Who are the most underrated players during their time here, who went onto better things than they were given credit for than when here?
The latter Steve Sedgley.

And the obvious one: Craig Bellamy. He was a very good (if not likeable) player bought at the wrong time.

would you of said he was worthy of being britains most expensive defender at the time ? I wouldn’t, perfect example of over rated
He was the hottest property at the time. Versatile, fast, strong. On top of 2 really good seasons for us, he looked good at USA ‘94 too. (Even if Ireland were poor). I can understand why he cost so much. Not sure why it didn’t work for him at Liverpool. They woukd be justified in calling him over-rated. But his partnership with Atherton is one of our best ever CB pairings IMO

Babb was a proper classy defender

Over-rated Craig Bellamy (including by himself)

Biggest disappointment (apart from many already mentioned) would be Paul Cook. Was touted for years as the player we needed in midfield. Wolves would never sell (or quoted us a fuck-off price). Then we get Chris Marsden who was mint but left us for Wolves, which in turn, saw Cook lose his place and finally join us. Only to be massively underwhelming. I do remember him doing one unbelievable cross field switch pass from the left back position. He hit it like a shot and it landed on a sixpence in front of Telfer I think.

Paul Culpin. Bobby Gould had a knack of signing non league players who went on to do well in the highest league but it was a step too far for Nuneaton's Paul.

I see a lot of non league players now and the vast majority couldn't cut it in league 1 let alone the Prem

It does seem that a lot of posters on here didn't understand the OP's question!!

The most overrated for me was Richard Shaw. How a player of such limited ability played so many games for us in the PL is astonishing.

Exactly.

Konjic:
Cult hero & fans favourite because of his kamikaze dribbles but was a poor defender & spent most of his time here injured.

Oggy:
A very good goalkeeper & rightly heralded due to his longevity, but he's often hailed as our greatest ever keeper when we've had many better both before & since.

Joe Cole:
Yes it was exciting that we had a big name player when the club were in League 1, but the reality is he was miles off the pace. His only really notable contribution was the free-kick vs Barnsley & it actually disrupted our attacking output shoehorning him in.

Don’t think many actually rated Cole once he was here did they? Seemed to be consensus he was past it and not needed iirc

I'm gonna need to duck for cover here, and to an extent I'm just being provocative 😉. But was David Speedie quite as good as his legendary status suggests?

He was a very good player obviously, with some brilliant goals to show for it. But although we did well in the seasons after '87, I somehow felt the side was never quite as easy on the eye as the cup-winning team, and it felt like making Speedie the focus of everything was part of that change.

Poo emojis incoming!

One of the best players we’ve ever had I think.
Shame he seems to be an utter prat…his personality is over rated!

I personally think it’s harsh. But there’s a hint of something there. I can remember wondering why Liverpool wanted to buy him off us. He was over 30 and on the wane. Was Souness going mad? Etc….

He was as good as his legendary status suggests! We certainly wouldn't have been better by playing Houchen week in week out, or later on Drinkell.

Our main problem after the cup win was that he was our only major buy. We were crying out for a decent left back, and signing one would have had us in a much better place. I was quite surprised when Smith first got in the team the following season that we didn't move Pickering back to left back, as he had played there for Sunderland, although to be fair when he left us Pickering's career didn't really go anywhere.
