So if it wasn't for gated communities the rich would live on council estates?

They live in gated communities for safety reasons. If they didn't they still wouldn't live next door to you. They would buy a property that would be in an area the vast majority couldn't afford to live in.

Where do you live? Would you like to live in a very rough place where you don't feel safe? Why not? Why don't you live there? Because you can afford to live somewhere better. The rich can afford somewhere better again.

I believe in mixed estates. So, yeah. Not a big fan of ghettos. I don’t think it works in society.

You want to opt out, fuck off to an oil rig.

A divide from what though? My front wall divides mine and my neighbours houses from the path. We have a fence inbetween at the back to divide.

I wouldn't want to live in one to divide myself from the outside world. I would still go outside.

Does the gated office I work in means it thinks it is better than others or just likes the security of knowing who comes in and out?

Who do you see on your walk out the house though Nick? Who determines the priorities of your local representatives?

You can’t pull out the top end and not expect the other segments to pull apart too. No different to Asian communities where everyone doesn’t speak English.

We are a community whether you like it or not. When I grew up places still had a bit of a mix of people, it’s all segregated now and it’s not good for cohesion.

Personally I think cohesion is the big challenge of the 21st century. YMMV.

When I walk to my bin I don't see anybody, when I go in the back garden I don't see anybody as I have 6 foot fences all around.

If I lived somewhere gated I would still go outside of the gates. I wouldn't be confined to living inside them.

Why are you so obtuse?

It's not being obtuse.

Unless I am missing something, people who live behind gates still go into the outside world and speak to normal people?

It's all well and good saying about communities and talking to people in the street but how many places are like that now? Yeah, if you live in a nice cul de sac you can let the kids go out and play and not worry about them.

I don't doubt that there are some snobby pricks who wouldn't talk to the "paupers" but they don't have to live in a gated area to be like that, I know people like that who live in a normal semi detached.

I suppose the worry is that we get gated communities like those in South Africa which are beginning to divide communities along the old apartheid lines. Understandable that in extremely dangerous places like Johannesburg and Cape Town that you would feel safer but it is creating cities within cities with little real integration.

And really not needed in Warwick! Knock yourself out if you want to. It's been reduced, too, so they're probably open to offers.

Birch End, Warwick 2 bed end of terrace house for sale - £230,000

Street view:

Google Maps

Plays on fear too. There's zero need for that barrier... but it does get the developers an annual service charge of £420 (at time of writing) from this particular house. Can't imagine why they'd be keen...

I'd have no issue living behind a gate like that. Not being snobby or anything or because I think I'm better than anybody else. It wouldn't be too much different to how we live now apart from a bit more security and people not wandering about the street for no reason.

Not keen on the service charge and if the gate broke. ;)

The house is tiny too.

Is it much different from blocks of flats you have to be buzzed into?

Some people who live in there may well think they are above others, my view would be more based on security.

I must have moved up in the world, I’m living in a country where every apartment in cities are behind gates. If anyone showed me a leaflet with an ungated house for sales i’d probably wipe my arse on it

How come it’s so quiet on here?

What do we think of the bizarre vote to change the backstop arrangements?

Fantasy?
Playing hard ball?

What do we think is likely?

But who are we to decide how people should live if what they do is legal?

Are you against people who don't speak English as well as people who live in gated housing?

What's the issue with people living behind gates? They do go outside them, they aren't (well, not the ones I have seen) are cults where they live there and only there.
It depends how deep you look.

1. It is fine to pay for additional security to protect your hard earned assets
2. You only earned your assets through actions that assist in actually depriving those who you now seek to protect yourself from because they are relatively desperate
3. If you reinvested your wealth directly in your own community (social, education, policing etc) maybe ypu would not feel so threatened
4. There is ALWAYS going to be people out there thst simply get off from robbing others of what they have
5. See point 2

There are probably many other additions of thought to that...all are right & wrong depending how you look at it.

