I’ll whisper it quietly but one area the government has done well in was the early/pre acquisitions of various (6/7) vaccines. It put us in a decent place whoever succeeded in rolling out first.

Still hoping for the AZ/Oxford vaccine though as it will be a National/International game changer in respect of cost/storage/transportation
Bang on but look at what science are saying about Brexit!!!

These are some of the main points from that briefing:

  • The recommendation to approve the vaccine was made following the "most rigorous scientific assessment of every piece of data"
  • The MHRA regulatory body started preparing for the process in June and so were "ready for that last sprint" and stressed "no corners have been cut"
  • Most of the side effects of the vaccine are very mild and last only a day or so
  • People will be immune seven days after the second dose, and will have some protection on day 12 after the first dose
  • The most vulnerable individuals have been prioritised, with care home residents at the top of the list. Read the order of priority here
  • There is no suggestion that the vaccine should be compulsory, including for NHS workers
  • The UK needs as many vaccines as it can get. “This is the start of a programme and not the end of a programme."

Just had to collect my daughter from nursery as she had a temperature of 38.7.

She was absolutely fine when I dropped her off this morning, but apparently ‘wasn’t herself’ as the morning went and then they checked her temperature.

Got a test booked for 12:30.

Investment mainly - they are concerned we won’t get it

Id hope (although who knows yet) that science and research/innovation/tech can be major areas of focus as a nation in future. It would be criminal if we didn’t capitalise on areas of strength. The fact is though that it will be up to all future UK governments (conservative, labour or whoever) to decide on funding and the future path of the nation. I avoid the whole brexit debate these days as we won’t really know anything until 1) what (if any) agreement is reached and how that impacts on our day to day lives 2) how then, we as a nation respond for example where we focus funding, whether we open ourselves up more globally or retrench and become a small inwardly looking nation. I’m a relatively optimistic person so still hope it goes ok

One of the things I've been impressed with is the speed of testing. We've had to do similar three times now (most recent on Sunday) and we had the test booked for within the hour with the results coming through overnight. Hope all goes well for you

UK able to speed up vaccine approval 'because of Brexit', claims health secretary
In shocking news turns out he was talking bollocks again. The Chief Exec of our regulator said it makes no difference as European law still applies until January 1st.
Dr June Raine, chief executive of British regulator the MHRA, is asked whether the UK no longer being part of the EU made any difference to the speed the regulator was able to complete the authorisation.

She says the regulator has been able to authorise the supply of the vaccine using provisions under European law which exist until 1 January.

I'd rather somebody who has a clue what they're talking about, tbh
I read something about this. It was to do with the US only accepting data from tests that take place in the US so it would only delay approval there. They said the timescale to approval in the EU and UK wouldn't be impacted.

I'll happily wait for the Oxford one if they push through the idea to get the union flag on it, I don't just want to prevent disease when I can have an injection of B

Cheers both, I’m hoping it’s just teething and/or a general virus.

Testing was quick to sort, although the details within the confirmation email states that you have to administer the test yourself to anyone under 3. That’s going to be a joy......

And if it does come back positive I assume we’ll have to do it again for our 2 month old, that’ll be even more fun!

Anyway, forget the kids; I don’t want to isolate with two under 18 month babies and a hormonal partner 24/7 for the next two weeks!

Group of people excluded from financial help because they won't have been trading long enough to get the self employed financial help. Basically have fallen through the cracks. Sunak seems to want to pretend they don't exist.
Absolutely tragic and unforgivable. I get how people fell through the cracks when they were rushing things in but we're months down the line now and these things have been flagged up repeatedly. No excuse at this stage.

Sunak was on TV the other day claiming he'd been having talks with Excluded and another similar group. Of course it was swiftly followed by both groups saying they'd repeatedly asked for talks but been refused.

Sure she'll be fine, as you'll no doubt know nurseries are full of all sorts of bugs.

UK able to speed up vaccine approval 'because of Brexit', claims health secretary
As he continues his morning broadcast round, Health Secretary Matt Hancock has claimed Brexit helped the UK become the first country in the world to have a clinically authorised vaccine.
He tells Times Radio: "Until earlier this year we were in the European Medicines Agency (EMA), because of Brexit we've been able to make a decision to do this based on the UK regulator, a world-class regulator, and not go at the pace of the Europeans, who are moving a little bit more slowly.
"We do all the same safety checks and the same processes, but we have been able to speed up how they're done because of Brexit."

Yeah, but we haven't left yet! Yeah, but Thalidomide!

It really shows a lot when we finally have some good news and people try to dismantle it to suit their obsessive agenda.

This is great news!

I must be an outlier. 5 days and no results so far. Not happy.

I mean getting the vaccine a week or two early is great, not convinced it’s worth destroying our entire economy and security apparatus for, but it’s nice.
