'Series of hotels' to be built at Ricoh Arena (1 Viewer)

I know that - the problem is that it's quite difficult to find out when these major events are on, because they're not very major.

So in other words, you haven't really done the research.

As I recall there's been talk about a shortage of hotel rooms at the Ricoh for ages - long before all the hassle with the club broke out. And yet on the back of a fagpacket and a whole ten minutes research you and a few others here are willing to discount it.

It might, I suppose, all be a bit of a blag by the council - but the fact that it's been under discussion for so long suggests to me that it might happen. And if it does, so what?

It doesn't affect the ability of the club to return to the Ricoh - unless the only way for that to happen is for SISU to break ACL. So unless that's what you want, why worry.

Try booking 200 rooms for a conference

I don't get your point?

If you were booking 200 rooms for a conference you'd probably be booking the conference as well. In which case, you'd look at venues that could host 200 people and the hotels around that venue (or in/on it). With the global recession, conferences (and other meetings/events) took a hit but before that, you'd be looking at a 6-18 month booking window. Now it can be 3-6 months but you'd do it in plenty of time when availability isn't an issue (unless it's over a black out date...such as Goodwood FoS or Southampton Boat Show).

Booking windows for corporates tend to be 7 days or less (although some do book further out).

I'm glad you mentioned Goodwood FoS. One of the hotels I look after is one of the closest 4star hotels in the area...we could sell the hotel 5 times over on those dates. We still fill on Tuesdays and Wednesdays regularly, even though we're in rural West Sussex.

For FoS, pretty every hotel on the South Coast between Brighton and Southampton (and as far North as Guildford) are full (with reservations anyway).

I agree its an absolute nightmare and we ended up reserving some crappy caravans but the point here is there is a huge misconception. If there is a prestigious event on then any customers stopping over will stop in decent accommodation. So if its at the Ricoh customers or corporate clients will stay in Stratford. Hosts will never be allowed to stop in such accommodation anyway as agencies get limited budgets. They will go anywhere. They also get seperated. So this while thread is built on ignorance and misconception as to how the events business operates.

Guy from TPA on CWR said councils have no reason to build hotels or own stadiums.

Look....I think a combination of common sense + the abundance of real-time evidence gathered by Grendel here (too much time on your hands mate) pretty much proves that a "Series of hotels" on the outskirts of the city next to a Tesco & an empty stadium is a shit idea....

...Yes, there are always exceptions.....you know...the one night per decade Bruce Springsteen arrives in town....guess what....their may be a higher demand for rooms...

...but for Le*cester U21 games, mystic fucking meg or some tin-pot trade show about kitchen worktops.....I can't see them queueing off the M6...can you.

I almost fell off my chair with laughter at this post :)

At the end of 25 pages and having read the Tweets regarding the Council budget earlier on this afternoon I can't see the need for more hotels around that area, as Grendel has pointed out not every hotel is not booked up, but rightly Grendel an Weeman have indicated that at peak times the local area may struggle which is justifiable.

The issue currently is there aren't enough high profile events happening at the Ricoh IMO to warrant a new Hotel from what I can see on there calendar, although I am tempted to pop along to Psychic Sally and ask her when CCFC is likely to return to the Ricoh and if this Forum will ever return to normality.

It's not about demand as such. Hotels will always be busy and if conferences increase etc then why not?

A hotel is new likely than a new stadium that's go sure.

More likely I meant. Also who is to say they can't build other stuff on it? Hotel may just be the start. As I say the council hold all the cards. They don't need ccfc as being shown though not proved but ccfc need the Ricoh as 1500 Cov fans prove this. That's the difference

Why would some people be bothered about "an ugly lump of concretein Holbrooks"and argue that extra hotel rooms are not needed and will never be filled? I prefer to listen to the wise words of Mr Tim Fisher who at one of the forums in the summer said something like build it and they will come, and who am I to argue with a man that is saving me money?:D

That's odd. I come to work in Coventry every week and know a number of others who work here who do the same. Only once has a shortage come to light and that was when the university held its graduation ceremony.

To be honest mate it happens quite a bit because we have people from head office coming down to the Midlands and can never get a room in Cov if there is something big on at the NEC, same in Kenilworth, Leamington and Warwick. I remember doing a survey in a guest house in Kenilworth a few years ago and the women owner bored me to tears with a list of all the events and how busy it gets in and around Cov.

He said Councils should concentrate on their core services. Building hotels and owning stadiums puts CT money at risk.

