I know the reality. I've been at home since March the 23rd. Undoubtedly there will be job losses. I just think it's a disgrace that people will be losing their livelihoods through no fault of their own.

lots of ordinary working people lost their jobs as a result of the 2008 banking crisis, not only that, they ended up footing the bill via austerity!
A quick look through Google suggests there's no mechanism in international law for suing a country responsible for a pandemic. if the States pursue it it will just be down to geopolitical cock waving.

Meanwhile the rest of us are just going to have to get on with it and lets be honest no one is going to formally censure China in any big way. You work for Land Rover, if your order bank from China goes through the roof in the next year you're going to say thank you very much, build 'em and ship 'em, and why the fuck wouldn't you?

If we're looking for countries to foot the bill for damage caused, I look forward to Boris rolling out a reparations schedule starting with India and Kenya, just as phase one of making things right for the amount of people this country has murdered down the years.

Greece might get the Elgin marbles back, Egypt might get all their stuff back from all the British museums that was stolen from Egypt. The list of pilfered goods sat in British museums is endless.

Environmentalists saying well all work from home and reduce consumption: not going to happen

Technologists saying well all do remote work and online learning: not going to happen

Left wingers pushing UBI: not going to happen

Isolationists pushing reduced globalisation: not going to happen.

The economic forces driving all those things will still exist post virus.

Has anyone ever paid compensation for a pandemic that originated in their country?
The Yanks are pushing for it but they've been responsible for two pandemics themselves and I'm fairly sure they never paid out compensation.

Ultimately you've got to look after yourself as nobody else will. I would like to see us rely less on the east and Europe for parts and start making them here again. It's the old problem of cost though and greedy shareholders wanting everything done on a shoestring.

Havent a clue. This is a bit different though surely? The world has come to a standstill through the Chinese not being honest. I just thought in an ideal world people who've lost loved ones who they're dependent on,jobs,homes could have some kind of compensation to help them out.

China not being honest as soon as they could have been is irrelevant to a certain extent. When a virus this menacing gets out it’s out. The moral indignation is amazing.

We kill an estimated 29 million people in the name of colonisation, take £billions away from India, invent concentration camps, wipe out entire populations, steal their wealth & artefacts, take their land- we have no comment to make. The Chinese lose control of a virus and it spreads throughout the world, and we make an utter fuck up of dealing with it- boycott China, sue them, how dare they, they're evil, it was on purpose, lets get them back, while the Chinese snigger at the stupidity & then get back to work doing what they do best.

We are the last nation on earth who has any right to be dictating the wrongs that any other country has committed (with USA rapidly catching up on the rails).

Because the WHO have moved away from names like that as they are not helpful and like spanish flu usually very wrong.

It’s the history of this virus type. Swine flu, bird flu, SARS etc etc. They all started in the human race when they jumped from another species by either consumption or close contact to the animal through farming or preparation of the dead animal for consumption. Vets who work with cattle, slaughter men and farmers in this country on a fairly regular basis catch bovine TB for instance. It only has to mutate once in the right/wrong direction and we have a new strain of bovine TB that’s contagious and deadly to humans becoming a worldwide pandemic. If that starts in the U.K. and the government take the same lame response as they have with this pandemic should the world sue us?

Spanish flu was 100 years ago, WHO naming guidance has been to not associate with a place or animal for some time as it confuses the issue and leads to people making incorrect assumptions about its spread. Plus racism. As this thread nicely demonstrates.

It’s proper name is SARS-CoV-2, “SARS” was SARS-CoV-1.

SARS means “severe acute respiratory syndrome”, CoV means coronavirus. So this is the second coronavirus that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome.

Actually there was plenty of evidence of coverups at every level from farmers trying to hide it, slaughter houses trying to hide it, inspectors failing to follow procedures properly in an attempt to hide the severity and according to the conservatives who were in opposition at the time the coverup went all the way to Tony Blair. By pure luck it was neither as contagious or serious to humans as Covid 19 but to suggest that we didn’t as a country and individuals didn’t down play it down or cover it up is just plain wrong. The history is very well documented.

Through suicide or austerity? Not sure on suicide but austerity has been blamed for up to 130000 preventable deaths in this country alone. So at the moment if you want to measure it the 2008 recession caused by the US toxic mortgage crisis is responsible for more deaths in the U.K. than Covid 19.
