There are no cities in Warwickshire since both Coventry and Birmingham were incorporated into the West Midlands county in 1974 and are now metropolitan authorities in themselves. The largest towns in Warwickshire as of 2004 are: Nuneaton (pop. 77,500), Rugby (62,700), Leamington Spa (45,300), and Bedworth (32,500). Stratford, Warwick, and Kenilworth all house 20,000-25,000 inhabitants, while the smaller towns of Atherstone, Alcester, Coleshill, Southam, Bulkington, Polesworth, Kingsbury, Henley-in-Arden, Studley, Shipston. Wellesbourne and Whitnash have populations between 5,000 and 12,000.

I agree its not in the modern county of Warwickshire, just as its not in the West Midlands as that doesn't exist as a county anymore either.
The only thing that we can say is its in the Warwickshire area, and to me the towns of Nuneaton, Rugby & Leamington have far more in common with Coventry than Birmingham & Wolverhampton do.

This debate has been raging for year lol
Once upon a time we were part of Warwichshire County. Then some clever person said we were part of the West Midlands but had our own County Council. Then another person said we were part of Warwickshire and so forth etc.
I remember seeing an article some time back which said we are part of the West Midlands Region with our own County Council (Coventry County Council) but do not class as a county (e.g. The County of Coventry).
The West Midlands does not have a county Council (as referenced by someone earlier) but encompases several different county councils (Birmingham County Council, Wolverhampton County Council. Leamington County Council etc) within its boarders hence why we share the same bus service and why you can buy a bus ticket in Coventry and go to places like Leamington (which also figures within the West Midland boarders), Solihull, Birmingham and if i remember rightly, further afield as far as Wolverhampton (Which is also in the west midlands region) and of course all the little towns and villages around these major cities.
Another point is what our services are called:
NWM - Network West Midlands - This encompases all travel whether it be by Bus, Train or Tram (Wolverhampton for the Tram)
West Midlands Police
So you see we are part of the West Midlands and not a part of Warwickshire...we may have once upon a time but we are not now!

I can't believe this is even a debate. Look at the shape of Warwickshire on a map. There's a big, distinctive, Coventry-shaped hole in it!
I don't give a shit about councils, or police forces or whatnot. Geographically, Coventry is in the county of West Midlands.

I was sorely tempted to edit the Southam wiki with comments about all inhabitants having one eye-brow and it being the trampiest town in the County. Then I read this:
"A historical curiosity about Southam is that in mediaeval times, the town minted its own local currency. This was done because local people found ordinary coins too high in value for everyday use."
So, in essence, "nooooo, your fancy rich-people money's no good here: it's far too valuable for us."
I think that covers it better than any thing I could have made up!

If we're going to use arguments like the Police then what about the Coventry & Warwickshire Ambulance service? Or Coventry & Warwickshire NHS?

Doesn't exist as a County per se, but Coventry is not in Warwickshire-and the West Midlands umbrella continues to be used for Coventry, Birmingham and much of the Black Country for many Local Authority purposes.

Agreed but you are wrong about Leamington, that's very much in Warwickshire. The reason you can use a bus ticket is because they cross County borders.

Pre 1974 Coventry had its own Police, Fire, and Bus services, all seperate from Warwickshire.
Yet we were very much part of Warwickshire then, so how is that any different to now?

Coventry is at the heart of the old Warwickshire, and much of Bimingham's in it too-which matters more to me than the West Midlands.

All very good points but they are a legacy left over from when we "were" part of the Warwickshire.
When applying for jobs you will always put in West Midlands because on all sites they list Coventry and Warwickshire as being based in the West Midlands
This doesn't take away the fact that Warwickshire is its own County.
Interesting fact. The term "SHIRES" goes back to the time of William the Conqurer! The county was named by selecting the city (or town) that lay at the heart of that county e.g. Lincolnshire = Lincoln , Warwickshire = Warwick, Derbyshire = Derby & Leicestershire = Leicester etc). Learnt that while i was working at Warwick Castle. Was doing my research for the King Maker exhibit lol
Another interesting fact to note is that Warwick University is actually a university of Coventry, not of Warwickshire so Coventry has two University within its boarders lol! We're a greedy lot!

You actually have to pay a little more if your getting a single fair from Cov to Leam or vice versa. BUT if you get a regular £3.60 daysaver from Coventry, there is no extra charge lol
Doesn't work the same way if your going to Birmingham though, you have to pay an extra 20p on the daysaver (or 10p for a single) when going either way lol

As a fellow history geek I should also point out that while towns nearest the centre of the county were chosen as the county town, it was also based on the best defended. Warwick with its castle was the best defended town in the area.

It's in this book i was reading about how society in Britain changed from the 800's upwards. It was the castle that determined which towns were used when naming the shires etc.
