Overrated players.

Listening to a podcast on Under the Cosh, they were interviewing Mark Hateley.

I didn't realise before he join the Sky Blues he was having a trial at Nottingham forest, then one day Brian Clough called him into the his office and said, Young Man you'll never make it as a footballer go and work in a supermarket 🤣

So when Mark told his dad Tony Hateley, a legend at Liverpool, who had played for the Sky Blues, phoned Gordon Milne who also played in the same side at Liverpool with Tony Hateley and was at the time the Sky Blues manager and ask Gordon if he would give him a trial, Gordon didn't bother with a trial just signed him up immediately and the rest is history.

Just shows Brian Clough didn't get it right all the time.

Bukayo Saka when he plays for England. Looks great for Arsenal but performances for England makes him seem over rated

Dion Dublin, for me, is strangely underrated.

Villa move soured the memory for a lot of people, including myself at the time. Imagine having a player like that now - goalscorer, leader and more than capable CD?

Robbie Keane seems to have this exalted status based on 13 PL goals and never being involved in an away win.
Yeah agree with that. Unfortunately some will just not let go of the Villa nonsense stuff that will undermine just what a colossus Dublin was for us during his time here.

Left back was an area we had trouble with. Downs, Morgan, Edwards, Burrows, Sansom. We were weak there for a while
Burrows was a strange one-only had one season at West Ham and then Everton before coming to us. Them 2 clubs obviously didn’t rate him it seems.

I liked David Burrows especially after we drew 0-0 at Blackburn when Dion was wrongly sent off. Tim Sherwood tried to intimidate Burrows and was in his face but Burrows never took a step back

He definitely got on the pitch. I remember seeing us lose 4-1 at QPR in 2004. Him and Staunton both played and were shit. Sherwood just did nothing. Staunton was trying in fairness but in the end, I had to cover my eyes when he started running. So slow is was frightening.

That was the game where Sherwood was so poor, he was on a yellow card , committed another foul ,and most of our fans were shouting at the ref to send him off. He was that shite.

I certainly remember him getting a lot of richly deserved abuse. For a player of his standing, it was a shocking performance.

“Of his standing?”

IIRC he couldn’t feel his feet when standing up.

We actually gave wages to a player who could hardly stand up.

And we moan now?

As I say to the kids: “don’t know how lucky you are”.

Sound like my dad.

Louis Carey, played 300 times for Bristol City and was a legend, came to us for 20 games and was shit, went back to Bristol City and was a legend for another 300 games.
God I’d forgotten about Louis Carey. Then after that for about 5 seasons we couldn’t sign a right back so shit the bed and got Richard Duffy back on loan again 😂

Ha. Yeah, that was an odd one. He was rubbish for us.

Would of been an ideal utility player in the 98 squad , and a decent penalty taker
Dion absolutely should have been in the 98 squad - the issue I suppose was that shearer would never have been subbed off, so you’d have to be a partner for him….
The others then went arguably would have been better or already established partnerships - sheringham, Owen, Ferdinand, even Merson with his style of play.
shame.

Dion and Owen would have been a hell of a partnership IMO.

I remember him coming off the bench in his 2nd season with ( after being injured for over a year since signing)
Within 5 mins he was hobbling off with McCallister shouting dogs abuse at him at the time. He never played again.

I remember that, although we didn't help. I was in the West Terrace (don't know why as my season ticket was in the West Stand above, was it a cup game?) and when he came on, there was a chorus of "who the fkn hell are you?" I think most laughed when he went off again a couple of minutes later holding his back. He was reportedly on £17k per week and spent most of his time in the Royal Exchange at the bottom of Leamington with an Irish mate of mine who ran it at the time. I assumed that was why he never really recovered from injury, but transpired after that he had a degenerative back condition.

Edit - just Googled him and seems he only played 12 times for us in the 3 years we had him.

Thought Burrows did all right for us. Solid.

After watching his predecessors like Steve Morgan, Paul Edwards, and Kenny Sansom, he was a clear upgrade. Although to be fair to Sansom, he was 33 when he joined us, and his best years were behind him.

Out of all those early Big Ron signings I had more problems with Kevin Richardson. He made Sammy Clingan look like a progressive midfielder. Square ball, square ball. Even playing with Gary Mac didn’t make him any better.

Funny that Big Ron spent all that dosh, and we ended up in a worse position than under Phil Neal who couldn’t buy anyone.

Mike Marsh, Liam Daish, John Salako, Paul Telfer, Paul Williams, Richard Shaw, Kevin Richardson, Eoin Jess, Marc Edworthy…We must have spunked £15-20 million on that lot.

Agree with most of what you said, but not sure it was anything like that much value. I'd reckon £10m. Eoin Jess the most expensive of those at £2m. Richardson was only something like £300k. Weirdly I remember stuff like that from back then, but ask me about recent seasons and I'm clueless.

Big Ron spent a lot of money for the time and did sweet FA. Even Spitting Image took the piss out of him when he was at Man U. How much do you want for your centre forward? £1million. I'll give you £2 million.

Fat Ron was as bad a manager as we had in the top division. Utter dross.

Not over-rated by us, but came with (for me) big expectations - Mike Marsh and Steve Staunton. Relatively big names at the time who were actually very bland.
