Questions should be asked but for us without the full details of the decision making process it’s hard to pin it on anyone to be honest.

Dean Austin joined 13th December 2022, since he has joined we have signed the following players…

Jan 2023
Sean Maguire - Fail
Brooke Norton-Cuffey - Reasonable
Josh Wilson-Esbrand - Fail
Luke McNally - Good

2023 Season
Luis Binks - Merhh
Joel Latibeaudire - Merhh
Bobby Thomas - Merhh
Milan Van Ewijk - Reasonable/Good
Jay Da Silva - Fail
Yasin Ayari - Fail
Liam Kitching - Failed so far
Brad Collins - Fail
Ellis Simms - Good last season
Haji Wright - Good
Tatsu Sakamoto - Good
Victor Torp - Merhh

The signings made this season I won’t pass judgement on as it’s too early but they are…

Oliver Dovin
BTA
Rudoni
Bassette
Raphael
Ephron

Overall, very disappointing return since he has joined. If I was King and this guy was in charge of recruitment and we’d just spunked that much money up the wall I’d be super pissed.

the money we got from vik and gus was the poisoned chalice and the clubs then raised their asking prices to get as much of that pie from us as they could. I dont nessarsary think thats austins fault, its just they transfers havent been value for money yet.

Nah, we just thought we were Brentford and our scouting was infallible.

We spunked €2.5m on Torp who a Danish team let go for a few hundred k a year earlier.

Including Lampard and King?

Apparently Lampard is wary of his track record, knowing he needs this to work for his own career let alone the clubs future and is trying to be more involved in recruitment than Robin's was to prevent it

Dougs standing by Austin publicly as he's ut he's neck on the line and his ego won't allow him to lose face. However privately, he's seething at the amount pissed up the wall, but it would be yet again more compensation to let him go, so rock and hard place

There can’t be that long left on Austin’s contract, surely?

BNC was a good signing. Gutted we couldn’t get him back following year. Took him a few games to warm up but started to look a real threat. Had a real go at Wembley as well.

Appreciate the insights. Would surely be cheaper for Doug to pay Austin off than let him make more costly blunders. If he is seething I would imagine privatley that he would allow Lampard to bypass Austin if he can identify his own talent.

this is good to hear in some ways. Hope FL is telling them all what this "deck" really is!

Cost of keeping him more damaging currently.

Needs to get him sidelined if true and hand the reigns over to Lampard for a window or 2.
At least if he fucks up he'll be getting sacked for his own errors not someone else's.

Agree with most of the ratings. Kitching has to be a fail, MVE - one season wonder based on this year and Sakamoto has looked lightweight and poor since his return from injury but that isn’t on recruitment. For the summer signings:

Dovin - Potential and young. Lacks a proper GK coach.
BTA - Fail. Big waste of money.
Rudoni - Average so far. Downgrade on COH so Fail for now.
Bassett - TBD. Can’t see a position for him when wright returns. Great potential.
Raphael - N/A
EMC - TBD. Horseshit until the last 6 games. Potential to be a decent Champ player.

The fact King fronted Austin at the fans forum is worrying, Austin has no experience of working with big budgets and has overpaid for utter shit.

When you say fail, you need to factor in the transfer fee, like with Torp, he’s played average to well in parts but with the fee paid, we have definitely paid over the odds for an average L1 CM which is a recruitment failure. Out of all those players, unless you found someone gullible enough to pay based on last season (MVE) you’d be happy to get your money back on virtually all of them.

Bring back Chris Badlan. Austin Out.

