Any idea why people buy houses (especially new builds) with such tiny windows? Every room in my house has a window for its entire length. I would go crazy with so little light and view.
The official reason is energy efficiency, most people believe the real reason is cost. A square metre of brickwork is far cheaper than a square metre of glazing.

Why does anyone need acres of land attached to their property? Have I said they can't have a nice house? No. Have I said they can't have any land at all? No. Did I say that that land should be confiscated? No - they should be paid for it. I'm saying when we have such a need for new housing why should some people have massive amounts of land, some of which they probably never even visit, while others can't even get a house to live in?

As for 'creating wealth', I think what you mean is 'hoarding wealth'. We've seen these 'wealth creators' and their shit contracts, shit working conditions and shit pay leading a race to the bottom for workers. That's why we have so many people that are struggling just to keep their head above water while the 'wealth creators' are rolling in money. In another post you say the poor don't create wealth. How about giving the money to those further down the social scale in better pay and conditions, even company ownership for employees, and those poor people can be wealth creators because they'll have more money to spend on goods and services and help create jobs because of that. Because you know the thing about wealthy people - they already have enough money to spend if they want to, but they choose not to.
OK, whatever, comrade. You have to create wealth before you can horde it. Unless you are Putin or one of his chums - in which case you just steal it.

Leaving opening for it as well lintel ect, but obviously most glass for a window would be made up of smaller pieces.

If you look at houses you can see when bricks were cheaper or more expensive than glass. Cheaper glass = bigger windows (1960’s), cheaper bricks = smaller windows (now).

So you'd rather make no capital gain in your life than pay a bit of tax on it, sounds plausible.
I suppose capital gain tax would mean less inheritance tax.
If someone had to sell their property to pay for social care, which some get for free, should they pay capital gains tax then?
I’ve paid more than a bit of tax in my life.

It's not a new thing. Most of the housing in Coventry is on what would at one point have been the land of someone's estate, and like today a huge amount of wealth can be traced back to inheritance at some point. Much of it was someone's hunting grounds at one point. Would you be happy that at some point someone didn't want your house built because it was on their land? As time goes on and we see that inequality isn't right lands will (and should) continue to be questioned and get smaller.

I'm a keen gardener and would love to have numerous different types of garden, but there is no way I would ever actually considering owning the amount of land needed to do it because it would be massively unjust. I couldn't justify having the chance to indulge my hobby and passion at the expense of someone else having their own property.

It's not like I'd start with those with moderate lands (though I do think those with a decent sized garden should not be allowed to also have an allotment). I'd start with the Crown. When you can say your garden is Cornwall then yes, you need it redistributing so other people have the chance to own their own house and the land it comes on.

And the religious orders?

I'm all for a bit of wealth redistribution, but I didn't expect to see the politicsof Mugabe being advocated as policy in the runup to an election!

I’ve paid more than a bit of tax in my life.

The tax could be offset against the costs of their care

I've played plenty of tax in my life to date as well, but have not, unlike you, been the beneficiary of massive property value inflation.

Land ownership very murky in this country. Just finding out the final beneficiary behind it all and making all the geospatial data open would be a good start. Then at least we know who to aim the pitchforks at. I’m not sure we’re so short of land that we need to start taking it back though. Land Value Tax would be a good start though.

The culture of envy is completely alive here as usual, jealous twisted moaners who want to be handed everything someone else has worked for !

I think you have both conflated social democracy with something different.

On what basis do you make the assumption that I have been the beneficiary of massive property value inflation? Without going in to the details, I can assure you that I haven’t.

If you think that any CGT would be offset against the costs of a private nursing company, you must be totally deluded.

We could have an air that you breathe tax too!

This is still a great country. From london, to cornwall/Devon to the lakes. As a nation we spend a lot of time talking it down because of frustration with politics, weather etc and take so much for granted, but we’re lucky to have been born here
Totally agree (weather is actually not too bad really, we tend not to have droughts or be cut off because of the snow!). What does annoy me is a certain type of 'patriot' trying to take away parts of Britain that make it Great by their small-mindedness, and trying to claim parts of it for their own.

I'd rather Starmer sit in front of a Union Flag than Tommy Robinson!

Lol - it’s the tooting popular front

Let me guess you don’t have much of a garden and live in a terraced property

Cheer yourself up and watch the trooping of the colour
