I've literally just started watching and we've scored twice (although one disallowed and I cannot work out why). Feel sorry for anyone that's had to watch the whole game. You poor bastards.

Just shows what can happen when we actually start trying.

You have to ask yourselves though, just how many times have England underperformed lately? It's been more often than not

And, with the players we have got, I think other managers could do a much better job.

My patience is growing thin with him, because we consistently underperform. The Italy game was good, but in so many others we have flattered to deceive at times and tonight, to not have a shot on target until something like the 60th minute in a game against the likes of Malta, is just unbelievable.

I can't see them sacking him, so we are stuck with our Gareth. I just can't see us doing anything in Germany at all, with the way we are playing.

We have to say thank god for Jude Bellingham right now. Let's hope he stays fit long term

If you’re seriously arsed about the ‘performance’ in a game vs Malta where our players were playing at 5% intensity and mainly interested in not getting injured then you need to get a grip.

So, Phil Foden was playing at 5% intensity? Gallagher? (no matter how bad he was, he was flying in and throwing himself about, just as he usually does)

And when has any team ever played at only 5% intensity?

Malta are ranked 171st in the world. If you think it's okay to not have a single shot on target in the entire first 60 mins against a side ranked 171st in the world, then I think it's you that needs to get a grip. 😂

Just looking at some of the papers player ratings from last night, and they are all saying how great TAA was in midfield and they have given him the same rating as Foden. One good ball aside, I must have watched a different game.

I thought he started well for the first 10 mins or so and then looked completely lost.

Foden totally outshone him and everyone else.

How Gallagher gets picked amazes me. Hope we don't get into Mason Mount territory with him.

Well short of the quality needed in my opinion.

I thought Guehl did okay, but I don't like Maguire or Trippier much at all for England lately. Both are so sloppy at giving the ball away.

Trent Alexander-Arnold was quite mediocre

We were barely trying. If the game had mattered a single iota we’d have beaten them 5 or 6-0. It’s really not worth getting wound up about and will have zero bearing on our performance next summer.

We’ve absolutely cruised qualification even though we had one of the trickier groups with both Italy and Ukraine in there and still people moan about it, the entitlement is unreal.

We have underperformed constantly.

I am not buying this barely trying notion at all.

They were clearly trying. We were just disjointed, there were players playing who were out of form and shouldn't have been selected and we played both Gallagher and Henderson together in midfield, which nullified much of any attacking threat.

We tried.

When have we underperformed? When we beat Italy home and away? When we stuck 7 past a North Macedonia side who got a draw with Italy the game after? When we comfortably beat Ukraine at home without breaking into a sweat? When we went to Malta and won 4-0? We’ve got 19 points from 21 points available and we had probably the toughest group of all the top seeds.

Just got my England v Brazil tickets for next March. Looking forward to seeing Brazil not the shite that Southgate serves up.

only Portugal have a better record in group qualifying - I don’t see how that is constantly underperforming

When he decided to fuck about in the final against Italy. It all counts for nothing until it actually matters

Exactly this…. It’s just awful to watch.
Yup.

We pretty much always qualify easily don't we.

Then when we get to play major teams in competitions, we usually fail.

With the players we have, we should be getting more quality performance from them

I know last night we were always going to win (we certainly wouldn't if we had played at 5% intensity mind you), but the performance was utterly dreadful.

In the period where we could reasonably be described as favourites (2021 onwards, come at me brah) then we haven’t lost a game without a missed penalty, or several missed penalties, going against us. The margins are fine in tournament football - blame Southgate for us not managing to blow out Italy in 2021, or France in 2022 to the point where those margins don’t matter, but not many teams did.

We played well against France but the in the final he had us sitting back against an Italy team that was fighting each other and were ready to collapse. He decided we should sit back once 1 up and thus he does need to shoulder a large part of the blame.

While also the credit for getting us to that position in the first place, of course.

to be fair a quite easy draw including an awful Germany and a a baffling refereeing decision helped.

We've played what is it 2 nations who were at the top of their game and lost both. We have 1 maybe 2 more goes with Kane so we need to make it count.

But that's going on past reputation. The draw is, by definition, the draw and those teams proved themselves better at the time than more established nations.

But I'm off from this thread now before Evo starts banging that drum!

Italy were in the middle of the longest unbeaten run in international football history. As I said, blame Southgate for not putting them to the sword in the final, but not many teams were managing that in 2021. Spain, Belgium, and every other team they played at the tournament certainly couldn’t.
