It’ll fix a problem

It’s a pledge card, not a manifesto. He’s not literally going to put a one line bill in front of Parliament is he?
You’re missing the point, why pick that number when you, I and anyone associated with education know that’s it’s a spurious and ultimately meaningless amount that won’t touch the sides in fixing the problem. It wouldn’t even cover a quarter of the loss to the profession each year.

If he was going to make a vague meaningless gesture than I’d rather he say ‘an overhaul of the teacher training model to recruit and retain teachers, to fix the education crisis’

That would be a genuinely terrible campaign slogan.

So these he says are his first steps, but will take up to 10 years to implement. If people want to see real change and not slow unnoticeable change other than the face, what are they actually voting for? If you want my vote tell me something you're going to do that's different on day 1 and every day thereafter.

I don’t know about day one but I know they’ve pledged to repeal the laws that the tories bought in to try and prevent workers having the ability to strike in the first 100 days. Things like the minimum service bill. This is important for all workers because unlike other countries the right to strike isn’t enshrined into UK law so the ability to strike in the UK is easily blocked by suppressive laws such as the Tories minimum service bill.

They’re also going to stop paying hundreds of millions of pounds to Rwanda for a failed publicity stunt on day one. Let’s stop sending millions to Rwanda let’s fund the NHS instead would be a good slogan ;)

Bringing the Rail Service back into public ownership when franchises run out is a good one. Won’t happen on day one but that should mostly happen by the end of that parliament.

I like the idea of Great British Energy. It’s all a bit word salad at the moment but the current system is broken, we’re too reliant on the international market for oil and gas allowing multinationals to make record profits of the back of the cost of living crisis. The proposal as I understand it is to increase the threshold for windfall tax to pay for publicly owned renewables. At the moment the French government owns about 50% of UK offshore whereas the British government own FA. The french are basically subsidising energy bills in France of the back of profits from UK customers. Taking back control would be a good slogan ;)

@skybluetony176

I wouldn't bother wasting valuable finger time typing out a reply.

Some on here are institutionalised to being in opposition. They love it.

Some on here are so obsessed with moaning that they would rather a Tory government.

Some on here, I honestly believe that whatever you proposed, it wouldn't be enough.

Some on here won't even bother to vote in a general election.

Some on here don't care about the state of the country.

Some on here just enjoy soapboxing about issues.

Fuck 'em!

If you don't vote or don't stand, then don't fucking moan.

TL/DR?

Remember kids, you’re not allowed to expect more of the person trying to become Prime Minister… you just have to be grateful he exists.

And play a part in choosing them.

Disappointed with your choice of pronoun there @Ian1779.

I see the Dutch are going to bring in its strictest ever immigration policy, they will remove people by force if they dont have a valid residence permit. Finally a nation with a backbone, its a shame we are so weak and pathetic. Hundreds land on the beaches every day paid for by us, hopefully one day we will get a Primi minster with a spine who ships them back to the dumps they came from.

I mean I’ve just rattled four things off the top of my head, three of which are very distinctively left wing socialist policies. You might not think that the whole package is left wing or socialist enough and you might despise Starmer but what’s the alternative? Not vote risking enabling a Tory to get in? No thanks. I’d rather suck it up and vote for Starmer and at least change some of the direction of travel because the tories aren’t going to renationalise railways, set up a nationalised energy firm, repeal laws designed to stop workers striking.

I didn't think France was that much of a dump, but they do all seem keen to leave by whatever means.

Odd stance from Netherlands too with land borders, I mean our shores are infinitely harder to get to, but surely unless they repatriate they can't simply drop them in Belgium or Germany. Could be heading back to war torn countries unless they're sending the Ukrainians and Syrians to Rwanda!

Also when has voting ever been anything other than voting for the least stinkiest shit. Shouldn’t be like that but that is the reality.

They weren’t off the top of your head though Tony and furthermore the Tories have never wanted these things yet you were a loyal Cameron babe

Yes these 3 policies do look distinctively left wing, dig a little deeper and you’ll see that Great British Energy is PFI Mk 2 for example.

Meawhile Reeves wheels out her classic line of ‘Tough spending rules’ - more austerity basically.

You seem entirely ambivalent about that which is the most disappointing.

Oh good more strikes, where do I sign up? Only a soundbite keep the unions onside as they won't strike under Labour now (yes I'm aware of 78!)

Fwiw I selfishly want things that nobody is really pledging.

More help with tax breaks for neglected middle earners, subsidised rail, scrapping HS rail, investment in British industry, cutting taxes, affordable housing, skilled immigration, tighter borders, scrap tv licence, more police, less admin waste on public services with budget moving to front line staff, less spent on defence overseas, give up the Falklands, Gibraltar and Northern Ireland, spend the money at home.

Will await the manifestos but assume I'm not really aligned to anything! No issues with renationalisation either, quite happy with a single rail network, electric, gas and water too, just not top of my agenda, but not precious on them remaining private.

Politically homeless but certainly not ready to nail my colours to Starmer although he'll get in with a landslide regardless so fairly pointless. Even he can't fail, Labour will win in spite of him and not because of him.

Don't panic, fully aware most won't agree, no mention of education or much substance on law or environmental policy, just my ramblings for Tony to pull apart 😉

Cheaper rail tickets and scrapping HS2 are opposing moves. HS2 increases capacity which increases volume and should theoretically increase supply vs demand.

How so?

Reeves will have trouble meeting her spending goals through austerity as the Tories found out. It’s not cheap.

Theoretically yes, but you know they'll be at a premium on HS2 and the amount of traffic that standard network reduces by, they'll remove more carriages and / or services. The prices we pay for overcrowded, dirty, late and low quality service is ridiculous. At weekends for football it's even worse than commuting. That's a consistent failing. It was poor when it was national and got progressively worse under private. Not sure renationalisation will fix it as so inefficient and poor it will cost billions to bring it up to scratch. So Much better and cheaper across Europe. Should've spent the HS2 money on upgrading the current service and I can't blame Tory or Labour government for that, it was cross party and all been a shitshow imo

They can upgrade the existing and pay for HS2 and subsidise cheaper tickets, it's just a choice they've made not to really. I spend enough money on rail tickets last season to pay for a holiday abroad, like you say it's a disgrace.

Starmer has offered 40k more 'appointments' each week in the NHS, "paid for by a crackdown on tax avoidance and non-doms".

Does this mean with GPs? Or just appointments? It's so facile

They are sick of their country being invaded by hoards of childless males hanging around streets and town centres doing nothing and being paid for by the workers of the country.

Have you had a walk in town these days, you’d be luck to find a born and bred Englishman. You have groups of foreign blokes just hanging around doing nothing all day every day. Everyone is burying their head in the send the country is a rudderless ship.

It’s not going to be selling direct to us as the consumer, is it being funded from the public purse, and if so who’s distributing it?

That's why making such a nonsensical commitment is setting yourself up to fail, not that failing to meet a silly fiscal rule really matters it's more about your credibility

Fiscal rules are pure politics. Labours is extremely vague “moving towards” and “by the end of five years” a lot.

The idea it’s going to cause austerity is a nonsense. For a start there’s nothing left to cut. But also austerity doesn’t actually save money. It’s just the normal boring “everyone who isn’t Corbyn is actually a Tory” meme.
