Only 25 million people are expected to get the vaccine next year, so I wouldn't get too excited just yet.

Rapid testing, masks and therapeutic treatments are the key to controlling this, and always have been. But we've all become so fixated with the vaccine that we've been lulled into thinking the pandemic is almost over.

I'm not thinking for one minute it's over but 25 million people is over a third of the population and should cover a large swathe of the vulnerable.
As I said I don't think will be back to normal for a long time but we should start to move out of the current restrictions. I still expect to see masks and social distancing for a good while yet.

I get that, but my workload went through the roof with remote learning and has done again since the return when FYI I still haven't been able to teach close to normally. Aside from those in the health service it's probably been one of the most intensive jobs this year

If I could send you the home schooling we received I would, but if it took an hour to produce I would be amazed and it was mainly produced by the teaching assistants and this from a school that is in the top two in Nuneaton.

I have three children of different ages and different abilities to try to teach as well as having to work full time nights.

Maybe it will improve as the head has disappeared from the school.

I understand that. It's a shit situation all round. We're all doing things within our jobs that we'd rather not be doing, and add in to the mix that we can't do all the enjoyable things in life. It makes life really tough.

Our approach has never been to minimise the number of cases, its been not to overwhelm the NHS. So once you've got the groups that make up the vast majority of hospitalisations vaccinated then you can start opening things back up.

If we can get anywhere close to the rate of vaccination the government is claiming we can that will be in time for the summer, when going by last year, things will ease off anyway.

But it certainly won't be back to normal overnight.

I believe Van Tam said that with the key groups vaccinated you drop 99% of the hospitalisations. In which case when that is done let me shake someone's hand

In fairness, there was no time to prepare really. Wasn't that fussed.

Same here. Although if we're lucky and its quiet on Christmas Eve we get to leave an hour early. Of course it won't be quiet as we've got rid of so many staff, blaming it on covid, those of us left are now swamped with work. Still at least I'm one of the lucky ones that still has a job.

Covid has really highlighted how fucked my work life balance is, especially when I've working from home and can't blame having no time on being stuck in commuter traffic every day.

New strains happen all the time, there's already multiple strains of Covid-19 so try not to get too down about it. This sort of thing is expected and the vaccines shouldn't be impacted.

If you look back the strain that came out of Wuhan originally has pretty much gone now, think there was 8 major strains back in the summer so this is just one more on the list. Think they're over playing this as its a get out for not putting the right restrictions in place for Christmas.

Exactly, Virus's mutate it's hat they do and usually they'll mutate to be more transmittable but less deadly as virus's don't want to kill their hosts.

The government took the economic rather than health decision to put London in tier 2 and it blew up in their faces so they are using this variant as a smoke screen.

you're right to be sceptical (we've been trying to tell you for ages ) but the program is underway now so we're getting there slowly, keep positive mate.
And a quiet Christmas never hurt anyone! Your liver will be delighted!