It is like many issues...a major societal conundrum

Keep up Nick. You are obtuse if you don't agree with some on here. You are not allowed an opinion even if it the opinion of the majority.

May will drag this shit out for as long as possible... the media will provide some spurious ‘distraction’ and Tony Blair will continue to be an insipid little c***

Plus Fantasy...

Though I’d also tax at 90% above £1m and have hefty wealth taxes, so gated communities would be the least of the rich’s problems.
That is akin to ethnic cleansing imo. What you are suggesting is banishing or at least discriminating against people who perchance upon fabulous wealth through entrepreneurial means. Almost discriminating against wealth - the absolute opposite of what our structure currently errs towards.

Progressive tax regimes are akin to ethnic cleansing. I think I have heard enough for this evening. Fucking hell.
Well if you earned over the threshold - would ypu stay? Or move to a.n.other tax regime where you pay significantly less in tax. If you boil it down to a bottom line - it all comes down to a net worth.
If you have experienced executing a will for someone close - you would perhaps understand...graft, principles, values, love, passion, emotion (or anything else you care to throw into the pot) counts for nothing. Your parent/loved one's life is ultimately whittled down into asset value & debts. One pays the other & what is left is distributed according to your will.
So if it is a question of leaving £100k or £10k to YOUR loved ones...you'd happily say "nah - fuck 'em...they don't deserve it anyway" ???

'Alternative arrangements!'

Why didn't we just go for that in the first place? Alternative arrangements sounds great and I would definitely have voted for that at the start.

The perfect solution and we can now all unite through alternative arrangements.

We can all shake hands this morning and now leave on the 29th March.

It's bloody genius and I'm sure all the EU heads are nodding their heads in agreement, amazed at this sensational, innovative and superbulous idea.

Wow!

Good old alternative arrangements.

At the next election I think I am going to vote for whichever leader says 'I am going to do something!'

Don't know how this is being described as Theresa's Triumph this morning in the press.

She wasn't budging and said it was her deal or no deal and that's it. Nothing else.

Now she is having to go back to Brussels once more and it had to be an amendment from one of her back bench MP's , NOT the PM to get things going again and I see there is no mention of the other defeat for May, that of a majority stating for country to not accept a no deal scenario.

How many EU leaders will be laughing up their sleeves this morning? I'm sure Mrs May has become a bit of a joke figure to them.

Feb 13th could be a lot of fun and there is a prediction of resignations in the house.

Do you think May really wants to take us out of the EU Otis?

I have had this doubt for a long time. She only aims to take the path which is already blocked. She has used delay tactics to run the clock down knowing that most MP's will do what they can to stop us leaving without a deal. And she has said from the start that she will give up her position of PM as soon as Brexit is over. So she wasn't expecting a good end to the situation.

To me the next thing that will happen is the leave date of March will be extended. Leave without a deal will still be on the table. And we will end up with close ties to the EU remaining.

The irony is that if it happens it will be what nobody at all voted for.

What else would a Brexiteer be able to deliver though? So far they’ve been good at getting all shouty but not deliveryint any viable solutions. Considering they’ve been waiting years for this, you’d think they’d be better prepared.

It’s all well and good going on about alternative solutions but what are they?!

From the outside looking in the country is looking a shadow of its former self, the spin on the front of the Mail and Express is pretty funny though

I only listened to about 5 mins all told of the debate and that question was asked numerous times. What are the alternative arrangements? And no one had an answer.

This scenario fits astutes she doesn’t wanna leavie and gives May the opportunity to say she listened to Parliament even though she didn’t suggest it.

It gives the mail and express the opportunity to blame the Eu when they say and what does alternative arrangement mean ?

Does someone have an answer or solution?

Who knows.

Why would anything be offered for leaving to someone who doesn't want to leave by someone who doesn't want us to leave?

Voted for what?

They voted to remain in the EU. But we would be leaving the EU but to be tied to the EU in another way. Those who voted leave didn't vote to be tied to the EU after leaving.

So it would be the best result all round but not the result anyone voted for.
