At the minute, Mainoo isn't disciplined enough to play against top quality sides, like you say he is very forward thinking, so in qualifying he will boss it. He pressed too high, leaving Rice to cover too much ground. The gap between the midfield and the defence was too big at times and Olmo had lots of space to play in particular in the first half. Everyone will say Rice played poorly but defensively for most of the tournament he's had to do two players work in there. Mainoo will absolutely boss it in qualifying.
Maybe Southgate should have thought about playing a right back who can’t defend and who would be completely out of position there for the first couple of games and seen how we’d get on?

Which other countries have half a dozen players as good as Bellingham and Foden?

You're correct that we have had great squads before, but I would argue that at the time the many of the other big nations were much stronger than they are now.

Depends on whether you are judging them at club or international level I guess. Let’s be clear the manager has to take a huge amount of blame but he doesn’t. 1/ misplace passes 2/ show poor close control. There is a technical gap between British and continental footballers and always has been

No but he shows blind loyalty for years to players like Phillips who have blocked the space for better players to get game time, picked an unfit bloke upfront and overplayed a tired player in Bellingham.

He is a manager who has had a team handed to him and the easiest draws possible and failed every time, if I was at the fa I would have let him do the interviews last night and sacked him straight after (not true if I had been there he wouldn’t have taken the team to Germany)

And finally once again

Jude bellingham is as much a number 10 as trent Alexander Arnold is a number 8 or 6 ..

Cheers 👍

He's one player I don't doubt goes into nearly every team ever.

I think busquets keeps him out of the Spain team back then , although I really really do rate him so it's not a dig on his behalf just that busquets was sublime , although I'd argue slightly different players

All Opinion though

Rodri is the world's best at what he does now , a great player

We had the La Liga PotS, Bundesliga top scorer, PL PotS. I’m not sure I buy the “English players are uniquely crap compared to literally every other country” stuff.
No one is saying they are crap but the argument often used that they play far better for clubs is not always that much of an argument

Kyle Walker played 50 games for Man City and has looked woeful in this tournament - he was out of position for both goals and would not be picked by the other top international teams. Other than Stones we have very few quality defenders.

You think kyle Walker, who is picked week in week out by pep guardiola , wouldn't get into many top international teams ? Lol

Good one

Nations League is back in September. Ireland, Greece and Finland. Nothing will be learned from that. If we were in the top group at least we would be competing against teams that we aspire to be.

Amazing how many are prepared to back an utterly wank football manager over very good footballers who are being held back by said wank football manager

And yet it was only after he went off that they took one minute to score!

Yeah Walker is easily in the top 3 right backs in the world

He is , and then we have trent who would flourish in that Spanish team btw .. who can deliver a perfect pass but NEVER gets minutes.

It’s no wonder the players all want Southgate to stay on. Can play as shit as they like and get a complete free pass.

All the players fault yea ?

7 matches Played fucking dire in all but 45 minutes , nothing to do with the manager no ?

Who said it was all the players fault? And who said it was nothing to do with the manager? Where in my post is any of that said?

Clearly the manager takes the majority of the blame for the performances but absolving the players of any blame is ridiculous. Far too many of our supposed world class players come out of this tournament with zero credit.

No worries mate, sorry if I was a bit hostile with my response as well 👍

It’s time for Southgate to go, but those players definitely need to take some responsibility for their own performances. The only ones who come out of the tournament looking ok are Pickford, Guehi, Stones, Mainoo and the bench players. Bellingham, Kane, Walker, Rice and Foden especially had horrendous tournaments.

I know I harp on but I genuinely believe that they struggle to play the way Gareth wants them too

Southgate defining moment in the tournament was just before Spain scored the winner when the BBC commentator said:

We have Connor Gallagher and Kieren Tripper getting ready to come on....

Don't want another few years of that negativity when we should have been the team to go on and win the game!

In his defence Gallagher would have made sense as Spain were strolling through our midfield at will. It just took him too long to do it as usual.

And I think Eddie howe is the obvious choice , a nice guy who seems to be able to get his teams playing nice attacking football , will be good in the dressing room too and will keep the squad harmony .

Will cost the FA though

I worry a bit about Graham Potter , but he's out of work and probably the obvious choice should Gareth leave

I absolutely do not want to see Lee carsley managing our national team

The player that I actually like more since the tournament and will admit I've had reservations about is pickford .. arguably our most reliable player
His shot stopping was great, nearly everything dealt with that he could realistically (Xavi Simon’s goal aside, can see how that goes through his hand just through sheer power and surprise). Even his punching, which I usually abhor from keepers, was well timed and well judged.

It’s just the long kicking that bothers me, I know Spain press well and we struggled to pass out, but whoever is telling him to go long repeatedly wants sacking. That can work if you’ve got good physicality up front, we had none for most of the game. We have players who at club level can play through a good press, we just invited Spain on to us over and over again.

I don’t understand the calls for Potter. Couldn't handle the pressure at Chelsea so I can't see him handling being England manager. Brighton improved when he left.

Howe is pretty uninspiring too.

The need to go all out and get Klopp - or guardiola, Pep’s contract is up next may. Could easily have an interim until Pep comes in.

World Cup qualifiers don’t start until next June I think
