Whilst this is true, free agents are still going to try and get as close as to their former contract as is possible.

Footballers usually live to their contracts so any significant drop is likely to hurt them financially.

It usually isn't as simple as 'they'll still earn a shed load so £10k pw less won't hurt them'.
A 10kpw reduction is a 500k reduction a year. Of course they aren’t gonna take a first offer if it’s 1/3 of what their old contract was. He will be looking atm at getting around 20k and his demands will reduce the longer he goes without a club.

It really depends on their age, which direction their career is going and what other offers they have.

There are a lot of out of contract players and we are into mid-July now. Soon it will click they will have to reduce demands in a few weeks or risk not having a club.

Ultimately in the end if their career is on a significant downturn then yes, they'll have to take a massive drop but for the most part players will try and negotiate contract terms that are at least in the same ballpark as their former wage.

Well I was told, by somebody who spoke to somebody significant ..you can work it out with me asking bout who attended the leamington game .. that there was a problem with the medical , which is why I asked you because I didn't believe him ..maybe its true
Don’t think it’s a problem just needs completing

The current post-COVID financial climate may have a huge bearing on that.

It's quite a different squad here now though. The team he left still had a load of league two players in it who were basically in awe of his ability.

Now we have a load of Championship players he won't get the same leeway if he just disrespects them by not turning up.
I get those comments from Grimmer was it? As I say I don’t think there were many players annoyed at him not turning up for things but maybe you’re right

Who said its impact sub? Strength in depth is massive in the championship

Really think were going to be lucky enough to get another injury free season out of O'Hare? Why does he not need competition? Also the likes of them can play wide if we change system?

But again someone like Patterson on his wages would not be happy sitting on the bench as he wouldn't be picked ahead of O'Hare, of course competition is good but it's not an area we need to be spending big bucks on (lwb and cb are) if we can get someone like bright on less wages

Of course it will. But as shown with the Paterson rumours, players are still trying their upmost to remain on lucrative contracts.

I suspect there's around a 25-30% reduction on average in terms of what players demand to what they actually receive. However, given that the average wage for a Championship player is close to £30k pw, for the most part we'd still be totally out priced based on such drops.

I think we may see some of these established players join clubs quite late in pre-season as they will be holding out for offers but with the market situation and Covid I think many will be disappointed and eventually sign shorter-term contracts on less money hoping the market recovers next year. They may get hefty incentives/bonuses added in as well.

What is this big obsession with Paterson all about?

That makes sense
Medicals for senior players are pretty thorough for obvious reasons, the club won't want to give a long contract unless they're sure the player is 100% sound
It may be that extra scans or similar have been required
As far as I know the deal is still on subject to the medical being finalized

Don't think there will be widespread new offers at £30k per week when the Rotherham boss is saying a £1m asking price for one of his players is putting a lot of Championship clubs off (as they can't afford it) He says ' a lot of championship clubs are in a lot of trouble' Paying 4 new players £1.5m adds £6m to a wage bill (on top of existing squad wages) It just doesn't add up.

The finances of some clubs in the Championship has never added up. It's a gambling culture based on reaching the "promised land" of bountiful rewards in the PL.
The success of Villa and Bournemouth in breaking the FFP rules and gaining promotion has encouraged others.
Covid might have made a few clubs pause and take stock of their business plans to lose £M's every year.......here's hoping.

200 odd championship appearances for Forest and Bristol city.

50 odd goals and assists

can play AM or wide

Proven player and something we need

But we don't need another first choice am as our current one is our best player and we don't play with wingers so....

For the cost of Patterson to be a bench warmer we can probably sign bright and a good quality lwb or CB which we need more urgently, surely you understand that..

I get what you mean, but Tell me what happens if OHare gets injured?

Or if he doesnt recover very well from Covid and loses his fantastic engine?

We instantly lose our creativity and power from the AM position.

And he may be decent but Jodi as a replacement isnt Callum OHare

If we havent got enough budget wiggle room to not get a LWB 2CB and an attacking mid of good quality in we may aswell give up.

We only need 4 more now, 5 at a push if we think we need another CM

You'd hope that at his age and in his physical condition that covid wouldn't affect him too much

You'd hope so, but i just have a concern about that position this year.

Weve got 2 full seasons out of O'Hare now, hasn't missed a beat. There is only so long on the law of averages that he can go without an injury that keeps him out for 6 weeks or so for example.

We cannot bank on a 3rd season on the trot where he's the duracell bunny and made of concrete

But what if he doesn't and we are stuck with someone being one of our biggest earners sat on the bench and O'Hare carries on his upward trajectory of last season

You also can't say that about Jones as we don't know how he will take to the championship especially after his injuries but he was looking decent last pre season and we have to wheel and deal due to having one of the lowest budgets in the league and I'd rather we spent money on a position we need rather than backup just in case

I know you are probably too young to remember our premiership years but one of the reasons we got in so much shit was due to over spending on average or not required players and I really don't want us to get back into that position again

You'd hope but there is no guarantee. Long covid can affect young and very fit people. I don't know but I suspect it had an impact on players like Walker last season.

I agree with you, looking at it we need to stay in control of the finances. I remember the tail end of the prem years i was born in 1990.

I just feel someone like Paterson and his pedigree, along with ability to play wide and through the middle would be a good acquisition.

Especially if we needed to switch it up to wingers for a while, we can them have both him and JJ wide, and of course, he can fill in for OHare

Also if MR is thinking of bringing the Box back, then Hamer and Kelly sitting with Ohare and Paterson playing off Waghorn/Tyler/Gyok would work well i feel.

Either way, i think we agree we need 2 CB 1LWB and an attacking midfielder

If money wasnt so tight/we didn't have O'Hare I'd agree with you completely about Paterson as he is a good player but I must admit I don't see the box coming back as we have signed two strikers and had our most success playing two up last season and I think we'll stick to that

But at least we agree we need 2xcbs (one if rose can stay fit tbf) a lwb and a cam and if bright can stay on the straight and narrow (big if I know) he would be an inspired signing and we have to remember that neither robins or boddy are stupid and will have had proper conversations with bright and there will be some proper get out clauses for us as it really is the last role of the dice for bright at our level

Yep agree.

I can see Osti coming back. No reason for it i just have a good feeling. I think we need 2 even with a fit rose, we leaked a lot of goals last season, it would be good to have an upgrade on Fadz and Hyam and have them 2 as squad players.

Osti and 1 more and il be happy at CB. Can see Drysdale having a L1 loan this season
