Lol - just admit that a player you don’t like did something valuable. My heart didn’t sing when Mount came on either but denying he had an impact on the game is just pig-headed.“Win the pen” is a hell of a spin to put on it. He stood there and the French defender went mental and shoved him over. Hardly comparable to Saka or even Kanes that wasn’t given.
I don’t think Southgate is mediocre.Yes. A competent manager who doesn’t stink of mediocrity
Whatever or whoever, he collects another valiant loser's medal, in the footsteps of his managerLol - just admit that a player you don’t like did something valuable. My heart didn’t sing when Mount came on either but denying he had an impact on the game is just pig-headed.
Worst manager we’ve ever had, surelyWhatever or whoever, he collects another valiant loser's medal, in the footsteps of his manager
Think it's clear we'd get one of Slippy G or LampardI don’t think Southgate is mediocre.
He’s a brilliant motivator and a poor tactician.
We’ve had managers that are brilliant tacticians and poor motivators.
We need the blend.
Ultimately if we're going on your preferred philosophy of the results count more than anything else, he simply isn't capable of managing England against top tier international sides. Tonight just as befell Bobby Robson we flapped it from the penalty spot after our best performance of the tournament against likely the eventual winners.Worst manager we’ve ever had, surely
I’d much rather stick if that was the twistThink it's clear we'd get one of Slippy G or Lampard
I don’t disagree, but I think given the horrendous record of previous managers who didn’t even manage to reach the “mediocre” heights that Our Gareth has reached, he deserves a bit more respect. I think he’s left his eventual successor with some important lessons about how to manage a team through a tournament - something that managers like Capello, Sven, Woy and others failed to do miserably.Ultimately if we're going on your preferred philosophy of the results count more than anything else, he simply isn't capable of managing England against top tier international sides. It is time for Mr Marks and Spencer to exit the stage.
100% that will not happen.I’d much rather stick if that was the twist
He also has his favourite players , which we have to also attribute again , another England manager , to their downfall .I don’t think Southgate is mediocre.

Well currently we have a very nice man who ends up leaving top tier opponents very happy indeed. But this isn’t dissimilar from who’s gone before him.I’d much rather stick if that was the twist
The Portuguese Pulis-no thanks. I’d go in for Howe and see what he thinks of joint managing the national side and his club.Pochetino if he’s not weirdly anti English.
Ibwouldnt be against a stab at Jose weirdly.

Sven lost two penalty shootouts and the third against Brazil was pretty much David Seaman’s clanger. He is of course foreign though and seemed a bit boring so he gets less of a pass than Gareth despite inheriting a total mess from Keegan.I don’t disagree, but I think given the horrendous record of previous managers who didn’t even manage to reach the “mediocre” heights that Our Gareth has reached, he deserves a bit more respect. I’m sure he is.Is he? The players don’t look motivated and he constantly talks us down. I saw very little fight from England this tournament.
While I agree with you that Maddison has got a raw deal, Southgate’s focus on continuity and togetherness has allowed a team with glaring holes to perform much better than it sometimes deserved to at tournaments. He also has his favourite players , which we have to also attribute again , another England manager , to their downfall .
Example: Maddison , based on every single metric of what is required to play for your country , has been treated dreadfully by the national team manager for more than a couple of years now
Nothing motivational there

Would you describe our recent records in tournaments as mediocre?
Sven has a pretty good rep as far as I can tell, and Southgate’s teams also got fucked over twice on penalties, so I’m not calling much of a difference between them in terms of results.Sven lost two penalty shootouts and the third against Brazil was pretty much David Seaman’s clanger. Agreed on Capello and Hodgson thought if Lampard’s goal had correctly stood against Germany, who knows how that one would’ve turned out. Then there’s Shteve who is probably best left forgotten.

Apart from the fact that sven managed in an era with more than 1 good international team ?Sven has a pretty good rep as far as I can tell, and Southgate’s teams also got fucked over twice on penalties, so I’m not calling much of a difference between them in terms of results.
You just put him in the same bracket as Hodgson.Sven has a pretty good rep as far as I can tell, and Southgate’s teams also got fucked over twice on penalties, so I’m not calling much of a difference between them in terms of results.
What?! Alex Ferguson is a managerial legend who built a true dynasty; Southgate is a limited coach who’s nevertheless taken a flawed England team to their best tournament showing in decades. I’ve never said the man’s a genius, but I do think the backlash against him is hysterical and unfair. At this point , Southgate to you , is what Alex ferguson is to manchester united fans .
I don't understand people like you and never will
No disrespect, he's failed
I think Neville is covering his arse there. We had a pretty strong side during his time. You can’t really compare any way. As Neville said today this team has the players to go toe to toe with the top sides and his never did. You judge a manager by whether they get the team performing above the sum of their parts and Southgate doesn’t.

Southgate absolutely got the team performing above their station in 2018 and 2021 imo. For a team with crap CBs and middling DMs to reach the semi-final/final was an achievement. You can’t really compare any way. We played almost all the games at home and were tournament favourites for most of itSouthgate absolutely got the team performing above their station in 2018 and 2021 imo. For a team with crap CBs and middling DMs to reach the semi-final/final was an achievement.
