Hope this doesn't turn into a repeat of the Maddison scenario, plays a handful of games and is signed by a bigger club.

If we got a decent fee for him robins would sell. Same with Ponticelli and the other kids. If robins doesn't get us up he gets the sack. He doesn't give a shit about building a squad for years to come. If he was to be sold I would be fine with it as long as the money is used well

Well it’s not long now till the new Reg”s are out, so no doubt the money will be used for a new Jag for the Sisu employees to drive to court in.

I believe Bayliss has same agent as the Duke. Rio Ferdinand's company
Hopefully they will have the good sense to realise the lad is in the right place playing men's football in a team pushing for promotion
Someone else said he only has 6 months left on his contract. I'll be surprised if the club hasn't been in talks to extend it

Football makes us all cynical but I do feel Robins' heart is in the right place
Time will tell

Yep. Base Soccer Agency. Stevenson, U18 player Billy Stedman and I believe one of our U16 players are too. They have the majority of top young players signed up

Ex players Maddison, Harries and Thomas aswell

Base Soccer Agency Ltd - Player agency - Player agents

An under 16 player with an agent as far down as this? Jeez!

Yeah, they’re targeting younger players now as soon as they can. I have heard of a player at U13 level at another club being signed, unofficially of course. Our U16 team is a talented one - one of them went to Man United recently and 2 others have been playing up with the 18s and are just as good. The top clubs are aware

Very true STP
Despite having the owners we do those in charge of the Academy can be very proud of the job they've done
It's a self fulfilling set up as Midland based parents with home town clubs currently in the top divisions will bring their lad to Cov knowing they'll get a chance with the first team

Did the lad who went to UTD have the same agent too?

Funny that, because in May Mark Robins said the following: “we are building a club, not just a team – for now and for the future”. We signed all our young players to new contracts and we’ve signed a lot of players this season - up to about 14-16 now (if we’re counting Pearson). As well as this, we’ve been bringing plenty of young players through the ranks. Not because it’s a necessity (like last season), but because they’re genuinely good enough to play a part in senior team.

It’s football at the end of the day, every player has a price and if someone came in with a suitable offer, you can’t blame the club for selling up. We still have to try and break even/turn a profit. A lot of people seem to forget this.

I’m not sure on that one Wingy. What I do know is that he was another player who was well known to big clubs before his move. It’s becoming very difficult for clubs like CCFC to hold onto promising young players into the scholarship and pro contract stage because of how well financed the Category 1 clubs are. Most Category 1 clubs will have a scout for every academy in England and will be well aware of any emerging talent they can poach. The only chance we have of keeping these players is showing them and them believing the pathway we have here if they continue developing and are ultimately good enough they won’t have at these big clubs.

I wasn't blaming the club, I would probably sell too. I think we've heard enough from mark before to not believe everything he says to the media. If we get a bid for a youngster that would help robins strengthen elsewhere he would sell. I don't know why you're bringing up the profit stuff as I didn't mention that, same for the amount of players we have signed? I'm happy with all of that

Maycock has been in and around first team a month or two before Bayliss has.
Maycock seen a few times, came on for Liam Kelly vs Stevenage. Was awfull. Ran around like a headless chicken without even touching the ball. Not really stood out apart from looking out of his depth. But obviously must have something about him if his contract was extended.

Slightly unfair to judge him on that 45 minutes.

Bayliss should get a four year contract in next few weeks.
Maycock actually played for the first team several times last season
Apparently the players rate him but he hasn't shown his full potential so far when he's had the chance
He's still very young and has the size and skills but needs to become stronger both physically and mentally

People are bringing up the profit stuff because its the reality. Coventry have limited revenue streams and owners who are reluctant to invest, so budgets are important. Young players being sold is inevitable, but hopefully we can start getting a couple of seasons out of them first. It's the club's job to make them realise they will develop better and more quickly here.

A club in Coventry's position needs to work to budget and try and develop its own players.

Bayliss has had a much bigger impact than Ponticelli. Robins is right...Tom will play at the highest level. He has so much confidence for a young lad. Enjoy him while he is here till the end of the season.

I feel for Robins like I have all managers recently. Any player that looks anywhere near capable gets sold the moment there is a transfer window.

I have seen him twice, reminds me of Steve Hunt.

