Germany apparently investigating two people at the top of the energy department for being Russian spies…

Considering Merkel basically handed control of their energy policy to Russia on a silver platter, its a wonder they even needed spies

Stupid games stupid prizes. Between that and the nuclear nonsense Germany deserves whatever comes its way energy wise.
When the Soviet tanks roll into Berlin (again) at least the Germans will have kept their homes nice and warm.

What will that mean?

I’m not sure how much gas Europe is still getting from Russia but guess it’s quite a bit. Until pipeline is turned on again they won’t be getting any more. They’ve been ramping up gas storage for winter so they’ll probably be dipping into that for now. Prices will increase for all as they’ll need more LNG to replace gas used from storage

Putin is trying to make the winter months as painful as possible so started to turn the screw now. Also flexing his muscles. Prick

edit - hopefully it will reopen soon but he’ll be watching/enjoying the pain in the meantime

Unfortunately, we’re all paying for it though mate. All those countries historically heavily reliant on Russian energy, like Germany, are now in everyone else’s (our) limited market pushing prices through the roof.

Our energy security is our own issue so I’m not defending successive governments energy strategies, but as I’ve said before, I thought Merkel was one of the best of a bad bunch, however, some of her main decisions/policies are looking worse and worse by the week

Over reliance on cheap Russian gas and oil
Focus on China as major trading partner
Not paying the 2% GDP on defence leaving Europe weaker

Merkel was a good solid world leader, the kind I wish there were more of but she wasn’t perfect. I’d agree 100% that defence and energy particularly she messed up on. Strong rumours the reason Germany is so hesitant to send arms to Ukraine is they haven’t actually got enough for themselves.

I’m pissed off with the lot of them mate TBH. Moving to renewable generation has never just been about climate but energy security too and hasn’t been given a high enough priority. Both sides of the aisle have messed up, the left partly not being able to get into power and partly being anti nuclear, the right being anti wind in particular in this country which is nuts when we’ve got the highest wind potential on the planet as well as anti insulation when we’ve got the leakiest housing stock.

Money well spent by Putin on the fringe groups on both sides there.

On the military I’m proud of what we’ve been doing, but I think this will sadly mean the era of thinking you don’t need to spend on defence is coming to an end. I don’t blame people for being hopeful economics would soften authoritarian leaders, but looking around it seems a massive misstep now handing manufacturing (and a lot else) to China and energy to Russia and not expecting them to use it as a lever against us.

There’s a real Brexit Bonus ™️ here and one thing Johnson had spot on was the need for investment to build Britain up post Brexit.

I wonder if history will have this war as the defining moment in Europe changing its energy policy and the real start of the 'green revolution'.

Putin inadvertently ends up as the man who saves the human race!

Or he pushes the nuclear button and removes half the world's population which will reduce CO2 emissions drastically.
I think there will be a rethink on reliance for so much on each other. We all need to become a bit more self sufficient , which must be better for the environment.

I see Putin has dropped the “it’s repairs” charade and outright said no gas for Europe until sanctions are lifted. Good to know sanctions work 😂

Think he might be disappointed if he expects it to make a big impact on the war though.

Anyone any idea why someone in Ukraine would think this?

Basically, we have taken a Ukrainian family in (mum, daughter and son), while the husband/dad stays at home. They have been here 4 months now.

But anyway, on Saturday, the husband sent us this....

"Thank you so much for all that you do Thank you so much for all that you do and for us. And things are bad in Ukraine now. America, Biden, agreed with Putin on the division of Ukraine. But the people are against it. Because the war is just beginning in October. We were slowed down by Lend-Lease. More precisely, they simply do not give it to us and do not give it ever. It's all deception. Collusion. Only Poland and England are truly patriotic towards Ukraine and give real help. England and Russia, two eternally inveterate enemies on the our continent. Because the war will be for survival, for death. Our soldiers are without heavy weapons, without any weapons, but dug into the ground and do not allow the infantry to pass after the artillery clearing of the territory. Arms factories in Russia work around the all day and all night. There is not a single weapons factory in Ukraine. No one. Therefore, in my opinion, there is nothing to expect success in the war. Boris Johnson was forced to vacate his position, as he was a very ardent opponent of brutal Russia. And now there will be many deaths, because our soldiers will go to the tanks en masse, with only Kalashnikovs guns.and for us. And things are bad in Ukraine now. America, Biden, agreed with Putin on the division of Ukraine. But the people are against it. Because the war is just beginning in October. We were slowed down by Lend-Lease. I found it very odd and over here we are hearing of many Ukrainian gains. Just wonder if there is any truth in that at, or if it's just come from a series of Chinese whispers."

Well it sounds like something a bot would put out.
Maybe it's something centralised rather than an individual?

Firstly, fair play for taking a family in Otis. Thats an amazing thing to do.

What’s more curious is the comments about Biden. Initially Biden suggested it wouldn’t be too bad if Russian had some of the high Russian populated areas…although might’ve been a senior moment ! Since then though they have been the most supportive country both in terms of cash and weapons.

As Wingy says, wonder if this was originally a bot message and it’s been forwarded on

Absolute respect for you taking the family in Otis.

The views are strange for sure.

No, this is the husband of the family we are hosting for. It's from his direct phone.

I guess the best thing to do is contact him and check. He can say whether he sent it or not can't he.

There’s a lot of shit flying around WhatsApp.

I'd suspect a propaganda/psy-ops campaign by Russia here, getting a message like this passed around in an attempt to demoralise Ukrainian forces.

Variations of this have been going on for a long time. In the old days it was leaflets and radio broadcasts, I'd guess it's moved on to WhatsApp and TikTok now!

Only thing with Biden he originally gaffed about some kind of "limited incursion" before it all kicked off, so perhaps thats the basis for this message?

I'd send a really positive message back to him saying while there may not be factories in Ukraine making ammo, the UK and the US are behind them and will continue to supply arms and ammo. Biden has pledged billions of dollars so don't lose faith, keep stiking it to the Russians. Hopefully that will get passed around the Whatsapp groups.

Eleventy billion well dones to you Otis in helping support that family, you're a real shining light.

Looking at the early stages of the Ukrainian counteroffensive I suspect his views will change by the end of the month anyway.

I know this thread is dead, but can we just stand back and admire what the Ukrainians have done this week?

For those not following, essentially they telegraphed a big assault at the south western edge of the front line, drew Russias best and brightest over a river, blew up the crossings, then just stormed in at the north east and have completely routed the ragtag bunch of “volunteers” and farmers left defending that side. One breakthrough in particular looks close to taking a key town that would cut rail supplies to a huge chunk of territory (Russians move everything by rail).

They’ve taken back more land in the last week than Russia managed the months before that. There’s videos all over of liberating forces arriving and raising the Ukrainian flag.

A genuinely great piece of tactics and it’s looking a lot like if it keeps up like this Putin will be lucky to get out with everything he came in with.

Also Russia have gone full toys out the pram on gas and it doesn’t seem to have moved the needle on prices.

Genuinely think we’re seeing the beginning of the end for Putin, who knows what comes next. They’re not exactly fans of liberal democracy over there.
