I think the loss of O Hare has had far more impact on how we play
Certainly has had an impact, nobody in their right mind would deny that.

Doesn't have to be the only impact however.

It was from someone not a rugby fan who said a local benefactor paid for it - the arrangement was supposed to be 50 50 - wasps didn’t stump up so he paid

I assume he’s referring to Overson

Again must be true ;)

Well it would make some sense

We did finally admit there was nothing in our lease that explicitly referred to pitch repairs

I can’t actually see where we’d have found the funds

Tell that to the clubs throwing tens of millions to try and get to the Prem and failing.

Always this argument “We either atrophy as a club and spend nothing, while we have a manager whonactually gets returns on investment. Or we have to spend tens of millions and go bust”

May I remind you we went bust not so long ago and apparently are in tens of millions of debt anyway. So frankly really not sure spending nothing is the great solution it’s claimed to be.

If somebody had said before the window the only real outgoing is Hyam for £1.5m then people would have loved it.

What? Who? Everyone knew we needed to sell big to rebuild this summer. And even people like me who don’t rate Hyam would rate him higher than that for an established Championship club. I wouldn’t have guessed Blackburn would be in for him but once they were clearly his value was at least double that.

Would I want us to be like Derby, no. Would I want us to be like Luton, yes. Seems like they don’t view 12th in the second tier as the limit and have improved every year since 2018

Exactly. Though TBF Luton’s finances are very similar to ours if you take our their recent big sales.

This summer was the test. Has Boddy got the nous to maximise commercial value and transfer value at this level?

I think we can all see that answer now.

More than tens of millions of quid, we need someone who can keep the ship running and maximise our value.

We've conceded 1 goal in 5 and a half games.

It's hard to see who you'd drop in the current back 3 for him. Doyle/Rose maybe but Fadz and Panzo would be ahead of him.

I think you could see a return on freeing up wages of well paid peripheral players, and some on a hefty whack and replacing for a larger competitive squad which raises the overall level of playing strength.

The whole is definitely different from the sum of it parts.

Could you imagine them openly saying mid table is the limit and the league is too expensive for us to stay? What is really needed is someone to provide the capital to let us speculate to accumulate. And that isn’t £20 million, it’s more like 3 or 4 with returns to be made within a few years.

Thats what I’m saying though. A decent chairman this summer would have shifted some of the deadwood and maximised out sales. Instead we’re bringing people in from the cold cos we have to and selling cut price last minute.

That alone could add your £3-4m to the budget. Along with an improved commercial team.

We’ve been lucky that none of the CBs have had a major injury - I think Rose missed 1 game. 1 injury and we are down to bare bones. It’s not the sale of Hyam necessarily it’s the fact we didn’t replace him

Because the managers spunk it up the wall. Last season we were in a play off hunt, the squad needed reinforcing in a few positions. We decided to bung a few players off to bring in a left back, then we fell away.

We never got rid of anyone who could have enhanced a play off push, only adding Bidwell was was the issue

Where does the role of the manager / recruitment come into it for signing the deadwood and bombing them off within a couple of months?

We are still paying Hilßner.

Blackburn have played 2 games more than a lot of teams and could be out of the top 6 once teams catch up. As of now they have played 5 games more than us.

And if you look at our record with We have improved every year. Luton are effectively 12 months in front of us.
For those panicking we play 46 matches in a season. If we win our games in hand against Luton’s record we are 2 points behind them. Likewise Blackburn.
Just a short while ago Luton we’re 23rd in the league. They’ve been in a run we can also do that.

If we do better than 12th this season I'll be stunned

The flak he got on here before he left and the praise he’s now receiving are a brilliant example of cognitive dissonance

Also how we ignore evidence that doesn’t fit our prejudice and find evidence that does

And yes before @Grendel says none of us are immune as Mr Burge will attest

I would Pete, take a look at my post history on dom , rate him quite highly

Liked Hyam and didn’t want him to go but it’s not the sale of Hyam that’s the shame really, it was not getting a replacement.
Appreciate his services but we’ve lost better players and the defence is looking better.

With age and contracts dwindling we need to plan ahead though and that requires investment from the owners.

Our transfer budget doesn’t allow us to sign ready made players, they’re not all going to come off. Which again is why you need to be able to ship them out quickly.

Agreed. Even so, in life we can’t expect to get everything right!

I always reference Fergie, one of if not the greatest manager in top flight history. He made some absolute shite signings over the years.

As long as the club has an identity, a formation and way of playing, sign players who fit that and make more good than bad, you’ll do well.

I would agree with this.

I think the higher up in the pyramid we go, the more we go into unknown territory. There is a learning curve to all of this. For example, the profitability of signings and the natural cycle of players through the club. This isn't championship manager or whatever game you can get on a computer, I would imagine.

Things are not going to always work out how you perceive them to work. It's those which best adapt to their surroundings and have a willingness to learn when thing don't go as expected will have the best chance of success. Rigidity of thinking is always the enemy.

I think it is only natural to expect a few steps backwards, if in case this has happened, would need to be expected, if you want to keep moving forward up the pyramid.

It isn't easy to ship a Championship paid player out to a League 2 club.

Ship em somewhere else then?

There was always going to be turnover if we stayed up, that’s why you budget for it. Whatever excuses you want to give it’s poor planning to need to sell assets cheap because you’re time limited.

One thing that seems certain is whatever league we're in next season the squad will look very, very different.

You can't shift the dead wood if no one is prepared to buy them or take on their contracts.

Hilsner and Da Costa signed for us in the Championship. As did Kane who we were trying to get rid of.

You then need people willing to take them.

We were time limited to get the pitch fixed to be able to play games because Wasps were going bust and couldn't do it.

Hmmm…

The point stands, what’s the point of the owners if they can’t smooth over short term cash flows without holding a fire sale.

The only realistic way off offloading Hilsner and Da Costa was to pay off their contracts. This wasn't going to happen at a time when we had well documented cash flow issues at the start of the season through the cancellation of home games, that also precipitated the sale of Hyam. Nobody was going to take either player off us. Hilsner is injured anyhow and sending Da Costa to Shrewsbury who might pay a part of his salary is as good as we can realistically hope for.

I wasn’t the one that brought those two up. I’m more concerned with the likes of Waghorn Walker and Kane who are all on a wedge and can do a job lower down this division or in L1. And of course Hyam who was worth a lot more than £1.5m
