People forget we had over 20,000 flu deaths a few years ago. However for flu the variants are harder to predict and we have a huge infrastructure behind sequencing and targeting probable COVID variants which should give a great degree of confidence
All that and hopefully a simple inhale through the nose protection to use each morning while brushing your teeth. But we're putting a lot of resources (financial, technical and human) into keeping track of Covid and I can't see that being feasible longer term as it takes it away from other areas. We only know which variants are spreading because they're spreading rather than we identified them beofre they did so which is what we do with flu. We're then testing the vaccine on those variants and hoping they're effective against it (which, touch wood, so far they largely have been). It's a more reactive than proactive process.
As time goes on and we get more research done I'm sure we'll be able to predict with greater accuracy just as we do with flu but right now we're still playing catch up and learning.
Or taken through rolled up twenty pound notes in a nightclub? All that and hopefully a simple inhale through the nose protection to use each morning while brushing your teeth.

Oops you are absolutely rightUnfortunately its 100 - 200 a day not a week. That makes the figures 36.5K - 73K a year.
By comparison flu seems to average about 17K but has been below 2K some years and close to going over 30K other years. And of course that's a level of flu cases that means every winter the NHS goes into meltdown and has ambulances queuing up outside hospitals, something that for some reason now just seems to be accepted as inevitable.
Completely agree there is a point where we have to live with it but not sure comparing it to flu is helpful given the numbers being suggested. Just give us information that stands up to scrutiny. What number of deaths annually are we looking to get down to and how has that figure been arrived at, what is being done to ensure the NHS can cope with the additional associated hospitalisations and what is being put in place long term to minimise transmission.

What’s happened in Spain? 50 deaths today crept up. Hope we don’t have to go back to more restrictions. Still seems daft to remove the mandate on masks and distancing when infections are high
Me too but risky when they are talking about 2.5m infections a month. That’s a lot of long Covid. Allegedly 1m sufferers alreadyThe idea is clearly to let infections get high now rather than later, which I can understand
Then what, achieve herd immunity,it plateaus out?The idea is clearly to let infections get high now rather than later, which I can understand

Watch panorama and talk to people who’ve got it. If it’s important for you to feel you know more than medical professionals then fill your bootsYou mean post viral fatigue? Thats been around for years?
Its just been given a different name

No need for that. He’s expressing his concerns that are not without merit. All you're ever doing on here is poo pooing anything positive. On the football forum you're very knowledgable and informative, on here I've never seen a man so scared of anything.

Top of this page is pretty balanced from me I think about Nick and Grendel being helpful talking about getting back to normalExpressing concerns is fine. But i cant remember one time on this thread hes met anything with positivity.

Oh and the panorama programme even touches on that explaining that all viruses can leave semi permanent issues and expects most people to return to normal within 2-3 yearsTop of this page is pretty balanced from me I think about Nick and Grendel being helpful talking about getting back to normal
I’m not scared one bit of dying of Covid as the risk to me is tiny and I’m pretty sensible and aware what’s risky and what’s not in terms of masks and indoor activity. I’m also pretty fit and exercise to keep my weight down
I am fearful that if we don’t learn lessons we will keep repeating mistakes. We can open the things up we need to without throwing everything out like masks and distancing
Sorry to bring you down with my own negativity. I prefer balanced but I can take it on the chin if that’s how you feel

The vaccination programme is absolutely brilliantMaybe we should organise an open top bus parade to celebrate all the positive aspects of the coronavirus
You poo poo everything full stop to be honest, and how you think you have the right to slag off anyone who is worried about coronavirus is weird
Agreed. You didn’t offend me I’m happy we should express ourselves genuinely and open ourselves up to other opinions even when we disagree with them. Cheers misterApologies if I've offended i didnt intend too. And in regards too the learning lessons i agree with you completely. I just feel the long covid etc is unfortunately something we will have to put up with if we want any semblance of life going back to the good old days of 2019.
Unfortunately there will be loads more cases but my hope is that eventually this is going to run out of people to infect. The amount of people vaccinated, the amount with antibodies etc. Cant see how its going to keep going as it is

I find it hard to argue with others deeply held legitimate opinions across many different topics. I get annoyed with people that wind others up for a laugh or plays devils advocate to get a rise. But anyone who says they want things back to normal now has a point right!!!In fairness, I think we are both pretty polar when it comes to covid, but I have always found you respectful and open minded to listen to other people's opinions.
Considering the amount of scraps that thrive on these threads, that is a commendable asset!
