I'm sure there is more coverage of Liam Payne dying than there was of the Queen when she died

BBC Breakfast have now been going on about it for about 15 mins non stop. Talking to his former teachers and his dance teacher and people from his childhood etc.

And the BBC news website yesterday had about 9 stories on it

I get it's so young to go and it's tragic, but does it warrant THIS level of coverage? 🤷

Maybe I'm missing something, but my missus and I didn't even know who he was.

Heard the name, but had no idea which band etc
I can't remember because we didn't have social media or 24 hour rolling news, but I would have thought John Lennon being shot would be the best comparison. Was that wall to wall too?

Yeah, it was, as I can remember.

Would have thought Lennon was so much higher profile though, considering he was a Beatle and was murdered too.

I get that there needs to be coverage here, but to this level?

I guess it's the times we are living in..

The Beatles were first, but with hype, media coverage and similar levevels of hysterical screaming kids the world over, I'd say these guys are modern day Beatles. Whether they're as talented is all personal choice, but they're undeniably as famous imo.

GMTV claimed the "world" was still "reverberating" with the news. I imagine they have got over it in Gaza by now. Sad situation, waste of a young life, move on. Can't help but think if its a non famous person struggling with mental health and found dead surrounded by cider and spice they would be written off as a dosser

I'd say the difference is 24 HR news schedules, we've now had Cowell's statement so it will probably quieten down now until the inquest and funeral, always a shame when someone that young dies and a lesson to fame hungry youngsters that their is a price to fame.

He achieved a lot more than the Queen did, to be fair.

Surely he’s about as famous as Jason Orange?

Sorry, but hearing about this blokes passing, I was more upset when they changed the font on my local Chinese Restaurant menu. And now I hear on the news that they want a statue of him in Wolverhampton! Come on. Ffs.

I’m glad it’s not just me who feels the coverage is totally OTT. Capped by the Leader of the House of Commons speaking about his death straight after referencing the death of Alec Salmond and the murdered Sir David Amis.Even MrsSB thinks its ridiculous and she is the nicest person I have ever met.

Banning me is one thing but deleting my tribute to Liam is just bizarre, the admin must have some serious hatred for me.

RIP Liam, we will always remember what you did for us.

They’re way bigger than the Beatles let’s be honest.
One direction 4 Uk number 1 singles and 4 US number 1 albums

The Beatles 17 UK number 1 singles and 19 US number 1 albums

Liam Payne not even the most famous, successful or talented of One Direction. His death is sad but not worthy of the OTT reaction of the media.

The Beatles are 100 years old of course they have more. Charting is also vastly different
now but if you believe records count for anything, One Direction took 1 week from their debut to have a US number one. How long did it take the Beatles?

You know nothing of One Direction evidently. Liam was the leader and most experienced of the group from minute 1. They’d not have survived without him.

Harry Styles is the most famous man in the world, the only Beatles member anyone under 30 has heard of is John McCartney.

The fact all the oldies on here know Liam Payne but not one of my friends could name a Beatles song other than Twist and Shout says it all.
So, as I said, Liam Payne was not the most famous, successful or talented member of One Direction - Harry Styles is.

I certainly couldn’t name a single One Direction song - I doubt many under 30’s in 50 years time will be able to either.

I thought Hairy Style was the main Wrong Direction bloke? Never knew the names of the others. By the way, how old are you? 12?
So you can’t name a One Direction song but you’re an expert on which member was the most talented? Got it.

The least talented member of One Direction would still be 20 times more famous than any of the Beatles. Not that there is a least talented member of course.

Not sure why all the hate. He's not done anything to you guys. If you don't like or know him that's fine, but you're going to quite an effort to let us know. All kinds of people listed on here I've not heard of.

It’s nothing about the individual, it’s the OTT reaction to his sad death that is the issue.

Plus the latest reincarnation of Boosh stirring it as usual.

I get that, but it's not like the days of 3 or 4 channels and easy to avoid if you want to

Totally agree.
Totally disagree and I love the Beatles and know little of these. The world is much smaller,,the hype is real and these guys are equal megastar the world over. Simply because you, I and the other dinosaurs on here don't follow them, we are not their manufacturered overhyped target audience.

You really think that they’ll be remembered and talked about around the world in 60 years time? 🤣

the Beatles were recognised worldwide, and that’s without social media hyping them up.

No I don't. But it's not about 60 years time, it's about now.

That says you need to get more friends.

My missus' two girls (20 and 17) are always singing Beatles songs around the house and I have never, ever played any Beatles songs to them.

Interestingly, there was a band playing at the bandstand here a few weeks ago (the Old Time Sailors) and they did a version of Yellow Submarine and everyone was singing along, kids and adults alike.

The 17 year old had a birthday party here and they were all singing along to Hey Jude. And everyone knows Imagine.

Like I say, go get some new friends. 🤪

Will have to agree to disagree

The level of coverage on this is way OTT and totally disproportionate to what it should be.

I get it's the way the world is now though. Everything is milked to death and everything bigged up.

To bring it back in football terms David Beckham, great footballer but not close to George Best, yet imagine if anything happened to him now. We're living in different times.

To be fair, I would say David Beckham is much more higher profile than George Best ever was.

David Beckham, for whatever reason, is totally global.

Because (imo) he transcends football as these guys in 1D do. They're as much models and icons as they are singers.

Entirely agree. The media must have leapt out of bed with excitement at the news. RIP everyone says then do exactly the opposite. Add modern day grief junkie culture and the whole thing is hugely distasteful

People are taking time off - bereavement days. Fuck Knows how they would cope if there was a real tragedy.

Where have you seen this? Just searched it on the usual socials and all that's coming up is people joking about needing to take bereavement leave and people complaining about how shit most companies bereavement leave in the UK are. Seems a lot of companies only allow you 3 days for an immediate family member.
