I would have loved to have seen Simms come on for Godden and then Wright and Simms playing together for a change. Didn’t feel any of our strikers were good today so probably a chance to take Godden off and try the “dreaded” Simms/Wright combo.
Agree. I would like to see Wright and Simms up front.

at the moment though, both players are a waste of money. That’s the brutal assessment

A lot of posters routinely breaking the SBT forum policy "do NOT mention former players". I see you all, I will be messaging admin to get you all banned.

Godden up top is the stuff of nightmares. He was anonymous for most of the game tonight. When he did get the ball he either slowed the ball down or couldn't control the ball.

We need to go one up top but definitely not Godden.
Yeah exactly, no pace or real control, not that any of our strikers were on it today it seems but don’t think Godden has the pace for bursting through defences as a lone striker. I’ve no idea what we try going forward though, each one of our strikers seems to have some sort of weakness.

I think that at least for a while, given we’ve spunked 11 million on them they need to start just in case we are wrong

How likely do you think it is, after signing both Simms and Wright just this summer, that we will be offloading them in January?
Unlikely. But that's because they've been unbelievably shite, and no other mugs will pay anything like what we have.

being realistic, the whole squad and therefore, the whole team, is disjointed. Lots of young, flair players, with little experience of the Championship. Robins has to work to make the players fit his system.
equally worrying, this is a tough Championship and at the moment, we are well off the pace.
relegation shouldnt be a worry though.

Kelly was brilliant tonight for me. MVE and Da Silva look great. We tired on 70-75 and Hull were pushing. They're a good team and that’s a cracking stadium. A good, entertaining game. Feels like a loss but that’s a good point.

Wright was woeful. Didnt look that bothered. Balls would go past him and there was no endeavour to get it or hassle.

I thought our passing was quite slick tonight and although both Kelly and Eccles tried long range shots, we don’t shoot much as a team do we?

I said it at the time but the Wright miss at 0-1 has cost us. The one he flashed over the bar.

Did you see Simms miss the chance of the game?

That was no worse than Godden putting it wide from a few yards out.

I'd play Sakamoto and Allen upfront before trying Wright and Simms.

At least we know Sakamoto and Allen can play football.

Not rocket science. Simms has history of doing it in the Championshp. Wright played in a pub league. Therefore I have more confidence in Simms turning it around. I.e my initial po
Simms is a proven goal scorer in this league.

I can only judge on what I've seen so far, and alarm bells have been ringing for a few games now.

How long are we going to give him before it's OK to make a judgement?

I get no pleasure in saying it, but I'm worried we've bought a dud.

Gyokeres took quite a few games to get off the mark, Mcnulty was the same, but both certainly showed signs of having qualities. Simms has offered absolutely fuck all, and Wright's not much better.
Simms wasn't a gamble, he has done it at this level already. Everyone else got a tune out of him. What was possibly a gamble is if we are not playing a system to suit him or thought we could shoe horn him into one then that's probably a misalignment between coaching staff and what the recruitment team have gone out looking for.

This was a new recruitment team thrown together quite quickly, did they know what they were looking for or just picking out players they've scouted for other teams they worked for with different styles? Who knows.

I thought we were superb tonight in most areas MVW is coming good now, in fact most of our guys looked superb until the ball went up to our multi million pound striker. It’s been said before by others I know but FFS ……both Simms and Wright look bang average at this level. They’re making Godden look un droppable 🤷‍♂️

I think that’s pretty astute.

But I maintain my original assessment: we spent too much on Simms. It was a transfer based on a kid in a sweet shop with too much money to waste.

I have similar concerns about Wright

Didn't someone write that he plays off the left wing cutting in? In which case, why not try:

------------------Godden-----------
Simms--------------------------------Sakamoto

Then we get Sakamoto in too!

Simms had a little purple patch of 7 goals in 17 matches at this level, and 1 goal in 11 matches in the Premier league.

It's actually a myth that he's proven in the championship.

Much the same as Mcnulty who had a good half a season in his entire career.

I'd say that is reasonably proven. You can't dismiss it as a fluke yet.

The problem is how on earth we get the best out of him, plus his price tag-that's a lot of pressure and both strikers look perpetually concerned.

Its fair to challenge the fee, I'm with you, it's £3.5m and up to £8m I think with add ons? If we trigger those add ons (I think one being promotion) then it was probably worth the £8m we may end up paying.

I think as a club / fan base we are still getting used to talking about these sums of money too, it's new territory, but then I look around at transfers fees and these kind of numbers just seem like the norm now for average championship level players.

You do it by working hard with him on the training ground and motivating him to keep his head up. We genuinely seem to have some fans who have written him off already.

People just never learn.

Can Cov fans accept that we are a mid table side? Ultimately, that’s the problem

We came within five minutes of beating the form team at their place. We’ve come within 15 of beating probably the best team at their place. We’re not a million miles off. A little more energy and steel and we’d be sitting pretty right now. Those things can come.

No he hasn't!
He scored 7 goals in a loan spell at Sunderland where they played everything through him. Other than that he's done fuck all.

Like McNulty at every club other than here for 6 months.

21 goals in 67 games before us as a young man not playing every week is not the Kevin Drinkell you are painting

You're right, he had Jack Clarke and Diallo playing behind him, in a very attacking Tony Mowbray side, he was always going to score in that team. In our side, be lucky to hit 5 goals this season.

His record says he’s not. But unless he has a Vik style turnaround I’ve no idea how he’s got his record.
He had a 17 game spell at Sunderland (7 goals) that has influenced everyone's opinion of him, the reality is he's a poor footballer.

If you look at Mark McNulty and judge him on 5 months here, he'd be world class, but the reality is he's failed everywhere else. My biggest fear is that Simms isn't a good striker and we've pissed money up the wall.

I mean, he didn't have long tonight and Hull were chasing the game...he needs a bit more time.

Agreed.
The issue here is that people on SBT are frightened to admit the blindingly obvious.

This Championship is tough. It’s worth looking at other fans forums. There are at least a dozen clubs who think they are top six contenders. Expectation management is always a factor for morale.

WTF does that even mean? He's fucking woeful. Wright isn't any better. To be honest I'd start Godden as a lone striker (as hes the best of a piss poor bunch) and play 2 attacking midfielders supporting him.

But tbf, never mind a Hamer replacement, we desperately need 2 strikers in Jan.
Absolutely clueless you are.

2 strikers in Jan after spending 11 fucking million on 2 strikers in the summer?

Statuesque Godden as a lone striker?
