Tbh Fauci hasn't made himself look great either, his comments came across as strange and bitter......

A vaccine being approved should be celebrated, we have obviously made sure its safe

Yeah, I was concerning myself by reading about the swine flu vaccine they developed, that caused side effects. That, however, was rushed through without the proper regulatory process. What's a few months after all, compared to a lifetime of wellness or illness?

Swine flu was very different. For a start all the people who took it had to sign a waiver showing they understood it was experimental and hadn’t been approved by the regulator I believe.
Depends where you live though surely? Lived in Eastern Green for 3 years and it's a desolate wasteland with absolutely fuck all about it other than twitchy curtain nimbys. There was a better community spirit and more amenities when I lived in Hillfields.
Back in Earlsdon now and it's bustling still.

Edit: I suppose Earlsdon is a good example of what you are saying though.

Yeah it helps that I’m back in Earlsdon and that’s a perfect example. But why can’t that be fostered elsewhere? Isn’t half the problem with some estates/areas that they aren’t built to enable that?

I'd be happy for all the little signs staying up reminding strangers to keep their distance in queues and that kind of thing but I can't wait for the day we don't have to bother with masks.

Would you be up for a social norm that says wear them if you’re feeling ill, or wear them on public transport?

Absolutely, I'd go for that in a second. Thinking particularly of the people who insist on coming to work because they don't feel that bad but completely ignore that they are passing their germs to others who might end up feeling like shit.

I wouldn't even say the poorer areas. More the hiding away from real life suburbs. Finham springs to mind. (I've also lived there)
There is absolutely nothing going on there and they are up in arms about any change.
Cov has loads of really dull suburbia. Loads of areas have little to no amenity, the same dull chain pubs and you need a car to get from place to place. I really don't understand why house prices in places like Finham are so high.

Because it’s school got a rep as good and now it’s a self fulfilling prophecy of nice middle class people moving to be close to it.

I found it awfully sterile TBH.

Earlsdon works I assume because it’s an ex village, but surely it must be possible to develop places to have the same component parts?

We were looking at houses in Finham recently until we decided to leave a house move until things are a bit more normal, schools were essentially the sole reason. If fuck all goes on there that suits me quite nicely to be honest

People need bland and uneventful neighbour hoods to dwell in to allow them to compose themselves after the excitement and euphoria of a visit to the city centre

Limited knowledge, but isn't cancer a bit of a catch all term for loads of different things so extremely difficult to find a cure for it.

Yeah, this is one of the missus’ triggers whenever someone says about “curing cancer”.

Weve been making steady progress with survival rates though. Think it’ll be more of this than some miracle “cure” even if you ignore the pedantry.

I used to work in cancer research making drug candidates, albeit not for very long. Certain types draw way more funding than others and that then dictates the speed of research. Some of the more novel treatments are ingenious, read about one where bacteria were programmed to go into the centre of a tumour then self destruct with a cell toxin to kill the cancer cells.

Aside from brain tumours which are very difficult owing to the blood brain barrier chemo is much more targeted than it used to be

I’m definitely fine wearing a mask if I feel a bit rough in the future.

Makes it seem ridiculous that previously we were spreading all sorts round by going into the office and sneezing everywhere when we could have just worn a mask and worked from home.

It does seem ludicrous now

At least we saved our economy 🤦‍♂️

Not sure who Ian Harris is but he should at least do proper comparibles (on an annualised basis), not just picking and choosing random figures from some countries and not others.

where’s the deaths for Spain, Italy, France for Nov ?!! Is he saying we should’ve been more like Sweden ?

ps Im also pretty sure the GDP figures are wrong or at least the way he’s framed/presented them is misleading. Looking at the forecast ‘growth’ figures for 2020, here’s a few example estimates for the year

U.K. -10-11%
Spain - 11-11.5%
Italy - 10%
France - 9.5%

I’m not for a minute saying we’ve done well but why frame bullshit in this way...try to depress the country even more in the middle of a pandemic ?!! Nice one. He appears to be the other end of the spectrum to Williamson (we’re better than everyone else), who’s also a prick !

edit - Happy Friday though all.

Yep not a big fan of the governments handling of this but comparable countries are all just as bad. The unstatesmanlike nonsense and analogies and metaphors pisses me off too.

But looking at Spain and Italy and France everyone has been caught out and managed things very poorly. Very few worldwide leaders come out with any credit at all

Not sure why the government keeps delivering headlines instead of delivering reality. They just keep setting themselves up to look incompetent.

Its so dumb. If they all agreed to move to Stoke then Stoke Park would be an Outstanding school being massively sought after.

With you on the deaths figures, especially absolute numbers and not per capita.

Not sure I agree on the GDP figures though, your figures seem to be projections, but those figures in the tweet are data from OECD I believe. We have had one of the worst economic performances, this is a good overview:Subscribe to read | Financial Times

The main takeaways seem to be we were slow to lock down and the PPE procurement process has been wasteful.

Agreed Pete. We were all ill prepared and have struggled to get to grips with it. I honestly do think every nation (with the exception of some of what trump/States have done) has tried to do their best in unprecedented times though. Look at even Germany’s numbers for the second wave...and I rate Merkel - not looks wise ; )

Hopefully 2021 will be better for everyone

Agree mate. Yes, they are projections and as far as I’m aware reasonably up to date. I think the annualised growth will be a more accurate comparison (I might end up being wrong but I think the differences between us and the other EU countries I detailed will be nearer my figures ie the projections than his/the way he’s presented his)
