We just don't have the bottle, nous, belief or confidence to go any further right now.

Remember when Spain were perennial losers. Tournament after tournament.

I hope it will come good for England, but we just don't quite have the belief in ourselves

Had we won tonight it would have given the whole country such a lift. Alas, it was not to be.

To be honest, I would have given the pen to the likes of Bellingham.

I honestly don't think Kane would have been labelled a bottler. It was just an option.

Had it not been Kane's own club goalkeeper in goal, then yes, 100% Kane. Every time. But I did say to myself as soon as we were awarded the pen, that maybe Kane shouldn't take that one. I just could sense he was going to miss.
Jesus. No one other than Kane was taking that pen. He missed, it happens. Makes it no less gut wrenching however.

Gutted. Probably should’ve won. Got it right tactically. Players gave it their all. Just wasn’t our day. Kane missing a penalty sums things up well. Been another good ride.

Currently working out if we stay or go home. On to Naples in March.

Considering we lost, I don't see how we got it right tactically whatsoever.

We did better in the second half until Giroud scored but in the first half we were dreadful and went in a goal down which meant we were chasing the game. The substitutions he made were completely wrong in the latter stages as well.

The response to the result kind of sums us up doesn't it. Other countries go mad and demand change when they get knocked out, we compliment the team n a good effort and extend the managers contract

We talk like we support a team that wasn't really expected to get out of the group stage not like a team who should be challenging

Not like this is a one off, we regularly fail when we play a 'good' team

Id agree with that if we hadn’t reached the semi and final if the last two tournies

Just didn’t have rub of the green. Standard

England have beaten a previous winner in a knockout game apart from the 66 final.

Now we have a good team that’s what we need to change.

We don’t know how to beat major nations, since we didn’t qualify for World Cup 94 this is our record:

Euro 96: Holland Spain Germany won 2 lost 1
World Cup 98: Argentina Lost
Euro 2000: Germany Portugal won 1 lost 1
World Cup 2002: Argentina, Brazil - won 1 lost 1
Euro 2004: France, Portugal lost 2
World Cup 2006: Portugal lost
World Cup 2010: Germany Lost
Euro 2012: France, Italy drew 1 lost 1
World Cup 2014: Italy - lost
Euro 2016: didn’t play anyone decent
World Cup 2018 - Belgium - lost 2
Euro 2020: Germany, Italy won 1 lost 1
World Cup 2022: France lost
So basically
Won: 4, Drew 1, Lost: 14 since 1996 and including Belgium

When it comes to it we don’t have what it takes to beat the major nations.

include Italia 90 and Euro 92, you can add a draw against France and Holland, defeat against Italy and Germany and an extra victory against Belgium.

We bottled the final against the Italians and because a few bot accounts in the middle east made some racist tweets, the team got let off.

Kane missed today. What will the reaction to that be?

Facts are, we struggle against decent opposition in serious matches. We are weak mentally and the French were just a bit organised. They played us like a flute really. We didn't show enough balls today and I certainly won't be celebrating failure.

We’ve got attacking threat in spades. Maybe lacking at the back, but just a more ruthless, convicting manager away from that extra mile.

Saka had to go off. Rashford, Sterling and Mount were good when they came on. With regards to Giroud fair play to him. Went round every single one of our players and showed his class as a man.

You've obviously been out in the sun too long.

Sterling was good when he came on?

Go and have a nap.

Not really. Ccfc have never won at Preston - it’s no reason other than we hadn’t on those days

He caused Hernandez problems. His record and experience at international level speaks for itself. We needed a goal and based on those two things, very few players are more qualified to come on and help get us one.

Cov bias aside. Maddison sat on the bench twiddling his thumbs is a travesty.

I said he would miss it before he took it. As he stepped up. A few others on here said the same. It just didn't feel right. I also said he would probably blast it and if he did, it would probably go over the bar.

You do whatever it takes to win. Any other keeper, then definitely Kane, without any shadow of a doubt. He's our penalty taker, but he just looked like he was going to miss.

He was absolutely useless, as he largely is in any big game. Bringing him on was the wrong decision and it proved true.

Rashford came on at 85 minutes. Grealish at 90+6. His substitutions were poor and he got it all wrong. Ignoring that just makes you look silly.

I don’t think any of us really know if he was ever going to be fit enough or ready enough to make a difference tonight - especially for a player with so little international experience.

Any England manager for the next few years is going to have this problem - unless they play some kind of comedy 3-2-5 formation, there’s always going to be someone sat on the bench who fans are convinced could be the difference maker.

Yeah Grealish with 2 minutes left of injury time was bizarre. Running down the clock when we're losing.....

Most goal involvements for any English player since August 2021.

Bringing on Mount ahead of him was the final straw for me. Yes we don’t know if he could do the business but stats alone would suggest he at least deserves an opportunity to show if he can rise to the level.

There are arguments for every player. He can bring on Maddison (although I would suggest the last few minutes of a WC QF aren’t the best place to test players at a new level), but if he doesn’t change the game then it’s people screaming about why he didn’t bring on Grealish (or Rashford, or Wilson, or Sterling, or Mount) instead. He can bring on a player like Mount - who comes on and instantly changes the game - and still get slated, apparently. Such is life when you have a squad this unbalanced.

It’s not an easy job, but Southgate got it right a lot more than he got it wrong this tournament. If Kane buries the second penalty like he should have then it’s not even a debate.

Other than that I don’t think he touched the ball.

Safe substitution, just like all his other decisions.
Rubbish. If Maddison had come on and instantly won a penalty you’d have been patting yourself on the back so hard your ribcage would have flown out.
