Coventry City given Football League award for providing families with an ‘outstanding (3 Viewers)

This doesn't illustrate what Coventry City are doing for kids. It demonstrates what football clubs are not doing and how the clubs and FL take the fan base for granted.

A few things on this .........

1) Part of me thinks the FL must surely be taking the piss??
2) I obviously can't comment as I haven't been to Sixfields, but the club may well be doing a lot of stuff for kids on match days.
3) pretty much 50% of clubs got the same award ......... Is it something to shout about? Is it a good piece of PR by the club? I think they should have just accepted this one and left it at that. It's nearly as bad as announcing the club has filed accounts on time!

Hey guys,

I read most of the threads on here but don't post a lot (mostly because I don't want to get entangled in some of the arguments that kick off).

Today's news about the Family Excellence Award has really got to me and I think it is a powerful indication of how out of touch the Football League are.

For what it's worth (probably not a lot) I have sent the following to the [email protected] address, in case anybody else feels like sending their own thoughts. I doubt I'll get much more than a copy and paste job in reply, but I felt like I had to say something...

Dear Football League,

Your organisation has just award Coventry City with a Family Excellence Award. After ignoring the families of fans in Coventry, moving the club 35 miles out of town and clocking up record-breakingly low attendances.

The story is long, arduous and doesn't need repeating here (though I do seriously wonder how much attention your organisation is actually paying to our plight) but there is real lasting damage being done to the Coventry community. While I appreciate your organisation is not the chief culprit for this, you are if nothing else an enabler and with laughable awards such as this the blood of our community spills onto your hands as much as anyones. I truly don't consider that statement to by hyperbolic.

The support base of Coventry City has now been split into angry, uncooperative factions and I am struggling to see how we will ever be reunited. The factions as I see them are:
1. Those who have decided to attend our "home" games at Sixfields
2. Those who have decided to stand on the hill beside Sixfields
3. Those who have decided not to venture anywhere near Sixfields, but listen to games on the radio and read match reports.
4. Those who have decided not to continue following the club at all

There is a significant amount of resentment and ill-will between some members of these factions, the divides between which are deepening the longer this crisis drags on. Importantly, the situation also gives rise to a fifth faction:
5. Those who have never seen their local team play AND NEVER WILL

This fifth faction is the only one which is likely to increase its numbers in the years to come, as no children are taken to their first games in Coventry.

A football club embedded in a community, nourishing generation after generation becomes larger than life. legacy stretches backwards beyond individual memory and forwards as far as one dare dream. In a short transient life the importance of institutions greater than oneself cannot be underestimated. They give us purpose, give us catharsis and give us respite. This season the families of Coventry have had to suffer without any of these valuable releases...and the club responsible win an award for it.

This is a terrible and permissive error on the part of your organisation, which paints an untrue picture of a broken football club.

Kind regards,

Karl

Aaarrgh! That's not the point! The point is regarding the way the kids are looked after when they are there.

No one is arguing about the whole Northampton thing.

But you don't recognise it as being insensitive to the thousands of fans that have been robbed of the opportunity to watch their team? Next season would have been my eldest's first ever match, she's spoken about it excitedly since she was three. She now can't go because we are not playing in Coventry.

I'm sure you and your son have a lovely time but surely you can understand why other supporters who don't attend, out of principle or logistics, feel aggrieved by the award?

I can see both sides of this and I think it's great that the people who make the experience at Sixfields more fun for the youngsters are winning something in recognition of this. The award is for them and not our owners who caused our exile 35 miles away - they've won nothing in my book and are costing us new support by their actions.

That about sums it up. I think I may well be copying and pasting that when I get home and sending it to the FL myself. I might change your name to mine though ;-)

Well this has made the ITV news. Typical that negative news gets coverage but good news doesn't.

If there hadn't been uproar would they have given it a mention? I very much doubt it

Ha really? Pr at its best ;)

Public reaction will be how the media want it to be, won't it?

Apparently they could only select a few of the tweets to read on air.

Really is being made out to be more than it actually is. Embarrassing really! You'd yhink as a club we'd be struggling for positive things to talk about. When one is found, that gets ridiculed and turns into a negative positive!

Wonder if other clubs go through shit like this.....

Football league have made a statement saying it was based on feedback from people attending games.

That's that I mean, it's being milked isn't it ;) the same as us being kicked out of the league

It would seem that some people are so used to being Tommy Opposite they have lost all discretion.

What was our good news? Must have missed it!

What I mean is we only get a mention when something negative happens. In this case, fans fury has made the news negative.

If we'd won this award, let's say at the Ricoh, people wouldn't be talking about it, it wouldn't be in the press, it wouldn't be getting slated, it wouldn't matter.

Human nature... Justice we expect, injustice we talk about.

If you were a cynic you would say the original telegraph article was designed to whip up fans fury.

Was it mentioned last year they missed out on this? Don't think so. Would have been had they won? No.

This isn't an award but a consumer satisfaction standard - like stars in a hotel. The CET I'm sure are ok with the response.

It can't be a fair representation can it? These people will keep going regardless? How is their feedback valid?

I know it seems a piss take and seems to show the league as clowns ,but I cant not say that the folk that have worked hard with the young fans and familys have been rewarded for doing a good job and fairplay to them ,like presleys done a good job under immence pressure so have the stewards and staff . you can only point the finger at one source in this instance and that's the owners ,we already know the league don't give a flyin .

Because it's just about the actual matchday experience and not the politics isn't it?

But the matchday experience is being "enjoyed" by only 10% of the previous years audience? How can you lose 90% of your "customers" and still win an award. Clearly the 10%'s view has to be dismissed?

Maybe it would be different if the 90% were there not enjoying it?

They aren't there because we are playing in Northampton Nick.

Really? The telegraph will have a big story in the morning.

My point being it wasn't an attendance contest was it? If 90% off fans haven't been how can they judge the experience?

My point being that the fact that 90% haven't been shows that clearly the experience is not a good one.... I haven't been yet.

.....Then again I haven't been to Chernobyl, but I don't need to go to know what it's like.
