So people just surrender as they are bored by Russian propaganda? If they see through that I am sure they would carry on debating the issue as with every other political thread would they not?

In my case at least it’s become a tiresome debate. I still believe that allowing Ukraine to be swallowed up by Russia will have serious consequences for Europe, you don’t think it will matter that much and that’s the root of the disagreement.

Official sources have apparently verified. He has accused Ukraine of "invading Russia and attacking its citizens". Would be funny if it wasn't so deadly.

It was an air and ground offensive apparently. It is continuing today.

Apparently they are 15km into Russia and are apparently trying to block a route where Russia are planning to move large numbers of troops to the north for another incursion. It also seems to be taking some Russian soldiers away from the Donetsk area.

When Hitler went all in on the invasion of Poland, Germany itself wasn’t particularly well defended and Britain/France could actually have caused some damage had they gone for it.

Putin likewise has thrown everything he has at Ukraine on the assumption that his own territory won’t be attacked.

Seems a small one. But if you concentrated enough force and broke through the Russians near the border, you wouldn’t have much between you and the capital. Particularly if it were air supported.

I wonder if Ukraine seized and held some Russian territory if the Grendels of this world would argue that Putin should formally hand it over in the name of peace

Wagner got nowhere near Moscow.

The Sumy/Kursk border region is lightly defended on the russian side by conscripts - one of the reasons too there's been a decent number of POWs taken by the Ukrainians.

This will swing around when Russia brings reinforcements into play. Ukrainian defences are falling like domino's in donbass, fortifications they have spent years building up. There's no way they hold on to this.

It's another Zelensky/Budanov PR trick which will backfire and result in massive casualties for nothing. If the resources being put into this are true, then it's a criminal waste given the situation in the east.

Divert forces, damage supply lines, lower civilian morale, I'd guess.

Surely Putin should sue for peace immediately on whatever terms the Ukrainians offer, rather than risk the loss of more lives?

The Russian Kharkov offensive is unlikely to be an attempt at taking the city given the forces committed, but more a fixing operation to force ukraine to spread its already thin manpower even thinner.

The Ukrainians may have the same intentions here, to make Russian forces tear away from following up their advances in donbass. Depending on the size of the Ukr forces, this could work, however they themselves would need to remove forces from the Donbass as theg simply dont have sufficient reserves to throw into this. Transferring them form donbass in large numbers would probably trigger a collapse of their lines in donbass.

Realistically speaking, Russia is unlikely to need to switch forces from other combat areas as they have been building up reserves.

It was about 60 IIRC. Almost took Russia in a Saturday morning. 4 years later Putin still embarrassing himself on a daily basis failing to take a country nobody expected to last 4 days. The Ukrainians are tough and determined but really the two things are a measure of how awful Putin is at war. Pure Napoleon complex.

We'll never really know, but whatever it was they didn't achieve anything. If it was an attempt to capture Kharkiv then it's clear that failed. Was it to fix some Ukrainian forces? Maybe. But internal lines of communication makes that a lot easier for Ukraine than Russia.

They suffered incredible losses and critically it reversed the White house decision about using western weapons to strike Russian territory. That was a huge advantage that Russia had and they threw it away.

You don't lose 20,000 men or whatever it was in a fixing operation.

It was a total failure.

Presumably they’re going circumnavigate the minefields Russia has installed across the front line in Ukraine by invading Russia, turning right, re-enter occupied Ukraine and attack the Russian lines from behind in a classic pincer movement. They’ve had little joy attacking across the minefields for obvious reasons. Alternatively it strengthens their hand in any negotiations. We’ll leave your territory if you leave ours. Who knows. Either way Putin is rattled. The 4 day special operation is not going to plan.
