World class does get banded around way too much these days

10 years ago 'World Class' was reserved especially for Messi and Ronaldo and that is it

I like Newcastle and think they have a cracking side but I side but I saw someone claim Bruno is 'world class' the other day - He is great but he isn't 'world class'

In the palace villa game they were doing pre match analysis and someone said that a 25 yard pass in a game by Adam Wharton was ‘world class’ - well not really. It was alright but hardly that good

To me the quality of centre forwards is way way down on what it used to be and no one can tell me otherwise. Players that couldn't even get in the likes of Brazils squads regularly would be among the best around right now. Actually English forwards too tbf, we used to have a good roster, or if you will, deck.

World class literally just means one of the best in the world. Two people isn’t a class you can’t have just Ronaldo and Messi. This is like “club legend” people get weirdly defensive about it. If you’re playing top level football consistently you’re world class.

Or the tactics are making the strikers worse, if they are coached a certain way from a young age i guess that's a possibility. Hard to say really, maybe i'm not objective as i don't really like what football has become generally. Find a lot of it a bit of a circus tbh. Used to love it, watch any football i could, read up on football, think about football.. now its just CCFC for me really, the rest is just noise.

It's something i'd use to refer to the handful of best players at the handful of best teams. But its not something worth getting bent out of shape about tbf. I'd say our manager was a world class player for sure.

Agree. In England alone I'd say we have 4 world class keepers: Alisson, Ederson, Martinez, Collins.

The modern obsession with xG has led to teams going out of their way to avoid shooting, while the equal obsession with AAATB football means the game has slowed down and in my view is far more boring to watch.

It’s the fucking pass pass pass with zero movement or intention. Most teams can’t do it and end up like us just farting about by the halfway line all game.

I saw a thread the other day about overrated players back in the day and apparently looking back using various 'stats' the likes of Joe Cole and Jay-Jay Okocha were 'overrated'. Again i'm not going old man on this but if that's the conclusion you come to then sometimes its just good to put the stats in the bin and use your fucking eyes for once.

Oh yeah don’t get me wrong, there’s plenty I also don’t like about the game today. And nothing wrong with preferring things the way they used to be. I just don’t like to say that things were objectively better in my day, when the game is clearly coming on leaps and bounds in terms of both ability and popularity.

Puts it down partly to a bigger gulf between promoted teams and the rest and then just goes “must be better cos coaching and strikers lol” rather than actually answering the question of what the difference between shots taken is across the different leagues. There is still individual brilliance to be found everywhere - a broad rise in standards maybe means they stand out less? The idea that players being drilled better makes them robots is a purely subjective thing - personally I prefer watching when players seem to have a clue what they’re supposed to be doing.

Yeah, some new disruptive and successful way of playing will come along one day. Never stand still.

It’s just a pendulum imo. I’m sure people felt the same in the past when for instance Queen’s Park in Scotland started to favour possession over a direct approach in the very early history of the game. It’ll keep changing based on what works and then tactics will be made to break what works and it’ll swing in a different direction.

The tactics I find best are whatever way you can to do two things:

1) get the round thing between the sticky things at the other end
2) stop the round thing going between the sticky things at your end

Generally I've noticed teams who can do both of these well are quite successful.
