Wilson, like nearly all our recent keepers, has regressed.
I'm not expecting the 2nd coming of Gordon Banks, I'm expecting him to be less shit than Colliins.

Never want to put anyone out of a job but it's got to be time to have a look at upgrading the goalkeeping coaching set up this summer. Not one keeper over the last few years has improved consistently. Dovin has done well enough but he was brought in at great expense as a top prospect so we should expect he would.

Why would you expect a journeyman goalkeeper like Wilson, brought in as backup, to progress?

Throughout his time here Simms has shown both why he got a PL contract and why he was let go. He has the physical attributes to be dominant in this league but rarely uses them.

We don't know much about his mentality apart from what we perceive from watching him - a placid gentle giant. I hope behind the scenes the coaching staff are telling him he needs to find the aggression or he won't be here much longer.

At the start of the season, most thought we'd got a pretty deep squad and would be able to rotate, Where has all that depth gone, 4 injuries and we're fucked??

We had the depth but as the season has progressed we've realised that the quaility in that depth isn't good enough to be able to rotate and not notice a marked difference.

Far to placid, he should be calling for the ball & giving his team mates bollockings when they don't give it to him . Getting more stuck in, swearing & shouting & strangely getting booked more often .

Not just Wilson, who to be fair seems to know his role at the club. Collins more and others. Williams has been here since 2019. All have had real dips in form. 6 years is a long time not to refresh that coaching department.

Who have we had on our books as 1st team squad keepers

Burge*
O'Brien*
Morosi
Wilson
Moore
Collins
Dovin

* Might have moved by the time he arrived

Wilson is miles miles better than he was when he first got here. Even at his worst in the last 3 seasons he's been better than any appearances he made whilst in league one where he was truly awful.

We’ve also scored goals to compensate…

The personnel that made 5-3-2 work are not available and this is something people have overlooked when calling for 5-3-2.

Team for Bristol at home (1-0 W):

Lati - Binks - Kitch
MvE - Rudoni - Allen - Torp - Da Silva
Simms - BTA

Team for Blackburn away (2-0 W):

Lati - Binks - Kitch
MvE - Rudoni - Allen - Torp - Bidwell
Simms - BTA

--

9/10 of those players are available. We could put a better version out now as Grimes/Sheaf/Wright all come in

Particularly with our wingers. Sakamoto and EMC are good players but when they have ineffectual games, who is on the bench to change the game? I’m hoping for more from EMC next season as he’s shown some great glimpses but the season has been stop-start for him. Sakamoto, imo, would make a fantastic role player in a top 3 team but he doesn’t have the consistent output to be the main guy.

It’s lucky MVE is a robust player because he’s had to play nearly every minute of every game this season and last.

Even at CM, the people happy with Andrews being a 4/5th choice in preseason were made to look silly given how many injuries we’ve picked there.

At LB, Bidwell and JDS aren’t really Top 6 calibre imo. Defensively, I’m not convinced with Lati and Binks as backups and a top end CB would elevate Thomas and Kitching imo.

Said before if the money was there I’d want: GK, CB x 2, RB, LB, CM x 2, RW, ST most of that is replacing squad players.

But whether we’ve got the cash for a noticeable upgrade on the likes of Lati, Eccles, BTA, etc is a fair question.

Need to be smarter in the free market i think. We can't be paying what you'd consider to be good money for all those positions.

Think that's highly unlikely.
Even a Vic big move will probably mean being able to hold on to a saleable asset rather than go on a spending spree
I think they'll be some money available but I think Frank will have to wheel and deal.

Yeah it’s why I’m pretty chill on demanding for example Dasilva and Latibeaudiere never play for us again. But I do think it’s what sets the top three aside is the ability to chop and change with not much impact on the quality.

You use the free market so you can have the money available for 2 or 3 signings that truly make a difference. For example and i'm just giving one off the top of my head, you get rid of BTA for £3.5 million (rumours in Jan teams were prepared to give us our money back) you bring in say, Emil Riis, on a free. You've not really downgrading your backup striker option at all, in my opinion of course, and you are now £3.5 m up to put towards someone else.

Id be happy with loans in three or four of those positions too, but Doug won’t be.

It’s why I was keen for a while on Sam Surridge. Bit of an arrogant dickhead who thinks he’s better than he is, but you need a bit of that.
