The odds are any permanent signing made in January is a distressed purchase. Not really what you want and having to overpay for it

The exceptions to this rule are few. January business is minimal and mainly done by those in a desperate position. Hull will be busy.

In the mean time we must cover the obvious holes leaving Frank's team the rest of the season to evaluate properly and reset in Summer.

To state the bleedin' obvious - we need two or three loans all concentrated in defence, at least one to be a cynical old pro of a central defensive midfielder who is a strong leader. See Dennis Wise, Matty James

The only exception I can think of would be any player we had targeted last summer but were unable to get the business done by the deadline. Otherwise I would eschew permanent signings altogether.

That's if any player targeted in the summer is still wanted after the change to Lampard

...there might be the odd central defensive midfielder don't you think? The need has not changed along with the manager. If Dean Austin is any good, it will be a not dissimilar list that Lampard is appraising

Maybe. But same position possibly different profile. For example Robins may want a ball playing centre back. Lampard might want an organiser and committed centre back. You may have a target that hits both criteria or not

Not really a January-related point, but does anyone know how Stamenic has been getting on in Greece? Doesn't look like he's played much. Missing out on him was felt to be a big letdown in the summer, but is he actually any good?

Didn’t Doug say he was a Sheaf replacement?

Anybody we sign in Jan needs to come straight in none of this leaving them at their club rubbish. Although most Han deals are panic overpriced there will be the odd one where the club wants some cash in the last few months of a contract.

Been looking at rumoured free agents and loans in the league.

Louie Barry I think could be a good one to give us some more depth for tats.

Ryan Kent’s been rumored for Preston. Could be a good fit for then ten role? To be honest would have gone for Todd Cantwell earlier and think he would be good in a Lampard possession side and offer us a fair bit of creativity (if not wrong got the most key passes this year?).

Struggling to experienced CB feel like we missed this chance earlier in the year. Feel it’s more likely Kitching gets sold and replaced

Not really January shouts more summer ones but jack Stephens contract up in summer could be good for some leadership on a free? And like the look of Thelo Aasgard from wigan a no.10

Just checked he's out of contract in the summer, so may be affordable, if Forest pay off some of his wages. We would need to offload JDS or Bidwell though.
He will be 30 at the start of next season, hardly fits Doug's plan to develop and sell on.

If we do OK in December then I would not expect much business, maybe loaning out a player whose contract ends this summer who is not likely to get an extension for a Premier club loanee.

At the moment I think the lack of depth at right back is the biggest issue, a pacey and talented 2nd half sub makes sense, MVE playing so many minutes makes it more likely he will lose form or pick up a long term injury.

Barry plays on the left and Villa will want him to start.

On CBs, wonder if we could look at John Egan from Burnley. Hes out of contract at the end of the year and while he’s only started three he’s been on the bench all season which would indicate he’s fit enough to play but not fancied to start?

Could be a small fee and a two year deal?

He's 32 now.

How does that fit in to Doug's master plan?

Taking Doug’s words at face value, he did say at the fan forum he isn’t opposed to signing players with no sell on if they can take the team to where they need to be.

Even a one and a half year deal would be good business imo to add some real experience to the back line to help develop what we have and help on the pitch.

We need to address the obvious gaps at CB and LB first before we start stacking our already stacked front line with more forwards.

I’ll maintain that he’s a fantastic player, a modern CDM with a range of passing and great vision, mobility and aggression.

He’ll stagnate over there in Greece if he’s not getting enough time on the pitch. Maybe he was the wrong character for us, as he seems to have been dazzled by the money from Forest.

He’ll be too expensive I think, they probably want £10m for him.
Seen Boro are after him apparently so would assume it could be a cheaper deal with some expensive add on requirements. But get the points that he isn’t what we needed. Expecting Doug to do it now 🤣

I would be looking at Tanganga, moving on or swapping Kitch plus cash for Tanganga. John Egan another great option

Centre midfield I would go for a enthusiastic choice Norwich City's Marcelino Nunez.
Another shout is Wolves centre mid Luke cundle, has played on loan for Swansea, Plymouth and Stoke, still only 22.

My priority is a new centre back, I would look to move Kitching and DaSilva on, we might be lucky to raise £4 million quid moving those 2 on.

I would then use Binks as a left back when we need to.

Bidwell- 1 year extension new contract
Tavares - low wages, 1 year extension, good backup
Sheaf has 18 months left on his contract, we must make this a priority, off him a 1 year extension if he rejects, we sell him immediately, we will recoup £15 million or just under for him.
Simms- keep Simms for now.

A resonable strategy for horse trading, something along those lines will be done to reinvigorate the squad.

Not too sure about Fabio though especially considering Raphael should be slotting into similar roles, I would hope Obiwku might have a breakout year next season and that would do, only seen him once versus MK in 2023 pre season, he has a great touch and linked up well with Kasey Palmer.

Wonder if Millwall or the player would be open to selling Tanganga considering he’s starting and he just joined this year. Good player tho and a good age to where he can stay for a while.

Nunez, I think aid a bit over ambitious for January, Luke Cundle would a be a great shout and think Wolves are trying to move him on but the price is 4 million which is a lot for us in January. But could be lower since they didn’t manage to sell in him in August.

Loan to buy maybe could be a good option for him and think it might be one I’d look at.

Wouldn’t keep Fabio, especially if we sign a good cam, as assume we’d see Rudoni more on the right wing.

Happy to sell Dasilva but think we do need a new left back, was looking at the positions on Saturday and Bidwell was playing further up than a back three with Sheaf dropping in to help protect. Think the MLS player could be a good shout.

I'm not sure really after signing practically a new squad worth of players over the past 18 months that we can afford to keep bringing more in. I'd be surprised if there was much activity in January.
I think 1 loan in and 1 loan out will be it.

There's funds available and we clearly need reinforcements at both full back positions. LB a starter with Bidwell moving on in the summer and RB a backup to ease the burden on Milan.

If we're to move in Jan I think it'll be these two positions. Doubt Doug will sanctions loans to bolster us for a play off run unless Frank wins every game between now and Jan.
