They have already got further with this little incursion than Russia's Kharkiv offensive which was labelled as an incredible success and a sign that the end is near for Ukraine.
They have advanced further but to what end?
The Russian Kharkov offensive is unlikely to be an attempt at taking the city given the forces committed, but more a fixing operation to force ukraine to spread its already thin manpower even thinner.
The Ukrainians may have the same intentions here, to make Russian forces tear away from following up their advances in donbass. Depending on the size of the Ukr forces, this could work, however they themselves would need to remove forces from the Donbass as theg simply dont have sufficient reserves to throw into this. Transferring them form donbass in large numbers would probably trigger a collapse of their lines in donbass.
Realistically speaking, Russia is unlikely to need to switch forces from other combat areas as they have been building up reserves.
