Who do you see on your walk out the house though Nick? Who determines the priorities of your local representatives?
You can’t pull out the top end and not expect the other segments to pull apart too. No different to Asian communities where everyone doesn’t speak English.
We are a community whether you like it or not. When I grew up places still had a bit of a mix of people, it’s all segregated now and it’s not good for cohesion.
Personally I think cohesion is the big challenge of the 21st century. YMMV.

When I walk to my bin I don't see anybody, when I go in the back garden I don't see anybody as I have 6 foot fences all around.
If I lived somewhere gated I would still go outside of the gates. I wouldn't be confined to living inside them.

Unless I am missing something, people who live behind gates still go into the outside world and speak to normal people?
It's all well and good saying about communities and talking to people in the street but how many places are like that now? Yeah, if you live in a nice cul de sac you can let the kids go out and play and not worry about them.
I don't doubt that there are some snobby pricks who wouldn't talk to the "paupers" but they don't have to live in a gated area to be like that, I know people like that who live in a normal semi detached.

I suppose the worry is that we get gated communities like those in South Africa which are beginning to divide communities along the old apartheid lines. Understandable that in extremely dangerous places like Johannesburg and Cape Town that you would feel safer but it is creating cities within cities with little real integration.

I'd have no issue living behind a gate like that. Not being snobby or anything or because I think I'm better than anybody else. It wouldn't be too much different to how we live now apart from a bit more security and people not wandering about the street for no reason.

It depends how deep you look.
1. It is fine to pay for additional security to protect your hard earned assets
2. You only earned your assets through actions that assist in actually depriving those who you now seek to protect yourself from because they are relatively desperate
3. If you reinvested your wealth directly in your own community (social, education, policing etc) maybe ypu would not feel so threatened
4. There is ALWAYS going to be people out there thst simply get off from robbing others of what they have
5. See point 2
There are probably many other additions of thought to that...all are right & wrong depending how you look at it.
It is like many issues...a major societal conundrum

Well if you earned over the threshold - would ypu stay? Or move to a.n.other tax regime where you pay significantly less in tax. If you boil it down to a bottom line - it all comes down to a net worth.
If you have experienced executing a will for someone close - you would perhaps understand...graft, principles, values, love, passion, emotion (or anything else you care to throw into the pot) counts for nothing. Your parent/loved one's life is ultimately whittled down into asset value & debts. One pays the other & what is left is distributed according to your will.
So if it is a question of leaving £100k or £10k to YOUR loved ones...you'd happily say "nah - fuck 'em...they don't deserve it anyway" ???

Why didn't we just go for that in the first place? Alternative arrangements sounds great and I would definitely have voted for that at the start.
The perfect solution and we can now all unite through alternative arrangements.
We can all shake hands this morning and now leave on the 29th March.
It's bloody genius and I'm sure all the EU heads are nodding their heads in agreement, amazed at this sensational, innovative and superbulous idea.

At the next election I think I am going to vote for whichever leader says 'I am going to do something!'
Don't know how this is being described as Theresa's Triumph this morning in the press.
She wasn't budging and said it was her deal or no deal and that's it. Nothing else.
Now she is having to go back to Brussels once more and it had to be an amendment from one of her back bench MP's , NOT the PM to get things going again and I see there is no mention of the other defeat for May, that of a majority stating for country to not accept a no deal scenario.
How many EU leaders will be laughing up their sleeves this morning? I'm sure Mrs May has become a bit of a joke figure to them.
Feb 13th could be a lot of fun and there is a prediction of resignations in the house.

I only listened to about 5 mins all told of the debate and that question was asked numerous times. What are the alternative arrangements? And no one had an answer.

Voted for what?
They voted to remain in the EU. But we would be leaving the EU but to be tied to the EU in another way. Those who voted leave didn't vote to be tied to the EU after leaving.
So it would be the best result all round but not the result anyone voted for.
