Test and trace bizarrely keeps getting brought up as this big failure when in actual it’s not at all. Initial tracing wasn’t good (and money wasted) but has since improved significantly. With hindsight it would’ve been better to have a central hub and then regional teams but either way significant resource/private sector assistance would’ve been required.

It’s the testing side of things which is where the billions go and its pretty impressive - daily capacity of 800k+ (87m in total) 90%+ turnaround in 24 hours, one of the best (if not the best) genomic sequencing in the world, which is now allowing us to spot variants and deploy surge asymptomatic testing in areas.

Both are decent examples of private and public sector working well in tandem

it cost 22 billion, a colossal amount.
The woman responsible for the biggest data breach in history was put in charge.
Today it was announced that there are 6 people with the new Brazilian variant in the country and we've lost one of them.

The 22bn relates to all the testing as well Clint.

The fact we’ve spotted that new variant in the testing is good going. The fact that the missing person didn’t filling in their contact details isn’t !

ps I’d written previous post before hearing some of Hancocks ramblings (I’ve just got it on now and he actually mentions private and public sector working together)....just to be clear, I’m not Matt Hancock

I think that’s a little overly conspiratorial (is that a word ?!) SBD. The vaccine programme is clearly linked to the NHS and we all know GP practices are currently delivering a lion share of the doses as with flu jab every year. like everything though, there are various others involved in its successful rollout....logistically assistance was provided by the army and there’s been thousands/tens of thousands of public volunteers. One of the main reasons we have been able roll out at pace was due to procurement and Kate Bingham being in charge of it, which many in the media moaned was cronyism at the time (even though she did it for free). Compare that to PPE procurement which was shambolic albeit during unprecedented times. Finally the bold move by PHE/JVCI/government to roll out single doses to give at least provide partial protection appears (currently - don’t worry NW, I’m not getting ahead of myself 😉) to have been a sensible decision....hopefully it remains that way

Fair enough points and maybe it is a bit conspiratorial.

Not sure I agree on the test and trace. For £12bn quid I'd expect a lot better from the start, esp when there was a system already available at much cheaper cost that would've probably been better, certainly initially. Testing has improved but took a while to get going and certainly earlier on never got close to the benchmarks and required some verbal gymnastics as they were using the figure of tests done but saying x number of people was the aim. The number of people tested was roughly half that of the tests done due to two different types of test on each individual. I've no problem with that IF you say we intend to do this many tests but they clearly tried to sell it as people being tested.

Also on the testing there were NHS labs saying they had spare capacity but this wasn't being used in favour of private testing labs. Maybe it was genuinely because they wanted that lab capacity for 'normal' NHS operation, but surely with a pandemic in full force and much normal operation suspended it'd just make sense both from a public health and cost perspective to use the lab capacity we're already paying for rather than private?

Still feel the point stands on it being referred to as NHS Test and Trace by govt when much of it has been outsourced to private enterprise yet the vaccine system doesn't get the same recognition.

I can understand the desire with the T&T as NHS is a brand people are likely to get on board with, so increases the chances people will download the app get tested etc compared to referring to it as Serco or whoever. But then surely the same argument would be used for the vaccination programme to encourage take-up yet they're not doing the same thing and that just seems odd to me - you'd either refer to both as NHS or neither.

I believe you're not Matt Hancock - you seem far too switched on to be him.

I’d honestly thought the vaccine programme was classed as the NHS vaccine. Sure I’ve seen it on the gov sites called that.

From memory, the testing to start had elements of the opposite, loads of private/Uni labs offering their facilities but PHE wanted it centralised. I can’t recall the NHS labs having capacity but presume that would be as much for their own testing

ps I’m not defending everything serco/private sector has done throughout the pandemic by the way...don’t get me started on some of the PHE contracts (I hope a full investigation is carried out once the pandemic is done) I just think it’s not as bad overall as is sometimes portrayed

The testing was a disaster as well and needed to be bailed out by the DH as they didn't even have contracts in place to buy reagents and consumables from day 1 (this is a stone cold fact)

Japan asks China to stop using anal swabs on its citizens

The Japanese government has asked Beijing to stop taking anal swabs from its citizens to test for coronavirus, saying the procedure causes psychological pain.

Beijing has not yet responded and it is not known how many Japanese citizens have been subjected to the procedure.

It comes after some Chinese cities started using the swabs to detect potential COVID-19 infection to limit transmission.

US diplomats in China claimed last month that they had been told to take the tests - but the claim was denied by China's foreign ministry.

They looked at me funny at the Ricoh when I did that. Just shows I was right.

Not sure that the middle of a pandemic with 120k dead is the right time to be asking for money to improve your already lavish home.

We know what'll happen, a load of rich businessmen will donate and they will receive government contracts in return in the future for 10+ times the value they donated.

You almost have to be impressed with how brazen they are with their corruption.
