I keep asking what evidence there is that Labour will be competent. Look at Wales.

Of course, no one has provided any evidence - because there is none.

Add in the SNP in Scotland too. Present themselves as centre-left and their record is abysmal. They’ve introduced higher tax bands, rent controls and against North Sea exploration - all policies ending badly. Education and healthcare outcomes have got worse.

I hope Labour (or someone) wipe out the SNP in Scotland. Good riddance to them.

I agree with 2nd part of that. I sense our Country is becoming more right wing, selfish, bitter and intolerant and social media fuelling it.
A bit of sensible boring politician with a vision is what we need as Tory infighting has been harming the country for 15 years and will take years to settle down until hard right are kicked out. Farage is ultimately desperate to be the Conservative & Unionist Party leader.
Hopefully KS is man to deliver hope to those in poverty/out of work/kids/families and elderly.
May, Boris, Truss, Rishi and Farage have been an utter disaster.
If not, one day Id love to test a coalition of Greens and Lib Dims with good leader in place.
Personally, I believe that Starmer is 100% for being in the Customs Union and EU Single Market and believes that it would be the best for the country. He's abandoned that in order to further his own career and become PM and won't be the one to deliver actual change for the better.

He’s made the decision not to stand on any live rails to get elected. No big spending. No overturning Brexit. These aren’t slam dunks these are the kinds of things that lose you an election. The idea deciding to get in and do what you can rather than stand on the side moaning for another five years is some kind of moral failing is ludicrous.

From my albeit limited dealings with them they're liberal but much more inclined to the right that our generation.

I don’t meet as many as I used to and I have moved to Bedworth which may be contributing but I’m shocked at how conservative in terms of race gender and the like the ones I know through my 14 yo are.

The point is that it doesn't actually deliver any meaningful change and is a Labour government dancing to the tune of a Tory dominated media.

Also this really doesn’t apply in the UK where the housing crisis and lack of culture war has made everyone under pension age more left wing than ever on average.

I was on about those who'd be mid 20s now but I can definitely imagine that's the case for those around that age bracket.

Because he’s not got all your pet policies he’s the same as Sunak? It’s just nonsense I’m sorry. A child’s take.
A bit ironic calling it a child's take and then making up me saying he's the same as Sunak - hahaha.

And for the record, I don't think the UK should be admitted back into the EU.

So Starmer just says what everyone wants to hear to get himself elected, we can't believe a word he says, and he goes back on every pledge he makes...

...But when he says something isn't going to change much or doesn't make some wildly optimistic pledge actually that's when we have to believe every single word he says and take that as gospel.

How can a sovereign currency issuer face a debt crisis :rolleyes::rolleyes:

A quick google search can answer this for you. You do know the UK was bailed out by the IMF in 1976 because we were on the verge of defaulting on our debts?

Let’s say we print more money, ok… that’ll lead to inflation, the BoE will then have to raise interest rates. From the ‘mini budget’, we found that a lot of mortgage payers can’t afford interest to go much higher than 7%. The BoE had to secure pensions by buying up government bonds to avoid that collapsing. To use the 70s as an example, inflation reached 25% and interest rates up to 17%. This would be Armageddon for the economy if we had a situation

Or, we increase taxes exponentially and watch all the highest taxpayers leave the country. Millionaires are already abandoning this country and that’s set to only get worse under a Labour government.

When Greenpeace activists come to see Starmer in 2024….

Isn’t he referring to extinction rebellion there when they superglue themselves to the road?

He defended the Greenpiece activists under freedom of speech laws regarding leaflets they were handing out regarding the practices of McDonalds. Not sure it’s the same thing.

Either way the point stands. You’d be hard pressed to find anyone on the right who’d take on a 10 year pro bono case to defend freedom of speech.

Pray Your Part
Genesis 2.15

'The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it.’
The Garden of Eden we encounter in the Book of Genesis is a symbol for the whole natural world. Humankind is entrusted here with the care and tending of the earth. The Hebrew word ‘till’ is the normal Hebrew word to serve. The word translated ‘keep’ means to guard or to watch over. The first person in creation is given a solemn charge to serve and watch over the earth.

This is a sobering call as we approach an election. We are in the midst of a climate crisis caused by our own species. The effects of global warming are all around us, affecting most of all those who have least. The world faces an ecological disaster.

In these days of preparation, let us pray fervently for our own government and the leaders of the world, that they may set the wellbeing of the earth and of nature at the heart of public policy.
Give us the wisdom and the will
to use the resources of the earth to your glory
and for the good of all creation.
Hear us, good Lord.

For the sake of the country, I hope Starmer is as competent as Blair… that’s just a very optimistic take.

New Labour also inherited a low tax burden which this prospective Labour government will not have the luxury to raise taxes to improve public services as Blair and Brown did.

I wasn't a fan but no one predicted him cutting May's lead to the extent it was.

He still lost in 2017 and by standing in 2019 ensured we had another five years of the Tories. Him "nearly winning" didn't help anyone.

May runs the worst campaign in decades and it’s Corbyn cutting her lead, Sunak does the same and it’s the Tories throwing it away and nothing to do with Starmer.

It’s such a ridiculous meme. Starmers approval now is higher than Corbyns ever was, higher than May and around on par with Johnson in 2019. By any measure he’s a relatively popular politician and on course to win a landslide.

The fact this is true while everyone on social media claims the opposite should give you pause for thought.

The last few seconds of that clip perfectly encapsulates grifters like Farage and Co.

They just spout stuff that sounds great to boomers, but with absolutely no substance or truth behind it because there simply doesn't need to be, it's obviously never going to be implemented.

A bit like the Tory manifesto I guess - national service etc.

Also like the Labour manifesto and the £38 billion black hole.

All parties other than the main two can say what they want - are the Greens grifters?

I mean it’s a tongue in cheek comment, but really it’s more that Starmer has changed his opinion on lots of things in the last 4 years. I think there is a piece of video out there saying he supported the actions of activists like Just Stop Oil or Extinction Rebellion before he was leader of the Labour Party.
It’s almost as if the sniff of power has created somewhat of an inverted Damascus moment

I don’t think Starmer is particularly popular, there isn’t that much enthusiasm for him. The alternative is Rishi, who is a multi-millionaire married to a billionaire heiress running to be PM in an election that is dominated by the Cost of Living. Not only that, it’s been 14 years of government, with no real achievements to speak of and failed on most policy objectives they’ve set. People are fed up with the Tories and of course Starmer is the chief beneficiary.

When he’s in government and nothing substantial changes, my instinct is that his popularity will plummet.

I was reminded recently that Starmer represented 2 green piece activists pro bono in what was apparently known as the longest libel case in British history (some 10 years) against McDonalds. Quite a famous case known as McLibel.

Sorry but if you think someone who would do that is anything like pretty much any politician on the right I think you’re deluded. Most politicians on the right would have been cheering on the corporation against the woke lefties, while giving them tax breaks funded by the plebs.

lol he toadied up to the US and was furious that May overturned the deportation of Gary McKinnon

Rishi, is that you?

No I’m the IFS - they said both main parties are being dishonest in their manifesto
