Transfer Rumour Jamie Patterson (6 Viewers)

His stats are on par with ilias chair at this level who I'm sure most city fans would love to have here but would cost a few million

I guess it depends on who you are comparing them to, but we need to look at ourselves first really. We need midfielders that can chip in with at least 5, but more towards 10 goals a season. At present we don't have any and it is a bigger problem than people think.

Our main attacking midfielder, O'Hare, (who is now out injured), can't hit a barn door. Our one striker who has everything on his shoulders still misses a lot of chances anyway, and the rest of our midfield are, putting it politely as possible, goal shy. Allen should contribute more, and Sheaf is just an embarrassment whenever he gets in the box. He fell over twice against Burnley. Hamer if he didn't play so deep would probably score more, but seems to do well on the assist front. Wingbacks also score once a blue moon. Bidwell one goal for us, and I don't think Dabo has ever scored. I just checked and we are 20th in the league for total goals scored in The Championship. That's abysmal, but not actually that surprising for me, because I feel like I spend half my life moaning about us wasting chances.

Patterson I would imagine would make us better in that department, so I would be in favour of signing him. Palmer for me was probably a similar chunk out the budget and is proving to be largely as many of us expected - some good bits and pieces, but not enough goal contributions, and not able to do it for long enough periods. We need to upgrade desperately. Is Patterson that? Yes. Is he the messiah? Perhaps a stretch too far.

If he joins, I think we should be happy with the decision, but I would exercise some caution also. If he can find the form from last season then it will be a great signing though, so let's just hope for that. Likewise, I'm also quietly hoping Godden can come back and hit the ground running. If he, Patterson, and Gyokeres can all start scoring then we'll quickly be going in the right direction.

Looking at MR comments today i wouldn't be surprised if a new structure is being put in place for transfers with age brackets being used as a guideline on to what can be offered.

If i was Doug id be enforcing that as a policy to stop us getting stuck in deals with players we have with no potential return or potential of taking us forward on the pitch. All transfers are a gamble but i think now we as a club know what we are aiming for. Which really should help in targeting the type of players needed.

We are early into a process of Doug finding out what he has what he needs to do to give MR the best opportunity to be successful. Its going to take time with more staff coming in to help and policies put in place to help narrow down searches for new signings.

If you have a model you don't sign Waghorn, but you do put Eccles on 4 years, all are gambles but the 2nd option i would always take as a better one.

You'd never have a formulaic model as it would be utter nonsense.

You might have some general principles but ultimately it is pragmatism in the context of the opportunities to sign players that you have.

I think whatever recruitment set up we have needs a clear set of guidelines about who to pursue and what kind of deals we would offer. It would save a lot of time looking at players that DK wouldn’t sign off.

That’s about as I read things. The wing backs are one of my biggest concerns as they should be chipping in with 3-5 a season given the system. We essentially need a front man who can hit 15, AMs should be aiming for 10, then a further 15-20 spread across the midfield (including WBs in this). Allen’s having a more productive season but I see this as his ceiling - he will never get close to 10 in the Championship.

This is also not allowing for goals from the bench, defenders, etc. Need to be getting on for 65 in a full season as a squad to be challenging at the right end of the table.

I think the nature of the goals we have been conceding are so frustrating that it has pulled the spotlight away, but I've felt like it has been a theme for a few seasons that we just extremely wasteful at the other end of the pitch. Some were arguing that scoring goals wasn't an issue for us, but I couldn't disagree with that more.

Get your point on the wingbacks certainly, they are practically midfielders in some ways, but even McFadzean outscored them and most of the midfield last season anyway. Godden gets overlooked, but he got 12 last season and without that things would have looked a lot different. We more or less play with six in midfield at the moment, but I have little faith any of them are ever going to score.

Hamer's goalscoring record, especially this season is good for a deep lying midfielder.

He is the biggest goal threat we have from midfield definitely. I have always been curious how he would play if he was further up the pitch as his vision is more or less the best in the team.

5 goals in his first season, 3 last season, 4 so far this season. He could still score more in my opinion, but even with the pretty low tally last season, he still outscored most of the team. Kind of solidifies the point really.

Wing backs have not helped the scoring situation.

From memory they only scored 2 last season (Kane & Maatsen v Fulham. Rest were further forward) & 1 this season (Bidwell New Years Day).

Hopefully, the 2 new lads step up. The only regular(ish) scoring WB was McCallum in L1.

Godden doesn't historically hit the ground running and his last spell before his latest injury he looked pretty poor, lets hope that changes. The amount of games we are 'the best' team in terms of performance but time and time again we don't take our chances and end up gifting a goal, now in those games if we had taken those chances it would certainly deflate the opposition and improve our chances of wins (no shit sherlock).
Allen is almost consistently poor although he runs about and uses his energy we need better quality in that position, I do give him pelters at times because he frustrates the hell out of me and its not his fault he is so lightweight and I am not so sure about him even being a squad player if we can replace him and get another 'prospect' for that position, we need much much better quality from the bench to actually really challenge for the prem BUT we have most of the makings of being a decent team just a few short and another good attacking option

I get where you're coming from but on the other hand his long passing and ability to drive forward with the ball are pretty important to how we play

I don't think he would be as effective further forward. He could probably play in that position but he is better using his vision from further back.

Hope he hasn't been given a long contract without a clause of extension after 18months for another 12months(if this deal true)as much prefer taking a risk on a younger player with potential.
