more, which is admirable and he's good at it, but often leaves us little to aim for when trying to create. I want to see him doing a Giroud.

To move forward we need to look at new centre backs and a midfielder who is technically gifted in the Griezman mould. Rice and Bellingham I can see being mainstays, Kalvin Phillips just isn't technically proficient enough and I actually prefer Henderson, who largely had a decent tournament when he came in.

Is there an alternative option of retaining Southgate but freshening up the coaching staff? Clearly from a motivational perspective Southgate is good and calms the players, you can see that from the environment created. A stronger tactician in the staff could be what is needed.

Morocco have just made a world cup semi final with half as good a squad whilst beating 3 big nations on the way .

Eclipsed Southgates achievements in 1 tournament

Genius

Fucking morocco , puts southgates excellent England managerial career in perspective

Yes, England were poor, but through our development systems, Southgate has now been blessed with many excellent and exciting young players.

He has been lucky to have inherited some top players.

I definitely give him some credit and always have, but he does look short technically at times in crucial games at the business end of major tournaments

England flying back from Doha now, heading to Birmingham. They flew out on a chartered Virgin A350 in 'rainbow' livery. Flight back? A Titan narrow body charter plane thats been sitting in Dubai for the last two weeks waiting for a call.

France also has a far better team than us throughout the same period.

We should’ve won in Euro 2020 and should have won last night. Lowe was given time after going close with Germany.

He also has his favourite players , which we have to also attribute again , another England manager , to their downfall .

Example: Maddison , based on every single metric of what is required to play for your country , has been treated dreadfully by the national team manager for more than a couple of years now

Nothing motivational there
When I see Kane coming back and playing in midfield, playing passes out wide and not being in the box for the cross like Giroud was last night, that's when I want Maddison on the pitch so Kane can concentrate on being England's best striker, which he is.

Exactly this. We were crying out for a proper 10 all tournament. Or another striker if you want Kane in that role (and he does it pretty well TBF)

Thought exactly this during the game. Struggled watching Jordan Henderson (who did well in general at Qatar) appearing on the right wing all the time, with him realising he was not a right winger and constantly playing it safe. We also got about 20% out of Phil Foden during that match / the tournament.

Cupboard's bare. Strikers - Abraham? Toney?
Number 10s - Madison? Grealish? Not playing there for their clubs.

Wayne Rooney went the way kane is now but a bit later on , it also resulted in Rooney being less effective

Enjoyed a winter World Cup , think it should happen every 3rd tournament. Also every country that holds a World Cup should also have the following women’s , lgbt and disabled tournament.,

I’m on the fence when it comes to Southgate staying or going - But if he goes then I’ll wish him well! The work he has done making going on england duty for a player seem a privilege and not a chore that it seemed to be under Capello or Hodgson shouldn’t go unnoticed

He’s a remarkable bloke and I find personal attacks really out of order and unnecessary but I can see the valid argument to suggest he just doesn’t have the managerial know-how to get us over the line in a tournament

Agree about the personal attacks. I just wish he had a sprinkle of Bielsa about him - Walker in defence, Rice centre mid, then 8 attacking players !

Even look at back 4, only Walker is a starter for their club. Stone, Maguire and Shaw are not currently first choices.

We overrate our team a bit. France and ourselves are very even as a team. In a combined XI, how many players would actually start? Then account for Benzema, Pogba and Kante.

We need to make strides in our striking and defence and goalkeeping departments.
