We went to war in Iraq. We’re not involved with this. Both the government and Labour have called on Israel to follow international law but have also stated that they have the right to defend themselves. I’m sure behind the scenes they’re imploring Israel to minimise any civilian casualties. I believe this pressure will continue to increase with or without marches

Btw, if these pro-Palestinian protests really are so futile, what would be the value in these anti-Hamas protests that people are apparently so keen to see?

I’d have a lot more respect if those marching for a ceasefire were also targeting hamas and the release of the hostages, albeit they’re even less likely to listen to someone in london on a Saturday afternoon than the Israeli government. That’s what a real peace march would look like though. Anyone who does, full respect as there won’t ever be a proper ceasefire/resolution without positive actions in these areas as well

What I don't get, is why anybody would be wound up about a march for peace. I can understand concerns that the general atmosphere being cultivated risks a massive PR disaster from people who haven't been going on them until now, and personally I consider it naive in the extreme to not give this weekend a miss. However, the general principle that we don't want bloodshed...?

Picking on the outskirts of movements is like suggesting all socialists are closet Trotskyists, or all Tories are big fans of Pinochet, and all it does is distract (wilfully?) from a message that actually, a bit of peace, talking, and constructive efforts is better than firing rockets at one another!

That’s never going to happen though SBT. Either way Israel will do what it will do (rightly or wrongly). I can understand the march to bring attention to the plight of Palestinians currently and a show of solidarity, weekly marches won’t make any difference though and unfortunately might well lead to unrest as well as probably making the UKs Jewish population feel pretty uncomfortable
