Part of the new selection process is on personality and attitude. If he's got a bad attitude we won't be signing him.
Everything I've heard about Jay Stansfield would imply he's a good lad. He is the son of an Exeter City legend Adam Stansfield and is very much idolised there - he returned there on loan from Fulham. Exeter are a really great family run club with the right ideals.

All that said - absolutely no way a player like him would move to a Championship club without a prospect of playing almost every game - this makes no sense for Coventry or Stansfield.

Agree with this. I think signing another decent striker could prove really difficult. Even without the fact they will likely cost decent money, I'm not sure we are that attractive for a striker at the minute given that we have two big money strikers who will likely start ahead of them.

I expect we might have to target the foreign market.

We might get someone young and cocky given the high likelihood of Simms/Wright moving on next season if we don't go up. But you do have to look at the amount of money we would have to spend, the amount of playing time we can offer and ask if we are really going to do better than Tavares/Obukwu.

Possibly a prem loan where he won’t have the pressure of being the main source of goals but will still get a good amount of mins. Will lankshear from Spurs would be nice.

I think we have a much greater chance of securing of foreign player with potential who wants a crack at the English market than a Premier League loan. Which premier club in their right mind sends a talented young striker to play 3rd fiddle as a sub and to a manager who is proven to be cautious in making subs.

I wonder if a deeper squad, and an ability to change up systems mid-match as a result, will change how MR uses the bench.

I knew someone connected to Exeter who told me Stansfield's wages whilst he was on loan there from Fulham (obviously what Fulham were paying him, not Exeter). Although I can't remember exactly (I have a number in my head but not confident, so don't want to get it wrong), they were very high - and this was two years ago. It was too rich for most Championship clubs blood.
Can't imagine he'd be happy taking a pay cut when there will be decent loan offers on the table. I just can't see him going to Brum.

Edit: I'm sure someone less lazy than me will probably look them up somewhere, but even then - I usually don't believe what is online.

Someone on Twiter saying Ike Ugbo was at Ryton today. Most likely BS but worth posting for the evenings entertainment

After the amount of comments on the Dovin thread the rumor mill has gone quiet lol I need something new haha Ugbo is a decent striker and would give us pace up front (is that is true he was at Ryton) I know he did well at Wednesday and scored some vital goals for them

Could only see Stansfield if Viktor leaves for the additional funds, if not too rich for our blood also question marks over game time. Ike Ugbo more realistic for game time and would offer us something different for a cheaper cost. Would like ike.

He was at Chelsea as a youth player, and probably knows half our squad, so I'd say the rumour is almost definitely a goer even if AV has left the building.

Think he signed a new deal before going to Blues on loan and would imagine he’d want even more to drop down to L1 with them. Won’t come cheap

The short answer to your rhetorical question is: yes!

Tavares barely plays as a striker for us and Obikwu has experience playing in L2 only. We’ll need another striker for sure. It does not serve either player’s development to be a bit part player in our setup because we can’t trust them to perform. Both players are raw.

We need players to be pushing on the starters all the way. Tavares and Obikwu just aren’t pushing Wright, Simms, EMC and Sakamoto for a starting berth. Imagine a scenario where Simms or Wright gets injured and there’s no cover for them - it would be negligent.

It wasn't rhetorical - although it also wasn't directed at us - more hypothetical for Robins etc who will have more of an idea what budgets are like, who is willing to come, where Tavares is at, Obikwu's ceiling and whether a loan would be best for him.

That wasn't really the crux of the message tbh. It was a reply to another message saying that strikers will be put off by Wright and Simms. Realistically the only way they are both with us next season is if we are a premier league team so some players might figure they can get a few minutes this season and establish themselves next.

You are living things out in an ideal world. The competition you are trying to create is easier said than done.

However bad luck with injuries is a reality; but they could hit any section of the squad..

Nope, this is a pragmatic consideration of the state of our team and the development of younger players.

Robins will not go into this season without a 3rd senior striker. Why else would let Godden go? Even now, Godden would be a better option than both Tavares and Obikwu.

Simms and Wright are both starters. Logistically, if no senior striker is brought in, one of those players will need to play 90m every game for 48+ games. That just isn’t feasible and if last season didn’t demonstrate the importance of squad depth, nothing will.

Sakamoto being our only RW and how his injury impacted the team and tactics is a great example of my point. Striker is the one position where you can’t afford to be short on quality and numbers.

I’d be stunned if we weren’t actively working on another striker.

I'm hoping a new coaching team may help with the way we use subs

Subs is only a managers decision based on how a game is going. Can't see how coaching staff can affect match subs during the working week.

Well apart from making them better.

Robins was crystal clear throughout last season on the need to add both quantity and quality to the team. He also made the point that our squad depth (2023/24) was ‘net’ 3 players short of the 2022/23 season (it was 3 or 4 in the original quote before we brought in Torp).

Accounting for our transfer business this summer to date, we’re still 2 players short of the 22/23 season’s squad depth. We won’t be anywhere near finished with our transfer business yet and will bring in 3-4 players. That’s without any outgoings too.

Obikwu scored 3 in 16 games in L2 last season. Bearing in mind McNulty’s L2 record for us and his career with Reading… How anyone can think this player is ready to deputise Wright and Simms is genuinely beyond me. He’s a good prospect but needs to development and not to be chucked in at the deep end.

If we want to go for autos or anything like top four, we need another five I reckon. The ones everyone has mentioned CM ST CB RB LB. And the CM CB and LB would need to be improvements on what we’ve got in the first team.

I’m not sure that amount of money is available. But we have been linked with all of those positions this summer so who knows.

We won’t bring in a LB without one leaving, which is unlikely.

And similarly bringing in a CB and RB would make Lati completely redundant so I don’t see it happening.

I am expecting a striker to come in, probably a centre midfielder and then maybe one other but I think it will be 3 more maximum.

Tavares was starting ahead of and more effective than Godden tail end of last season (noting not always in Godden's preferred position), hence it was time to go. Obikwu recently turned 20. Kane flopped at Leicester in the championship at the same age. A year later he won the golden boot. Obviously I'm not saying Obikwu = Kane, I'm just saying that stats aren't everything, players can progress quickly at that age and I'm happy to leave the pros to make the decision on what is best for his development and the team.

I can see where people are coming from on us needing a striker. 1 injury makes the options from the subs bench look a bit light. But we do currently have Simms, Wright, EMC, Tavares, Dausch and Obikwu that can all play up front. Even the best teams have to make do sometimes. I'm pretty relaxed about Andrews getting some minutes here or there, Dasilva playing left wing one game, Eccles at right back - just got to find a way to win.

So, I'm expecting maybe a couple more. I'm not entirely convinced with the balance of the midfield atm so maybe a big buy there could improve us but if we start the season as we are I am happy. We might want to save a few pence for January too.

We still have lots to do but the squad is not in a bad place as of now. And as we go into next 3 weeks we will see how we are shaping up. We could be still evaluating some and could be waiting for potential sales of Gus and Vik to determine what list of players we target. Or we are in talks with players that need to make decisions on offers.

We do have some depth of championship quality and we will need that throughout the season. We also need Burroughs and Rodriguez to make strides into becoming a legitimate starter which will bring obvious value.

Going to be a busy few weeks and going to be interesting to see who stays, who goes and who gets brought in.

What about Ryan Hardie as a back up striker, from Plymouth, scored goals in a poor side, fairly cheap, bridges the gap between the likes of Tavares and Simms, and probably wouldn't mind playing second fiddle.
