But if it's true he did win 'some' cash, it will only add weight to the family believing what they want to believe. A necklace for his daughter, a pair of trainers for his lad, a posh handbag for his wife as a taster of things to come while he assesses what to do with his new found wealth and bingo, they're buying into it.

Maybe it's just that me and the wife are over cautious and like to plan things properly but I can guarantee she wouldn't be involved in me buying dream houses if it was a blag. That's before involving my daughter in it all.

Even though they have always known he is a serial bullshitter?

I can see some degree of belief, but not hook, line and sinker.

Surely you would keep saying to yourself 'but this is Dale, this is Dale!'

And if he has got the money why was he seemingly photoshopping bank statements and lying about his online poker username etc?

Agree entirely. They know perfectly well that he lies. They know that some of those lies are so ridiculous there is literally no way it could be true. Hence why I found it so amazing that they couldn't see that this was 100% fictitious. But it doesn't change any of the above. Even being extremely sceptical, if true it was life changing. If false it was life changing in another way. They would have badly wanted to believe it. When I looked at his forgeries, I looked for the errors. When they looked, I bet they looked for ways in which they COULD be real. That's just people.

And just one final note. I read that thing about his wife and daughter a while ago. I've never heard that story before which isn't to say he didn't do it. It certainly isn't beyond him... but he doesn't have a daughter. He has a son. So there's a least some inaccuracy there.

Which one was that? When it was mentioned about buying a house, it was said his son.

It isn't just people though like I keep saying, if I thought something was going to be life changing like that I'd be making 100% sure it was before starting to go and look at houses and boats. Even more so before putting offers in on them.

You have said they know he makes things up, so why would they suddenly believe he is minted and look for things to believe him if he is a serial bullshitter?

Do you know him / his family?

I said wife and child didn't I? Have I mentioned daughter? Maybe someone else did, or I made a mistake, but in the post of mine you have quoted I said 'wife and child.' :)

Maybe you would, Nick. And I think I would I too. What I'm saying is, that it's not THAT surprising that they didn't. It makes them flawed people, but not unusual or bad people I don't think.

I was referring to the story about them being injured in a car crash which turned out to be a lie. That story said it was his wife and daughter. Always found that story a little odd for that reason but maybe the guy who posted it just got that detail wrong.

Who posted it? You remember?

I was contacted by someone who says they know Dale and they told me that story. I have since deleted it, so I can't remember now whether she said 'son, daughter, or child.' I think it was just 'child' though.

As soon as they start going along with it and fueling it rather than getting him help I find it unusual. If the guy is a known bullshitter why is his wife going along with making offers on houses? This then starts to have an impact on other people's lives then and there is potentially a chain of damage when it ruins other people's house sale.

To me, it's very surprising they go along with it and his wife allowed his child to become involved with it. That's not being responsible is it?

Do you know them? You seem to be going along the lines of "ah it's just a Dale tale again" and it's just how he is. If that's the case and he doesn't have mental issues then he probably should end up in court whether it's CCFC, Solicitors or the guy he pissed around buying a house from.

It was definitely a "daughter" mentioned because I remember discussing it with someone for exactly that reason. As I say, maybe the person that told you the story just mis-remembered a detail.

Totally agree, Nick.

If someone is a serial bullshitter you usually question anything and everything and the very fact they ARE a bullshitter makes you check things out even more thoroughly.

I used to have a bullshiting friend. He was known as 'Bobby Liar' (after Billy Liar) and he would bullshit about everything. No-one ever believed what he said and at one point he said he was given a lot of money, so we all said to him 'prove it then!' but he never did.

Tragic end for him eventually because he hung himself from a tree. :(

Everything you've said is right, but I think people in heightened situations do strange things. Please don't get me wrong, I've taken the exact view you've taken above all the way through. It was his family that I could never understand and have I've said multiple times to various people that it's their feeding of the story by going along with it that is allowing it to continue and any terrible consequences are as much on them as on Dale. But I suppose having sat down, and tried to put myself in their shoes and removed a little of my own sceptical nature, I can see how it would happen.

Exactly. Which is why the first time I was told "Hey, have you heard Dale's won £14million" my reaction was immediately "No. He hasn't" before I'd seen any evidence either way. It was Dale. It was always going to be bullshit. But I had nothing to lose either way. I'm pretty certain I personally would have reacted the same way even if I had, but I think plenty wouldn't and clearly his family fall into that category.

Yes, I think you're right. But I'm sure when you first relayed the story you said daughter. And I THINK when I've read you mention it since you've referred to a daughter or when another poster has referred to your post. So maybe the person that told you the story got it wrong. As I say, could still have absolutely happened. Just didn't sit quite right with me for that reason.

Exactly, if somebody is well known as bullshitting then it makes you want to check things even more. It doesn't suddenly change when they make up a story that you want to believe, it makes you stupid.

"I've got a Lambo at home"
"No you haven't, stop bullshitting. Show me it"
"I can't show you it, but you can have it if you want"
"Oh can I? I can't wait, what's the reg so I can get insurance quotes?"

It doesn't work like that.

That's the thing, everyone's different.

And it's not easy to change peoples' views if they know things to be true anyway. It's not as simple as just saying and it stops, it's not as easy as just reporting people and it stops.

At the risk of going Jeremy Kyle, people have to recognise themselves.

Of course it won't stop it, but it certainly won't help or change while his family are going along with it and seemingly encouraging it.

It is looking like Bonotelli knows them, it's just being played down as not really a mental issue but just a bit of a bullshitter. Tell that to a bloke who missed out on a dream house because of it or a solicitor who could have had their business and reputation ruined.

