Would be nice to have some sort of breakdown of where every penny of our taxes go. I know there's a bit of one with Council Tax but in terms of all the other taxes.

I'd be much more inclined to pay more if they said I'd be supporting Sharon and Mark the nurses.

It doesn't, but again in the re-balancing, it has to be spelled out that paying more taxes can often save people money, too. Some of the 'soft' areas for example, such as social work. Get youths occupied and valued with some proper schemes, they're less likely to break into your house or nick your car for a joyride, so therefore your insurance comes down as a result.

But somebody has to pay for those schemes!

The issue with that is most things don't come down as a result, sadly. It would just mean a nicer profit for insurance companies.

I think there’s a bit of a scam going on though where the people who would actually be worse off pretend it’s about the every day people. I’m sure I saw somewhere that most people are net takers from the state below something like £25k. Then you get that bloke on £80k whining about paying £15/mo more so we can pay nurses or offer free education.

Honestly my disposable income goes on entertainment and food delivery. Please take it for public services!

I'm never likely to get to £80k, unlike Keiran, because I dared to get a PhD in a non-sexy / non-business subject but I never do understand why people begrudge paying more, the more money that have.

Maybe, however, that's why they earn more in the first place, because they're more motivated by money than I am!

Oh you definitely get more right wing. See my thread last year about tax on bonuses. But really like student loans income tax and the like is just factored in. I pay more tax than my NHS worker GF earns each month.

I know other well paid people like me who basically subsidise a low paid public sector partner so in the grand scheme of things I’d probably work out the same

But if I’m honest if my tax rate went up by say 1% I doubt I’d notice it. Maybe I’d drop down to a lower Netflix tier or get one less pizza. So what?

I am sort of the same, wish I wasn't sometimes. As long as I am comfortable and not struggling I just coast but then crank things up if needed.

Then you have the sort of people who will apply for promotions and new jobs every 2 months to get higher and higher. Sounds like stress.

Tax collected by HMRC doesn't pay for spending in any direct way, it's utter nonsense peddled by politicians. If anything it is the other way around, spending pays for tax.

When we were in Italy over Easter it was a mixed bag but on the whole the high speed rail in particular was fantastic, frequent and as we booked in advance the prices were very good value.

Look here for how we still can’t get one high speed line built despite ploughing in tens of billions.

The regionale trains aren’t great but they’re a fraction of a cost of the UK and generally on time.
The high speed trains are superior to those in the UK and probably around half the price. I got down to Napoli (5 hour journey) for €120 return travelling in Business class - imagine that in the UK.

For us we got to go with our own cabinetto first class from Bologna to Rome in 2 hours for around €20 each. Then also got business class Rome to Naples in just over an hour, even cheaper.

National debt interest = private sector savings such as pensions, i wouldn't think about it like an external debt because it isn't

I went on one in Romania, about a fiver for 3 hours. Comfy seat with plug socket.

I never thought I'd find myself defending Rees-Mogg(!) but he was defending the government's position on specifics, namely focussing on an Australia deal, and taxation causing issues rather than Brexit. Now, he studiously avoided the issues with trading with the EU and its complexities, but his answer was nothing I wouldn't expect a politician to do - focus on the things that make it look better.
