Investment rumour. (8 Viewers)

Whilst large investment might lead to some success on the pitch and whilst it might bring about a new stadium (or ownership of the current one) would we lose out in terms of 'soul' of the club OR did we lose that the day SISU moved in?
We need something to re-energise the club and make the supporters excited and anticipate a new season. Perhaps Mowbray can help this process but a new investor would certainly add to the interest. Mowbray and a new investor might just make a winning combination

There are hight restrictions for buildings around the airport, the factory i work at for example is not allowed to build upwards. Wouldn't that hinder the chances of a stadium being built?

Stadiums (unless you're building the San Siro or Nou Camp etc) aren't any bigger than your average airport terminals now. If anything, modern terminals are probably taller than the likes of St Marys, iPro, Ricoh etc.

I wouldn't think that such a development in Baginton is going to be plain sailing in terms of planning which means time and money costs

- the local residents are not going to be happy (Baginton and down through in to Finham)
- The infra structure round Tollbar end might be being improved but the roads around the airport leave many problems
- there will be considerable parking issues
- CCC carries a considerable interest in the area and will need to be involved in planning that's apparently an issue for SISU
- public transport is at the moment insufficient and will require CCC involvement
- out of town retail sites are not flavour of the month (will need retail to support build costs), is there even a need in the area for another retail site? That could be a problem if the stadium is to be piggy backed on other developments
- will additional retail be viewed positively against plans already in place?
- it is still greenbelt despite it being involved in the Gateway project. That Gateway project seems to have been centred on warehousing which would see less in the way of traffic peaks etc
- Floodlights so close to the runway might be an issue- especially when there is little other light pollution in the area
- is there a planning issue with the Ryton Training base so close? It has already been turned down for other uses hasn't it?

Not too long to wait to find out where as the initial planning has to be in by September. After that if it is that site I can foresee many challenges and even if successful the first brick not being laid for years

Wouldn't a developer need to at least brief the surrounding authorities if there is an infrastructure implication?

This is the original gateway plan
http://www.roxhill.co.uk/portfolio/coventry/masterplan/

Some initial thoughts into your queries OSB....

- the local residents are not going to be happy (Baginton and down through in to Finham). Local residents are normally never happy with ventures like this. Any local objection is still unlikely to stop any planned construction. Something as ridiculous as rare butterflies could stop construction (as happened with Arundel here on the South Coast many years ago) but resident objections rarely permanently halt proceedings.
- The infra structure round Tollbar end might be being improved but the roads around the airport leave many problems. What problems? I'm not from the area so genuine question? Would a stadium at the airport be harder to get to than HR?
- there will be considerable parking issues. Wouldn't there be plenty of land around the site for parking? Although not local, I'm in the Coventry area regularly for work (within 8 miles of the city centre!) and from driving through the area, there looks to be ample land available.
- CCC carries a considerable interest in the area and will need to be involved in planning that's apparently an issue for SISU. At the risk of sounding like CCC 'owe' us, haven't they said they're keen to retain us in the Coventry area? Sisu would need to take a big dose of 'man the f*&k up' and crack on if their 'pipe dream' is to become a reality
- public transport is at the moment insufficient and will require CCC involvement. I suspect if this ever did go ahead - and I don't for one minute believe it will, then I'm confident that this point would be addressed and therefore fairly mute
- out of town retail sites are not flavour of the month (will need retail to support build costs), is there even a need in the area for another retail site? That could be a problem if the stadium is to be piggy backed on other developments. They're not flavour of the month...doesn't stop them popping up every where though!
- will additional retail be viewed positively against plans already in place? Not sure what plans you refer to (again, not being local) but as above, additional retail when it's in direct competition with existing retail, will never be viewed popularly.
- Floodlights so close to the runway might be an issue- especially when there is little other light pollution in the area. I was trying to think if this was an issue or not. There's stadiums close to existing airports - Ageas Bowl Southampton (Southampton Airport), Crawley Town (Gatwick), Brentford (Heathrow) etc. Not sure on light pollution levels but I would hazard a guess and say that there's likely more light pollution around those examples. I would also have thought that more, not less, light pollution would be an issue

Wasps definitely want us there, we pay rent and provide other incomes for them.
The art is getting access to those incomes whilst we are there.

So what you're saying is, wasps will want to squeeze us for every penny they can get out of us?

No.
Wasps will need to make it more advantageous to stay than to move out into a new stadium.
Yes.
Thinking about it you may be right as a stadium is not possible.

Obviously they could dig down but it will be an issue to over come as the holiday inn site is just off the line they go into land. Toll bar isn't having a fly over for this reason.

Given they have experience of knowing how hard it is to get planning permission, etc, they will know that the odds are firmly stacked against a new stadium, which unfortunately puts our club at a massive disadvantage in any negotiations :(

Quite sad really that Sisu battle on regardless despite the majority knowing that it's fruitless.

