Its worked once with Hamer right? Surely its 1 success and 1 resounding flop if you consider Kastaneer.

Twice, we signed George Boateng from that league albeit over twenty years ago.

At the end of last season I was thanking Fadz for his service and shipping him out. He was probably our best player in the first half of this season. Despite that, I’m shipping him out again! He can’t be that good next season can he?!

I was also saying farewell to Hyam who has stepped up a notch this season. Proves I’m not the best judge!

Vik is great for us at our level. His finishing needs to improve if he wants to compete higher up the food chain, but he’s still got 16 goals.

I think Gus is the one player we’ve got the least chance of holding onto. Hurts to say, but he’s probably too good for us. Genuinely think he can play at a higher level now.

COH, Sheaf and Vik are amazing, but won’t be at Premiership level for 12-18 months at best. I know talk of Premiership is optimistic, but teams buying our best players will be expecting playoffs at least in the hope of Premiership.
Think Sheaf will make it if he gets his head down. COH is still arguably our most important player (and my favourite) but not 100% convinced he’ll be above a top 6 Championship player yet.

Regardless of all this, every club will be making contingency plans. Whether we sell none, one or all of the above - we’ll have been looking at replacements for some time by now. Just need to get lucky!

MR in the past has signed and then extended the majority of his players in hope they can compete at the level we were at. Or hope he has time to improve an inexperienced individual to step up to another level. All this while maintaining the clubs budget, which has never been top end at any level we been at. I think now for the 1st time he has an opportunity to look at players that have played higher or at least championship football to improve the group. This is because a nucleus of our current squad has shown and gained experience of being able to compete at the top of the championship over a season. This summer will still be budget driven, but he knows the quality of player now has to be higher or equal to what he already has. He can't gamble on development player or an inexperienced foreign player, his aim is to better the squad with the ability to improve all to fight for a 1st team starting spot every week. He has a nucleus of about 15 players that compete at the top end of this league on a weekly basis. We need to add more quality and push our younger players to be the depth, but I'm sure he knows where and who can get us to the next level. It takes time to build a squad of quality with depth, especially on the way up the leagues probably faster than planned. It also takes patience and understanding that during that time you lose players along the way. Sometimes its due to player being to big for the club, in other cases the club becomes to big for the player. Its a sign of progression whichever way it goes, for those left behind it's because we improved and those sold for profit a chance to improve the group with a fee reinvested. Sentiment is left at the exit door when you want to hit your target, I'm sure MR makes decisions on the greater good of the club and will fight when a decision would hurt the clubs progression.

One thing I'm sure of is MR and AV are creating a culture and are building a very positive reputation about what the club is about and what they intend it to be. The fan base is growing and the media is picking up on what is becoming a very good story in a business of poorly structured clubs. We are getting a good football reputation and I honestly think football fans around the country genuinely are fond of our club ànd know it as a good club worthy of a place at the top table. MR wants better facilities to attract a higher quality of player and to improve our current players. He wants promotion, to manage at the highest level and to see the fans who have stuck by the club get rewarded for getting dragged through football hell over the last few years.

If he can get the quality he wants as well as keep the nucleus together, I think we are really close to being a very hard team/club to stop. He will make mistakes with players and every year will need to look and gamble on certain players from lower levels, academies to our own that we develop into top players for depth in our 1st team. But looking over the last 5 years I don't think he would change much or change decisions he has made. He is building a club from being on it's arse to finger tips away from championship play offs. He is making us relevant again which from where we were is a minor miracle, and it's all based on good football, developing players and creating a togetherness within the club I have not seen since 87.

Let's hope the owners push to help a little more with the budget. And he gets at least 10 wages out the door to add the quality he needs to take the next step. To finish off the season with a few more wins would also be nice to cement a top 10 finish.

get shot of bidwell hahaha, we only signed him in January on a 3 year deal and he hasnt even been that bad
Did you read what I wrote? I said get shot if we get an offer. There are better players about and he certainly hasn't tore the place up and he is past improvement.

