So if it wasn't for gated communities the rich would live on council estates?
They live in gated communities for safety reasons. If they didn't they still wouldn't live next door to you. They would buy a property that would be in an area the vast majority couldn't afford to live in.
Where do you live? Would you like to live in a very rough place where you don't feel safe? Why not? Why don't you live there? Because you can afford to live somewhere better. The rich can afford somewhere better again.
A divide from what though? My front wall divides mine and my neighbours houses from the path. We have a fence inbetween at the back to divide.
I wouldn't want to live in one to divide myself from the outside world. I would still go outside.
Does the gated office I work in means it thinks it is better than others or just likes the security of knowing who comes in and out?
Who do you see on your walk out the house though Nick? Who determines the priorities of your local representatives?
You can’t pull out the top end and not expect the other segments to pull apart too. No different to Asian communities where everyone doesn’t speak English.
We are a community whether you like it or not. When I grew up places still had a bit of a mix of people, it’s all segregated now and it’s not good for cohesion.
Personally I think cohesion is the big challenge of the 21st century. YMMV.
Why are you so obtuse? When I walk to my bin I don't see anybody, when I go in the back garden I don't see anybody as I have 6 foot fences all around.
If I lived somewhere gated I would still go outside of the gates. I wouldn't be confined to living inside them.
Why are you so obtuse?
I suppose the worry is that we get gated communities like those in South Africa which are beginning to divide communities along the old apartheid lines. Understandable that in extremely dangerous places like Johannesburg and Cape Town that you would feel safer but it is creating cities within cities with little real integration.
Project gate fear mateI must have moved up in the world, I’m living in a country where every apartment in cities are behind gates. If anyone showed me a leaflet with an ungated house for sales i’d probably wipe my arse on it
Thing is - there are crashes (a carpark bump) & crashes (Sophia Floersch variety). It is all about how as an individual you perceive it
To keep you in???I don't get the gated community thing either.
If I won the lottery I'd buy a big house surrounded by a huge fence and gates.
But who are we to decide how people should live if what they do is legal?I believe in mixed estates. So, yeah. Not a big fan of ghettos. I don’t think it works in society.
You want to opt out, fuck off to an oil rig.
Are you against people who don't speak English as well as people who live in gated housing? No different to Asian communities where everyone doesn’t speak English.

It depends how deep you look. What's the issue with people living behind gates? They do go outside them, they aren't (well, not the ones I have seen) are cults where they live there and only there.
FantasyHow come it’s so quiet on here?
What do we think of the bizarre vote to change the backstop arrangements?
Fantasy?
Playing hard ball?
What do we think is likely?
Keep up Nick. You are obtuse if you don't agree with some on here. You are not allowed an opinion even if it the opinion of the majority. It's not being obtuse.
Unless I am missing something, people who live behind gates still go into the outside world and speak to normal people?
It's all well and good saying about communities and talking to people in the street but how many places are like that now? Yeah, if you live in a nice cul de sac you can let the kids go out and play and not worry about them.
I don't doubt that there are some snobby pricks who wouldn't talk to the "paupers" but they don't have to live in a gated area to be like that, I know people like that who live in a normal semi detached.

That is akin to ethnic cleansing imo. What you are suggesting is banishing or at least discriminating against people who perchance upon fabulous wealth through entrepreneurial means. Almost discriminating against wealth - the absolute opposite of what our structure currently errs towards.Though I’d also tax at 90% above £1m and have hefty wealth taxes, so gated communities would be the least of the rich’s problems.

Well if you earned over the threshold - would ypu stay? Or move to a.n.other tax regime where you pay significantly less in tax. If you boil it down to a bottom line - it all comes down to a net worth.Progressive tax regimes are akin to ethnic cleansing. I think I have heard enough for this evening. Fucking hell.
Do you think May really wants to take us out of the EU Otis?
I have had this doubt for a long time. She only aims to take the path which is already blocked. She has used delay tactics to run the clock down knowing that most MP's will do what they can to stop us leaving without a deal. And she has said from the start that she will give up her position of PM as soon as Brexit is over. So she wasn't expecting a good end to the situation.
To me the next thing that will happen is the leave date of March will be extended. Leave without a deal will still be on the table. And we will end up with close ties to the EU remaining.
The irony is that if it happens it will be what nobody at all voted for.
And why have successive Brexit Secretaries not suggested them?!?It’s all well and good going on about alternative solutions but what are they?!?
No one????? Think 15-16m voted for thatDo you think May really wants to take us out of the EU Otis?

Who knows. What else would a Brexiteer be able to deliver though? So far they’ve been good at getting all shouty but not deliveryint any viable solutions. Considering they’ve been waiting years for this, you’d think they’d be better prepared.

From the outside looking in the country is looking a shadow of its former self, the spin on the front of the Mail and Express is pretty funny though
Voted for what?No one????? Think 15-16m voted for that