On a slight side note, somebody handed in a lost £2 lottery ticket to me at work today (I come across as a trusting sole - think that's what they say :pointlaugh:) and I'm going to check the numbers when the lottery is drawn on Saturday. Dilemma - if it is a winner (a big winner) - do I do the right thing and buy the stadium, or should I try and find the rightful owner of the ticket? I'm going with the majority vote/response (note abdication of responsibility)!

Worry about it Saturday.
Obviously don't let it ruin the Eurovision Song Concert though.

You buy the stadium and then go up to the rightful owner and say 'Congratulations! You are now the proud owner of a footballing arena!'

The Butts would be awful because no fucker can get there, might have escaped your notice but 97.5855943% of support comes from inside the ringroad and most can't be arsed to cross because it's dangerous so who will bother with a rural hike, no-one unless we are the new Barcelona. Club would be dead within a couple of years. In fact just in time for Coventry United to climb a couple of more leagues and pitch in for the vacant slot at the Ricoh !

Have you noticed the 6 lane A444 outside the Ricoh?

Going back to the original post The Sun ran an "article" back in January saying CCFC were one of a number of clubs being lined up for potential takeover. Seems more like a space filler and guess work to me!

Baginton is just a joke. Siskin drive is probably too far to walk from Baginton village itself never mind Coventry. As busy as the A444 is it is an arterial road within a city as opposed to a city bypass which the a46 is. Siskin drive is virtually inaccessible other than by motor transport. I use toll barr end every day and to walk from Willenhall to siskin drive would mean crossing kamikazi island and although the new roadworks will reduce the volume of traffic its not easy and can't be compared to the A444 at the Ricoh. Also traffic from siskin drive would be clogged with even a 5000 crowd

You'd have to assume Issues like these would be addressed over possibly a ten year window for any site

If both local councils were supporting it then there may be changes but toll barr end even after the tunnel is complete is simply not pedestrian friendly. To build a stadium so far away from from the population preventing a walk to the ground is commercial suicide. The Ricoh allows many people in Northern Coventry to walk to the ground.

I thought they were going to include a pedestrian walkway at Tollbar.

There are indeed though a lot more people able to walk to the Ricoh than there could ever be at Baginton.

I regularly walk to the Ricoh and I am just off the Radford Road. Takes me 25 mins. The Ricoh is very walkable from Radford, Keresley, Whitmore Park, Foleshill, Holbrook's and Longford.

Baginton would mean a lot more people having to use cars or public transport.

As I understand it, the site being suggested is not the airport (or even the Gateway site), but just across the river from there in Rugby Borough’s territory.

Administrative boundaries don’t matter much to me, and that is still pretty much Coventry. But one of the biggest problems people have with the Ricoh is that it is slightly too detached from the city – and this would be far worse in my opinion. Beyond the outer bypass, not even very well joined to the nearby industrial estates and warehouses. Little prospect of anyone going on foot from within the city, and parking looking very difficult to sort out. Not a clever site if CCFC want to build regular big crowds.

Furthermore, this is just across the road from the old Peugeot site, where by Tim Fisher’s admission land values were far too expensive for us. And if SISU think everyone else is asleep while they search for bargain plots, they are deluded. You don’t even need one hand to count the realistic sites on the edge of the city.

Just to be clear, if CCFC could build a brilliant atmospheric new stadium in a good location, I’d be more than happy. This doesn’t look like it to me though.

Bollocks. The Ricoh is hardly a "walk up" venue either, is it?

Baginton is a long way (in relative football ground location terms) from any local population, with hardly any being able to walk to it especially having to negotiate the A46 even after the tunnel has been built there is only 1 access road. unfortunately the "walk up is key" if a 100% need to get their by car or public transport it won't work.

When GR steps down as MP of Cov NW, then a barrier to develop the Holbrooks site or indeed any site actually in Cov will be removed.

GR and SISU will never be friends and SISU cannot afford to get rid of CCFC. They're staying but cannot get permission in Coventry because of the GR /SISU history.

Wait 2 years, Geoff will have retired and all this talk of Rugby Council areas will be unnecessary.

Stadium needs to be in Coventry and feuds need to be put aside.

I'm sure you do Mr Smartypants, but it's not like HR when I would imagine a good percentage did. The majority of people who go to the Ricoh go by car, taxi or public transport.

I walk up :)

Yep, very fair post.

A lot of the criticism of the Ricoh has been about it's location and lack of pubs surrounding the place and it being rather cold and soulless just stuck out with not a lot surrounding it apart from the Arena Park. This location mooted would be much, much worse from that perspective. Even more remote than the Ricoh and therefore probably even more cold and soulless.

Such a shame the Butts surrounding area was developed, because that would have been ideal from the perspective of being in the heart of the community.

You'd be surprised how many do walk, Torch. A lot from Longford, Foleshill and Alderman's Green way and I see a fair few heading from Radford when I walk up myself too.

I'm sure they do, however it still isn't as many as a ground in the centre of town. And anyway wherever a new ground is someone will always moan that's too far, etc etc.

Baginton would be pretty ideal I think for many people, not everyone, but that's the way of the world.
