Is putting up taxes Tory? I'd be more than happy for taxes to go up to fund spending projects, work, and a redistribution of wealth. They could also subsidise water, electricity, gas from increased tax revenues, too...

If happily pay more taxes for those things too. But we know that's not going to happen.

But putting up taxes after promising not to, and putting up taxes while other countries cut taxes, is definitely Tory.

Oh and another episode of Tories gonna Tory

Should be such an easy question.

"Do you intend to earn money from other work outside of this demanding and time consuming job? If yes, go do that job instead,"

Glad to see them finally take the cost of living crisis seriously.
Well, we already had the Tory MP who said those on Universal Credit might like the £20 boost, but didn't necessarily need it, then said his colleague on £80k a year + expenses had to do outside work in order to be able to afford to look after his family.

I bet they've got so much kompromat on Johnson.

At least Stewart had some principles and realised it would not be right to go, unlike his boss.

If only, eh.

At least he might've been a Tory you felt you could work with and have an honest, in depth discussion on policy with. Would probably disagree with him a lot of the time, but you could end up with some decent compromises and understanding.

Literally can’t help himself 🤦‍♂️. I personally think he’s done ok of late in relation to Ukraine, at least he’s come across as a serious politician… and then this.
They say that situations like this are a gimme as a politician as people want to be supportive and you've got to be totally incompetent to fuck it up. Just have a grave expression on your face, a serious tone of voice and a sympathetic message and you'll do well.

What exactly has he done over Ukraine? We have been lamentable and slow over the refugees issue.

We were pushing other countries to take the situation more seriously a lot earlier than many did. We have trained military and provided arms to Ukraine before pretty much every other nation and prior to the start of the conflict, some of this also pre dates Johnson (so can’t give him credit for everything). We don’t know how things would’ve turned out in those first few days if we hadn’t.

I agree about refugees though, pathetically slow

True. But we overplayed our hand. They started taking it seriously while we stagnated meaning we’re now at the bottom of the pile. Even more so when you consider our unenviable position of being able to do the most as we’ve aloud ourselves to be Russias laundry coupled with the golden visa scheme that Putins henchmen took full advantage off.

Bottom of the pile ?! Come on Tony, I know you don’t think much of the government but I think that’s a bit OTT

Steve. We’re the money laundering capital of the world and there’s over 2500’s Russian oligarchs who have taken advantage of the golden visa scheme. I think we’re bottom of the pile not only in numbers but also as a percentage of what we actually could do. You’re delusional if you think otherwise.

Possibly on refugees, as I’ve already said our action on which was pathetically slow but in terms of assisting Ukraine generally, which is what we’re talking about, nowhere near bottom of the pile.

Read a variety of papers, check what Zelensky has been saying in particular in relation to our involvement and other nations and if you still believe we’re bottom of the pile then fair enough but doubt that will be the case.

Johnson comes across as having a major inferiority complex. Everything has to be ‘world beating’, ‘world leading’ etc.

It’s the kind of tactic trump used. We all know why he does it, these words stick in peoples minds, whether true or not. it’s how many people believe them which is more important

I’m sure once the war is over and Ukraine have joined the EU then Zelensky will be rushing to hold an in-out referendum in the name of freedom.

it will of course under eu rules take what about 20 years to qualify for membership?

So what's Rishi going to do to help us all in the spring Budget today?

Fuck all, presumably.

Guessing he'll blame everything on the Ukraine war and hope everyone forgets that this was all on the cards well before the war.

Then make some tax cuts before the next election to show us how wonderful and generous he and his party is.

You’re in a positive mood PVA 😊

To be fair his hands are tied to some extent. Cost of government borrowing is increasing due to rises in interest rates, which will continue although guessing inflation is bringing down true cost of debt. The Ukraine war is causing a lot of the issues and will continue to do so especially energy and food (due to wheat and fertiliser costs) and pressure to increase defence spending

For what it’s worth I’d:

Reduce fuel duty by say 10p (or reduce VAT on fuel)
Still implement NIC increase for nhs/social care but raise thresholds so lowest paid don’t have to pay it or tweak income tax thresholds to deliver the same result. I’d suggest delaying but don’t think things will improve much in 6-12 months
Bring in one off windfall tax on larger energy co’s profits, or encourage additional immediate investment in UK energy generation by same companies. Channel windfall tax into smaller business support to assist with their energy costs as these are going through the roof and will in turn increase product costs/inflation
In Oct bring in further energy assistance for poorest as cap will go up again

By all accounts some middle/higher income earners built up savings during pandemic so at least for a short period there should be a buffer, hence the focus has got to be mainly on the poorest in society. And before anyone suggests it, we can all currently see what printing more money has done…increased asset prices (benefitting the more well off) and together with post Covid demand and now war, has caused a massive inflation spike, again squeezing the poorest. Inflation was a major issue before the war even started
