The best win out of this for Ukraine is for them still to be Ukraine at the end of the conflict

I think that's the best they can get.

It's a win for Putin, but at a terrible price. I guess we'll never know the true figures of Russian soldier deaths and casualties, but we know it's going to be pretty huge.

I suppose the worst bit of all this is we have no idea if and when Putin will try again. He's been adamant that Ukraine shouldn't even exist and should be part of Russia hasn't he.

There has allegedly been 10000 North Korean soldiers deployed, can see most of these going into hiding as soon a a rocket or bomb lands close by or Ukrainian forces advancing again.

Yeah you’d imagine loads will defect.

Especially as they’ve apparently been enjoying the delights of uncensored internet (ie Pornhub).

They're hardly going to get a chance to defect, they've been sent to almost certain death.

The bigger issue for Kim might be what happens when thousands of disenchanted, demoralised troops return, having seen what life is like outside a regime that is literally starving its own people to death.

Even Russia probably looks good to those guys; it might cause some destabilisation at home, this.

(As an aside, South Korean troops, ROKs, were very well regarded in Vietnam, in the stuff that I've read at least. Well drilled, well organised, tough, and well disciplined.

I don't think that will necessarily hold true for a malnourished, under trained North Korean force, trying to fold into all ill-disciplined, de-motivated Russian army. Especially if they're just used as cannon fodder, which seems likely.)

Just to add, this isn't to imply that I'd have supported the war in Vietnam. It was good that Harold Wilson kept us out of that one, imho.

The absurdity of Russians crying about permission to use western weapons on Russian soil as a step closer to WW3 is ridiculous.

Got to credit Russia, one thing they do really fucking well is irony.

Yes. They flatten another country then complain when that country has the audacity to retaliate.

It’s not retaliating really and the democrats policy in the war has been disingenuous at best

You can call it what you want and shift the blame to who you want. Russia have flattened Ukraine, killed hundreds of thousands and are now complaining that Ukraine are firing rockets into Russia. Something they have been doing themselves for two and a half years.

Not to mention putting 10,000 troops from North Korea into Ukraine then accuse others of starting WW3.

What is it then if it's not retaliating?
It’s responding in an artificially restrained manner.

Can you imagine how Israel would have responded? That miles long stuck convoy from the early days would have been wiped out. AFAIK there are no restrictions on Israel’s use of American supplied ordnance,

I think we're making the same point (unless I've misunderstood you)!

Grendel was saying Ukraine hitting targets inside Russia is not retaliation, insinuating that it's somehow worse than retaliation.

I think you and I are both of the opinion that Ukraine should be allowed to do as they please with the weapons (again, unless I've misunderstood you 😅)

TBH, it's the concept of calling what Ukraine are having to do as mere "retaliation".

They are literally fighting for their lives but with one hand tied behind their backs.

I totally agree with your comment about Russia's mastery of irony though. The have been using weapons sourced from all over their sphere of influence, have used mercenaries and now have North Korean troops with boots on the ground. Im sure there will be plenty of desertion and defections. Kim Jong Un may ultimately have miscalculated as badly as Putin did in kicking this whole sorry mess off.

Yep, 100% agree. Retaliation is the absolute bare minimum description you could use to describe it – I got the impression Grendel was saying the opposite.

And yes it’s disgraceful they are fighting with one hand behind their backs. I am pretty confident they could have driven Russia out of Ukraine had they had the right equipment and backing at the right time. Sadly that moment has now been lost.

This decision should have been made a long time ago – Russia’s red lines have proven to be total folly.

It is showboating from a dying Democratic party in the US. If they wanted to they could have lifted restrictions.

Their policy has been absolute failure - it has not stopped any death, destruction or offered any solution for peace

The US have never cared about Ukraine - other than a way of letting Russia drain resources on an area of zero importance to them,

I’m sure Daddy Trump letting Putin have all of Ukraine will go down in the history books as a master stroke

Nothing will happen - its just propaganda from a doomed administration to pretend it really wanted to do this all along but didnt and knows its going to be reversed.

It wasn't long ago you were saying that supplying jets to Ukraine would result in WW3.

Now you're saying the US could/should have lifted all restrictions and there would be no repercussions.

The reason they didn't lift restrictions is because they were thinking the exact same way you were.

In January this will all be over - no more deaths - that we both want don't we?

If you actually listen to what he's saying here, this is terrifying. Basically military bases in NATO countries are now legitimate targets for attack.
Lets hope he's bluffing, because if not it wouldn't be beyond the realms of fantasy for the UK or US to be attacked tonight

He is bluffing, he isn't going to fire a missile at a NATO country. He knows it'd be the end for him.

Playing devils advocate here, but why do we think we can fire a missile at him and not expect a response?
