Private school fees are a very good barometer of whether someone is worth listening to. If they think the sky is falling cos some poshos have to pay tax they are not serious commentators.

He Is not really coming at it from the point of a few poshos having to pay tax - I would imagine most already pay shed loads. His accent is why I described him as Marmite. He says he didnt attend a private school, unlike some other barristers - Starmer for example.
He is approaching it from the position of incredulity that the government is seeking to take some sort of urgent action as a result of a policy they announced some time ago. If only they had done a proper impact assessment!
I think you are shooting the messenger here shmmeee. I would have hoped that a seasoned political observer like yourself would have given him longer than 5 seconds and actually listened to what he is saying rather than making a huge assumption.
At the end of the day, taxation on private school fees per se makes fuck all difference to me and mine UNTIL the local state schools are over full with posho‘s kids who have nowhere else to go. He describes parents trying to make arrangements with LAs and being fobbed off. A desperate situation in my view.
PS Presumably as soon as Starmer, Reeves, Rayner etc start talking about private school fees I should take the view that they aren’t worth listening to. I Can easily subscribe to that view.

I think the point is that they haven’t necessarily left it, as you put it. It’s just as easy to argue that the government should have ensured everything was in place , or delayed implementation until next academic year. They have instead acted like the arseholes they are. Many parents presumably simply don’t know whether their kids schools will remain open, even if they can personally afford the additional costs.
Of course, it doesn’t matter to Starmer and his acolytes because working people don’t send children to privately funded schools. Unless their dad is a toolmaker.

I have not suggested we shut all private schools overnight. Just argued for substantially more to go towards state education.
We complain about high immigration but won’t put the money or hard work in to create a home grown skilled workforce or to improve pay and conditions in social care, nursing, teaching etc.

You may not have argued it, and it may not have been the Governments intention, but they clearly either didn’t do an adequate impact assessment, or any assessment, to ensure that the law of unintended consequences was taken in to account. Perhaps shows an extreme lack of intellectual flexibility and competence.

Brown people already pay their fair share of tax and where they don’t they should.
If the tax revenue needs raising, and seemingly it does, then the burden should fall on those with the broadest shoulders. This is a basic Labour principle. The fact the people complaining have generally been the wealthiest for me is a sign they’re doing exactly what they were elected to do. The alternative was raising tax on working people not asset holders and those buying luxury goods. No kid is harmed by going to a good state school instead of a private school. Most countries in the world do just fine without our weird privilege protection system. And again being asked to pay a bit of tax isn’t a ban, it’s just a bit of tax.

I’m not talking about the payment of taxes, I’m talking about the lack of contingency planning around an entirely feasible consequence of a long planned change in policy. If This was aimed at Muslim schools you would be fucking furious, presumably there will be brown kids who will end up suffering In any event,
Russia has quite an effective privilege protection system, called open windows in high buildings.
So working people don’t send kids to private schools? Some do and their kids will suffer as much as the Uber rich. Indeed, ordinary kids in state schools currently will also suffer when class sizes increase significantly. Could all be ruinous to an entire generation. Be interesting to see how many 16 year olds actually do end up voting aLabour when the electorate is next rigged, hopefully will backfire enormously. But the ideaolgical class war is more important to you than anything else
Wealthier people already pay more tax. In this education field they are paying for their kids education twice, once for that not taken at state schools through general taxation and a second time through payment of fees to an establishment of their choice.
Utter, utter incompetence at senior governmental level.

Pointing to a tiny percentage of kids put through private school by edge case parents to justify what’s essentially just a pay to win privilege system doesn’t make it valid. If we were some third world country with corrupt officials you could pay for better treatment some working people could pay too, but it would massively favour the wealthy more. If its a choice between cutting provision at well resourced school that already over provision and doing it at a school in inner city birmingham or whereever then its a no brainer.
You keep talking about class warfare but youre the one who wants to take from the working class to preserve upper class privilege again and again.

Where do I mention taking from working class. I worked all my life, therefore I was working class. I was pretty well paid and have paid hundreds of thousands in tax and NI. Previously privately educated kids turning up at a state school will be taking from the working class. I simply don’t believe that you are so thick as not to realise that.
Labour are taking from the pockets of working people, all the increases in travel taxes for example. It’s hypocrisy that you are happy to go along with as long as Elton John gets his just desserts. I will keep my ears open for the sound of the timbrils and Madamme G’s swoosh followed by the cries of the crowds of old women knitting as they get spattered in freshly gushing arterial blood.