Imagine the football club were at the Ricoh, or imagine they never moved from Highfield Road. I guarantee that the majority of people defending the building of Hotels around such a complex would all think it was a ridiculous idea.

Highfield Road then yes, The Ricoh Arena then no. Highfield Road was a football stadium and the Ricoh Arena is a multi purpose events stadium so makes sense. One final note, I would take the largest eyesore of a hotel in the world outside the Ricoh at the minute just as long as we were playing there. Who cares what's outside? we used to walk past some of the ugliest hookers in the world on the way to Highfield Road but it's all about what's in there.

Multi purpose? Is Sally a gymnast as well as a fortune teller?

So aside from CCFC playing there once upon a time, Sally is the only other event to be held at the Ricoh. At least we now know that along with Thorn, you stalk her aswell. Why don't you grow up instead of trying to continually make cheap jibes. It wouldn't be as bad if they were amusing but they are shit. Find some other material because you are way beyond boring now.

I think you're missing the point mate, politely. The idea is that more hotel space around the Ricoh enables it to draw in more exhibitions.

More accomodation on site, more exhibitions, more money. (More jobs too).

File under "right-wing think tank condemns council spending shocker".

Until CCFC screwed themselves into a cocked hat I don't remember the Council ever wanting to build a stadium. I don't think they're exactly going into the hotel business either, more like trying to push along a development they see as for the good of the City as a whole.

Whether they should do this or not is up for debate, no doubt, but I'm not much minded to take on board the TPA's opinion as the sole arbiter in this.

Maybe if they were coming at it from the perspective of "it's a council idea and therefore crap", yes.

Building a hotel or two at the Ricoh, or indeed at HR, wouldn't bother me at all. It doesn't impact in any way my ability to enjoy football there, and in fact if there were a few more decent bars at the Ricoh as a result I'd be all for it (assuming the club gets back there, if not I don't much care either way, frankly).

Isn't that the point? More hotels around the Ricoh would help in getting those events in. It may well be the case that you can split people over 20 hotels in the area and bus them in as Grendal says but doesn't that give an advantage to a venue that can say you don't have to do that, we have enough hotel rooms on site.

OK, where are we...

Personal views I guess ;)

Firstly, don't care if the council build hotels there. Why not? It's their land, and if it's such a great deal they should have done it long ago. This is a perfectly reasonable thing to do if it's a surefire winner.

Why don't I care? Because a football club should be about football first and foremost. Owners want to build some hotels? Nothing stopping them doing so either, but I want my football club focussed on football, where a football stadium is central and the priority to the club. Am sick of prospective owners of the club being sold potential land development deals, sick of our owners talking about revenue streams... sick of the talk being of other things than OUR FOOTBALL CLUB.

And in that respect, the quote from the councillor about the club being a sideshow... says all we need to know about what little care anybody with the means and power to influence things cares about our club.

It explains why Fletcher had to put the CCFC crest up on the side by himself one night.

It explains why the Ricoh is not home, even if we play there. The club's just a sideshow, has no respect... never has.

Pathetic, all of them. It just shows none of them care about a football club, none of them see beyond the financial. By all means build hotels on land you own if they're profitable, that should frankly have been done long ago.

But never, NEVER call my club a sideshow. Culture and heritage clearly unimportant, neither our governers nor our owners deserve a football club in their midst.

Why are you bothered if they build a hotel there? Seriously.

Were you outside clapping when Frankie and Bennies opened?

There is a Frankie and Bennies at the Ricoh? hadn't realised that, that is good news (well if we ever get our club back) I do like going for something to eat after the football and more variety than pizza hut is nice. Not that Frankie and Bennies is my first choice place to eat but more choices is good.

Sorry mate, not trying to catch you out, but I'm reasonably certain that SISU wanted to buy out the whole thing for themselves for around £6m - £7m. Hence presenting ACL as distressed.

In fairness, I'm too busy atm to dig it out myself, but if I can find it later I'll come back to you.

Didn't the council get an independent evaluation of the Ricoh before remortgaging and the value, based on the club there paying £500k rent per year came out at £6.5m for the whole lot?????

If that is what the council valued it, how much do you expect SISU to pay for the Ricoh with no football team there???

I think that's more likely to be a valuation of ACL, the business holding the lease, at the point that SISU weren't paying any rent, rather than a valuation of the entire Ricoh (costing £118m to build with a decent slab of land for development).

How much are SISU planning to spend on the new 12,000 seat arena?

The valuation was for ACL not the Ricoh freehold in any guise. 2 completely different things.