Sounds like it doesn't it.

If Dale DID win £14m (he said £10m), which wife in their right mind would let him put ALL that £14m into a football club?

I would have thought divorce would be on the cards. It would be absolute and total madness and completely and totally unfair on his wife and family.

It's now gone up to least £20m of course.

So why do people close to him allow it to continue to the point it could land him in court and have an impact on their lives?
Exactly. The guy could end up in prison. So the husband you know to be a total bullshitter could end up in prison, yet you do nothing to stop him making the false statements and forging documents?

Truthfully, I don't know. I don't want to talk out of school by giving out private details, but I do know they've only recently begun to accept that it's definitely not true. And before you say it, yes. That's totally fucking bizzare to me and you as to go along with this you've got to accept he won this money in august and you've never seen a penny. Believe me, I've said as much. But they're not bad people and having reflected on it I suspect a lot would potentially behave in a similar way. That's all I'm saying.

No, I wasn't demanding personal details (far from it).

It's a bit more serious though, if somebody did want to take him to court it's when they start to potentially be out of pocket / lose homes etc which is when lives get ruined.

Are you saying it also isn't a mental condition, it's just him?

Well.. I suppose when you talk about mental illness it's always to some extent subjective, isn't it? You could argue any way of thinking that isn't "usual" is mental illness. Is addiction a mental illness? Alcoholics Anonymous would say so wouldn't they? And I would say that he's an addict. He's addicted to the attention and the perceived respect he gets with these stories and in a very real way. If you look at the time line of all this, he had an opportunity to come out golden. When Hoffman had said he'd seen proof of the money and Dale was now part of the consortium and been advised to keep his mouth shut that was his chance. He could have said nothing more ever and everyone would have believed he was a multimillionaire who was part of a long term plan to buy the football club. He would have been revered every time he went down the Ricoh. But he couldn't help himself. As soon as the direct attention died down he was back on Facebook. "It's happening tonight!! PUSB!!" He's a junky looking for a fix.

But is he suffering from a delusion or some form of mania? Does he actually believe that he is a millionaire? No.

In which case his family should be either booking him in for help or distancing from it before they get the backlash of it.

Everybody wouldn't have believed him as it sounded like nonsense from the start. If you are now saying he doesn't believe it himself and he is addicted to attention why were his family believing it and going to look at fancy houses? Doesn't add up.

If he has no "condition" as such and just did it for a bit of attention then I don't see any reason why he shouldn't end up in court because of it if he carries it on.

But you have to remember, Otis as mad as it sounds she's really only just started to accept that it isn't true. He would have had plenty of stories for why the house purchase had "fallen through" or been "delayed", lots of reasons why they couldn't spend any money yet. All entirely unbelievable to the subjective observer, but less so to the wife and mother who has to either try and believe it or accept this entirely ridiculous situation for what it actually is and all the consequences to her family it is likely to bring. I'm not saying its right or that it's what I would do. But I can see how it would happen.

So, from the knowledge you have, has he not won anything at all? Not even a small amount he has embellished and got carried away with?

So it's obvious to people who heard him on the radio for less than 5 minutes it didn't add up but not to somebody who lives with him who could say "show balance" at the cashpoint or something along those lines?

You have said he is known to be a serial bullshitter already, why didn't she put it down as ridiculous until proven otherwise?

Again I know people react differently, but surely if there was any chance of consequences to her family in the slightest it should be nipped in the bud.

I think you have to timeline this a little..

So the first story is "Hey, I've won £14million gambling!"

"Sure Dale"..

"Hey, I've found a great house. Lets go and have a look round"

*sigh" "OK Dale, sure". *what's the harm in going for a look round a house*

...and then it escalates.

"I've put an offer in and it's been accepted"...

"....oh... right.."

And then you're into the situation I described above. It's go along or tear the walls of your life down.. but since being pictured looking around that house in August you'll notice there's been no reference to his wife's involvement or engagement with the story since.

You're right. Doing nothing since isn't enough. But that first house viewing isn't proof of someone purposely feeding the story.

Well yep, can maybe understand falling for it at first, but surely as soon as people on the likes of here called it bullshit very early on and pointed out the errors and inaccuracies word would have got back to his wife, if not directly, at least through friends and other family.

It was called as bullshit very early on. That surely got back to his wife. Be impossible not to get back to her and so many people were calling it bullshit and this is coming from her husband who she knows is a bullshitter.

But that's it Nick. It WAS obvious after 5 minutes on the radio and yet how many people that heard the same interview that you and I did still believed. Not just believed it in fact. Vociferously defended it! They ignored what was obvious because they wanted it. My point is, his closest family would have wanted it a lot more. I suspect they saw what they wanted to see as lot of Cov fans did. Even the Cov fans that were told he was a serial bullshitter.

I don't think it's a question of "falling for it". I think deep down they knew it didn't add up. Or in fact it did add up to entirely what it has turned out to be. What I'm saying is they clung to the hope and ignored the reality the reality was pretty dark for them when you think about it. I think they hid from it.

Yep, get all that, but still, we didn't know him from Adam and called it out to be bullshit, yet his wife who knows he is a serial bullshitter didn't spot it at all.

Still find that incredibly odd and I think you could maybe be fooled for a day or two, but would then start doubting and thinking 'hang on, this Dale.'

His closest family would know he is a serial bullshitter and hear them day in day out. His closest family have a child to protect from it all which CCFC fans don't.

All CCFC fans have to lose from it is being a little bit gutted when they realise it isn't true, his family however have a lot more and they would know full well what he was like (which ccfc fans wouldn't at first).

Let's just remember that they involved their child in this as well. Who does that?