Would like to see him a few more times towards the end of the season.

It's funny how football is especially with very young players
Ponti was the flavour of the month until going two or three first team games without scoring
If he gets 4 in 5 games next time he's in the clamour will start again
He has great movement but like all young forwards stepping up he has heaps to learn
U23 games hardly feature tackling at all and few teams double up on the opponents most threatening player like virtually all men's teams do

The thing with bayliss is that if you didn't know his age you wouldn't be able to tell. He just slotted straight in.

Some of the other youngsters you can tell they are.

If he gets sold, he gets sold. That's not SISU cashing in, that's a football club running it's business like it should do...just like the rest of the 91 clubs. If an offer comes in that means you can continue to run your club (more L1/L2 level), then it has to be accepted...that's the way of the world and is certainly not exclusive to CCFC.

My only disappointment is that we don't hold onto players a little longer before selling them for decent profits. Had we told Norwich to come back at the end of the season for Maddison, how better might it have been had he not signed for them in Jan. I know he came back on loan but that's not the same.

Thinking about my point above, we held onto Stevenson last Jan despite a £1.5m bid from Brentford and he doesn't seem to have progressed. I guess it therefore depends on the player. By the sounds of things, Bayliss is a great talent. Hopefully we keep him until at least the end of the season (which I fully expect us to) and then we'd have Andreu to come back. Not the worst replacement for an attacking midfielder if Bayliss did then go.

I heard that we wanted £1.5m but Brentford offered £500 then £750k.
They wanted the lad but wouldn't meet our valuation
Ben was doing well at the time so probably encouraging for this window

Oh yeah, that might of been it. I thought we had turned down £1.5m so know that figure was mentioned. Still, we held onto him and as you say, hopefully will remain the same for Bayliss in this window.

Poor offers at the time given the talk of what was hoped of him and some of the form he showed in a poor side low on confidence, but then how many here would even take half of that right now to strengthen and help try secure promotion. I would.

What a difference 12 months makes with young footballers.

Ok then , it's a business, then give Bayliss a 5 year contract witch will increase he's value ,
and then if the club needs the money to run it's business then sell to the highest bidder and not the first offer .

Things ain't as clear cut as that tho are they, many different factors and influences

Such as ?

You can offer him a long term deal like we have with a few of the academy players who've signed however Bayliss has taken his opportunity in the 1st team and hit the ground running which will mean the balls in his court more than the clubs currently.

At what ever point we offer new terms he or his agent as is the modern game can say he's scored x amount of goals now and been a regular player who's took to senior football with ease so far. He's gained the power to bargain with the club and the right to chance his arm like we've seen with George Thomas recently.

Ideally it would of been better to get him on a new deal before he hit the first team, like Ponticelli who I thinks on his 3rd contract at the club? Might be wrong in that. Maycock too has signed a new deal but has yet to excel in the 1st team so it was in his interest to sign a longer deal where Bayliss is still very young may be being advised otherwise.

Stevenson is the flip side too, he signed a long term deal, on the back of a good run and then failed to get a big money move like his mate Maddison did when a higher placed club showed interest.

Or he could just be happy and sign a improved deal.

We are producing very good technical players now. From late Prem days to 2006 our recruitment was based on physically strong players. We did well in the leagues during that time but when it came to first team transition we struggled. Had a few make the first team in that time like Thornton, McSheffrey, Kirkland and Davenport however we are producing a different type of player now.

Rioch and Stevens then took over in 2007 and since then the quality has improved with the best yet to come in my opinion.

In the mid to late 90s Marcus Hall was a fixture, got England Under 21 caps too whilst in our team.

I here what you say , but GOOD Negotiators , ie the club, can put a clause into his new contract saying any club that offers ex amount of millions the club will not stand in his way if the player wants to leave the club .
Of course the amount of millions is open to negotiation !

Which is where I imagined he's peaked a bit too soon for what the powers that he would of liked, id be surprised tho if he's not been offered new terms but they will be likely be higher now than what it would of been a 6 weeks ago say.

I'd imagine it's tricky to a degree on young players getting there second pro deals as for every Tom Bayliss there's several Ivor Lawtons, Jack Finch and also Baker-Richardsons that need to leave to kick start or find a career in the game.
