Let's tear down every single statue of every single historic figure in the UK and every building that may have been erected through dodgy means.
Yes, .......and then everyone will be happy .
Funded a lot of Bristol through bequests.to be honest I'd never heard of this Colston fella before today. But I've now found out he brought 84,000 slaves from Africa and 19,000 died en route. I do wonder why did we have a statue of a man like that up in the first place?
Statue erected 80 odd years after slavery was abolished and was the statue was widely hated in Bristol.to be honest I'd never heard of this Colston fella before today. It's complicated stuff around that time.
I guessing the Bristol colson hall was named after him.to be honest I'd never heard of this Colston fella before today. But I've now found out he brought 84,000 slaves from Africa and 19,000 died en route. I do wonder why did we have a statue of a man like that up in the first place?
Now then now then.Jimmy Savile raised a lot of money for Stoke Mandeville but they haven't got a statue of him (I've posted that off the top of my head, please don't tell me they have).
More Facebook shite from you. Are you even capable of an original thought? And no black man in sight no doubt. Hijacked by the left/antifa tossers.
While the rest of Lancashire was boycotting Confederate cotton those cunrs were making them shipsI saw a documentary that Liverpool has been built a lot on slavery too in the past.

It's a bit more complex in the past though, and if you airbrush Colston do you destroy Bristol itself next, given a lot of its wealth is based on such things?Jimmy Savile raised a lot of money for Stoke Mandeville but they haven't got a statue of him (I've posted that off the top of my head, please don't tell me they have).
Loads of black folk on the protestMore Facebook shite from you. Are you even capable of an original thought?
It's very good, fwiwthey've got a slavery museum up there. Apparently no holds barred acknowledgement of the citys part in the slave trade. I always meant to visit when I was working up there but never got round to it.

Far better to hold up the mirror than wipe it away, ask the difficult questions about society as a whole. What you don't want us some kind of imperialist version, but you risk an enlightenment version if you hide things away.
It's in the fabric of the city, it's in the fabric of our nation. We can't be responsible for the past, we can strive to be better in the present, but we can't ignore it either.
Nah, he threw 19000 people into the sea and now he's down their himself. It's a bit more complex in the past though, and if you airbrush Colston do you destroy Bristol itself next, given a lot of its wealth is based on such things?

I couldn't give a toss. You'll read them all first thing in the morning anyway. The PE teacher weirdo doesn't get what being on ignore means.

No one celebrates the slave trade. We all acknowledge it. We know it was wrong. We've known it for quite some time. You're stating the bleeding obvious.Nah, he threw 19000 people into the sea and now he's down their himself.
People saw the slave trade as abhorrent even then.
Recognise the past but dont celebrate it

Nah leave the statue at the bottom of the water.so perhaps replicate the Liverpool museum and stick the statue in there where the context can be appreciated rather than pride of place on a harbour but I get your point.

Museums are hidden away. You said yourself you didn't go to the one in Liverpool.so perhaps replicate the Liverpool museum and stick the statue in there where the context can be appreciated rather than pride of place on a harbour but I get your point.

Big chip on his shoulder. He's been wronged over several centuries.I’d imagine he’s a struggler in the class room. I am waiting for lockdown to be released and hear the knock on my door when he kicks my head in, I think I may need police protection from big bad David
Many Bristolians have been campaigning to have the statue taken down for years.I guessing the Bristol colson hall was named after him.
You're right. I suppose he must have pumped a lot of money into Bristol at some point.
But the fact is that if enough people had lobbied the authorities to remove this statue in the ensuing weeks and the council had agreed it would have been symbolic . It would have shown willingness to acknowledge that the statute represents oppression and insults a significant section of the population . As it is, that opportunity has now gone.
These people aren't going about this in the right way.
There's been controversy about the statue, and the wording on the statue, for ages.i think that was my point, seems this statue was in a prime location which sort of glorified him without any reference to his misdeeds but like I say, first time I'd heard of him today so I don't really know the whole context of his story.
The hall has also had it's name changedMany Bristolians have been campaigning to have the statue taken down for years.

Or heavens forbid have connections to IRA terrorist, or do very little about the anti Semitic views of a lot of his own party back benchers.Imagine if Jeremy Corbyn had have had historically said similar things.
11k signed a petition.Oh right, like I say, not aware of the history. I know reading about it today it said some locals have been unhappy about it for some time.

It would be making a big statement if the council decided to put the statue back up.i think that was my point, seems this statue was in a prime location which sort of glorified him without any reference to his misdeeds but like I say, first time I'd heard of him today so I don't really know the whole context of his story.