Bidwell has been excellent the last few matches, arguably our best player in some of them. Some players take a while to settle into a new team and he took a few matches to do so. Kane was the same. I would have thought Bidwell would be one of the least likely players to go in the summer.

Ideal world (as in not the real world) I’d like to see us bring in:

Young GK to push Moore and ultimately take over
3 x CB (A big defensive leader maybe more experienced. Two with more pace and quality on the ball, probably younger maybe a gamble from a lower league or a Prem loan)
LWB (Young, attacking, pacy)
CM (Hamer understudy)
DM (Challenge for Sheaf but more defensive)
AM (Goal scoring and capable of playing with or instead of O’Hare)
ST x 2 (One big and able to stand in for Györkeres and one quick)

Give a 25 man squad of:

Moore/GK
CB/Hyam
CB/Fadz
CB/Rose
Dabo/Kane
LWB/Bidwell
Hamer/CM
Sheaf/DM
O’Hare/AM
Györkeres/ST
ST/Godden

Eccles/Allen/Tavares

Not going to have anything like that budget, or keep everyone, or ship out all that dead wood, but that’s what I think an ideal squad would look like.
Can see a young centre half coming in probably on loan from premiership , signing attacking midfielder and a young striker that has performed in championship already
Can see us probably having to sell one of the three “star” players , my guess would be Hamer

can see 7/8 going out on loan at least to recoup some of salaries to enable spend on new players

Dion Sanderson would be my choice at CB, looked excellent when we played Blues at home.

'Can see 7/8 going out on loan at least to recoup some of salaries to enable spend on new players' - ha ha ha this is fantasy. There is limited market for our cast offs. As we have seen year in year out. An when they do go out, they rarely seem to play. Name the last time we gained from having a player loaned our. And don't say Eccles. There are too many better options for lower league clubs. Premiership clubs have loads of players. Any loan out is a bonus.

We managed to loan out Hillsner and Da Costa, so just because you say there isn’t a market for our cast offs the facts prove your point wrong already

You have to have a squad though loaning out 7/8 players means you probably have to sign and loan in similar amount

If we sell Hamer, we'll need to sign a CM too

Hamer + eight more players out the door just to sign three players?! Are we going to play rush goalie next season as well?

Don’t we gain every time a player is loaned out by having part of their wages paid enabling the club to re use

Walker being loaned out enabled the club to bring in Bidwell , is that not where we have gained from a player being loaned

I’m not talking about the younger players that we have loaned before for the players development Drysdale,Burroughs’s ,Eccles etc but those players that MR doesn’t think will feature in his plans

I think this will be the first time we will have players we can loan out on substantial wages and reuse
Waghorn
Walker
Jones
Hilsner
De costa
Perhaps a couple of others where MR thinks he can loan out and bring in better players

When you say 7-8 loaned out, is that excluding those like Pask, Shipley, etc being released?

So the squad next season will be smaller than it currently is?

We don’t have a small squad overall in my opinion. Players like Hilssner, Dacosta, Jones, Pask, Reid generally haven’t got near the pitch this season. Then you’ve got Shipley, Walker and Waghorn who when they’ve got near the pitch have been substandard. There’s 8 players that if you swapped with 4 at the required quality would see a huge improvement without damaging our depth (so to speak).

Think we should mostly pick up proven championship free agents, with the odd Hamer esque transfer that may or may not play out. High risk high reward.

To that squad I reckon you can add Eccles, whom would definitely feature more, and prospects such as Tavares, Howley etc that will develop.
I think you’re right. 4 quality signings, and retain our top players, would be very interesting next season.

You remember us playing one up front because we’ve got no one else, blooding kids who are nowhere ready, putting two keepers on the bench, making no subs and injuring players because we are using the bench as a nursery and having our squad fall down the league because they’ve played more minutes than anyone else in the division I assume?