The only duds we’ve actually had are Binks, Collins and Dasilva really but even then Dasilva has played 55 games for us and got 4 assists so he’s done something, he came with Championship experience unfortunately he hasnt been if the quality we expect but he’s not been a stupid or a bad signing.
Binks came off the back of a loan spell where he displayed good passing ability and an aggression at times to win the ball back which is perfect for what we want and we all wanted him to come back and praised the signing, he’s still really young he’ll show his quality soon (hopefully).
Thomas-Asante hasnt had an opportunity yet, there’s a reason he was top scorer for a playoff contender last year (their main threats were injured) but he had to fill their boots and scored a few goals, we knew he’d be a bit frustrating at times but he works hard and goals will come I bet when he gets his chance.
Thomas just not a dud whatsoever.
Kitching played his role last year in our best defensive period, whatever reason he lost his mojo we dont know but he’ll find it again, definitely overpriced but there is a good player in there.
Collins no clue why we signed him was in no way an improvement on Wilson and now his confidence is shot to bits it’ll be best for both parties that he moves on, nice bloke and its a shame it hasnt worked out but thats football.
Dovin was a good signing he’ll be worth quite a few more pennies than we signed him for in the future, he’s really really young for a keeper yet he’s already made his Sweden debut, and also played for his boyhood club Hammarby who are the 2nd best team in Sweden (also 2 clean sheets and 1 goal conceded in last 3 games).
Latibeaudiere was a free so we’re not gonna lose any money on him, he’s a leader and lacks a bit of quality and a lot of pace but makes up for it with attitude and aggression, he’s a jack of all trades master of none but sometimes you need squad players like that especially leaders like he is.
van Ewijk was a cracking signing, we got him for a bargain fee and he was just as promised last season and has an amazing energy around him, been off the boil this year but hasnt had any competition or rotation we’ve probably run him into the ground and forced him to play while his confidence is low and not gave him time out of the firing line, he’ll come good again he’s got far too much quality to not.
Torp has shown glimpses of a good player but maybe he’s at an age where we may not get to turn those glimpses into a 90 minutes, could be a good rotational player off the bench as we’ve already seen he does make an impact when he comes on.
Rudoni was a class signing, he’s going to be a quality player and you can see his far superior technical ability and defensive acumen to O’hare but why compare them they’re different players, Rudoni is often hit by the ‘O’hare replacement’ moniker so his workrate often gets spoke about but not many players have an engine like Cal, Rudoni was bought in to play a different style and position and we haven’t seen his best yet and he’s got 9 goal involvements in half a season (he’s a CM thats top numbers).
Haji is a top class player for this division, when he’s on it oozes quality and is undoubtedly one of the best in the division but the reason he’s in this division is because when he’s not on it he’s probably league 2, his first touch goes poor and looks a bit like a deer infront of headlights, as soon as he hits consistency he’s PL bound, if a chance falls anywhere in the opposition third I want him on the end of it.
Simms is a victim of his own success a proven goalscorer at this level having done it in two (one and a half) season at 2 different clubs, he’s a confidence player and he needs us to have confidence in him and get behind him to unleash his ability again.
Mason-Clarke, we’re reaping the benefits of being patient and playing him in his natural position now, not all wingers can play both sides, can fullbacks? No. Its a different game on each flank because you have 1 dominant foot, Ephron has a cracking cross on his weaker foot but his finishing is a lot worse, so his usual game of leaving defenders guessing and taking them on dominated by the right foot forward allows him to go inside or out effectively on the left but on the right he’s restricted as he’d be turning back on himself to go inside on the right as its difficult to quickly transition that way.
Tatsu is another good signing, yes he’s a bit lightweight but what do you expect he’s a small man who’s game is about technique and dribbling, was David Silva held back by being weak and small? No. Teams have found a way to prevent us damaging them from the right but thats not all down to Tatsu he’s very very inventive and creative on the right but its hard to deal with 3 men on your own when everyone else around you is static and the crowd is on your back for not having a go.
Bassette, the hate is forced but so is the love-in. He’s gonna be a top top quality player in the future but we cant allow that to crowd our judgements or expectations now because he’s very raw, talented but young, it will come with him 100% but he needs time its not Fifa you cant get someone up to 99 rated in 1 year.

Makes you start think retrospectively about the players we missed out on...

Stamenic and that Argentine winger seem huge bullets dodged.

I’ve thought this for a while tbf, Dean Austin is as culpable as anyone at the club for the utterly woeful performances we’ve put in. Yes, he’s not the head chef but he’s the one sourcing the ingredients, if all he’s provided is some anchovies, 1 egg, 50g flour, a block of lard and 4 raisins then it doesn’t matter who the head chef is, the cake is gonna taste shite.

Dean Austin and Aled Williams should definitely both be sacked, they’ve both gotten away with being dog shit awful for too long.
