Surely nowadays that is more difficuly as wages for the 3 players would be much more than Sheafs wage?

It’s a simplified version - but generally you can strengthen more positions until you have a team full of top players - sell one bring in 2. The model is essentially keep buying players to develop, by the time you’ve done the above 3/4 times you’ll have 11 peak players and the conveyor belt continues whilst the team gets better.

take last year we had Hamer and Gyokeres only. We now have Wright, Simms, EMC, Kitching, Thomas, MVE, Sakamoto. The squad is stronger now than our 22/23 side.

Not necessarily just one though, we could be using money from the cup run and any residual money from the Hamer deal to fund this one. Especially if the fee is heavily weighted towards add ons and a big 'if we get promoted' bonus. Plus, as other people have mentioned, I don't think Doug will be averse to splashing out on acquiring players like this, who at 22, essentially becomes a financial asset once Robins and Adi work their magic on them.

We need to have a real go at the top 2 next season and for that we need to dominate the middle of the park and with Sheaf and Brown centrally with this lad behind we would improve an area we struggled with (conceding goals) and dominate the middle of the park like not many have in the championship in recent seasons.

Sell sheaf to Luton and we are handing the advantage to Luton etc. Yes we have a model but at some point the revolving door needs to stop and with the Vik windfall due soon and making it to the semi finals and all the extra prize money, tv and gate revenue that went with that. This maybe a summer not to not have 2 more prize assets leave. Vik and gus and now COH and sheaf. If we don't go up it will be MVE next summer and yes, while we will be making money it will not get us to where we are aspiring to be.

Sorry if this feels like a rant, it's not at you I am just frustrated that so many fans think a good signing means we have to lose our best midfielder who next year will also have a decent sell on value.

All logic says we’ll sell Sheaf. 26 yo, profile high after performance in the cup, two-years left on his deal.

Or sell Eccles and keep Sheaf another year.

Reality is, owner isn't some super rich dude using the club as a playtoy, so we have to do good business. When you have great management and recruitment (I think we can say it's the best it's ever been... in decades at least?) then selling players at the peak of their valuation makes perfect sense.

I think this is probably the case. Sensible as it means we’re less likely to be held to ransom by clubs knowing we’ve got cash to burn after a big player sale and also removes the risk of getting caught short and not finding a replacement.

I might well be wrong but I get the feeling if there’s prem interest sheafs said he wants to give it a shot, so we are planning for that scenario.

You seem to ignore that every 10 million we make on a player sale itself multiplies into another 2+ players who will reach or exceed that valuation in 2 years. So there isn't really a rush (aside from Doug's supposed 5 year timeline) and we will reach a tipping point where our squad is extremely high quality and deep if we keep heading in this direction.

We're not at a point where we can refuse to sell a player at the peak of their valuation - we will get there in a few seasons if we continue to recruit well and develop talent the way we have.

Selling players at the peak of their value (with us) should be exactly what we are doing. The key is replacing them with players as good/better at a lower cost. It's risky, obviously, but the best way to progress and get better overall.

The emphasis on signings so far seems to be midfield and wingers. Still a few weaknesses elsewhere to strengthen but I'm sure they will get covered in time. It's early days in the transfer window and we seem to be straight on it this summer unlike last summer

Agreed. He's far better than we give him credit for. He's a proven player at this level, regularly playing for a successful club. It's £5m at a minimum imho.

But if Man Utd are showing (even just tepid) interest in Sheaf. Then it’s game over.

Sheaf’s value will decline next season as he’s a year older and will only have 1 year left on his deal. If we can get £20m for him, no brainer for the club.

As a fan, I’d try and do what you suggest, but can’t see it.
