The great Colins, Calderwood and Hendry kept R9 off the scoresheet in '98. I have a soft spot for Scotland due to my heritage and I had a Scotland shirt back then and was getting ripped by schoolmates. They all thought he'd tear Scotland a new one etc. Not that day. Brasil won due to an O.G. IIRC.

Ronaldo is the best number 9 I can remember though tbh. His physical abilities + technical ability were scary.

Hendry wasn't a bad defender , john Collins was a cracking little player too

Tommy Boyd, remember it relatively well. Tbf we take the piss out of Scotland but that's another team that were far better then than now.

See Sky have Harry McGuire in team of the tournament .
No problem with this tbf.
Christ. Feel like there's a desperate drive to try and erase everyone's memories of how constantly awful he is at Man Utd. Admittedly he was OK, but team of the tournament? Only Bellingham from England deserves to be in that, he was consistently brilliant.

Maguire responsible for 2 goals England conceded by losing his players .. totally shite and a massive agenda to make him look better than he is

Southgate knew he wouldn’t get near a job in the top league and would struggle to get anything in the champ.

£8 million a year for a part time job, the players say they want him to stop hardly a surprise if they had said he is shit he would never have picked them.

No bottle at the fa and it makes their life easy as they don’t need to search for a replacement.

Weird - that fear hasn’t stopped England players trying to knife the manager in the past.

Who would you have as a replacement?

Morocco done for at least the draw there.
Denied absolute nailed on pen .
I'm not even sure the push was in the area. Besides, Gvardiol had a least as good a penalty shout in the same phase just before that, general shit refereeing.

This bunch of players are soft.

I would go European and would be tempted by Franck at Brentford or Jose as he is the opposite of Southgate somebody who has actually won things and you would imagine he couldn’t turn it toxic in the short time he has the players. Unfortunately the elite managers all have top club jobs like Klopp and Pep.

Do you honestly see Southgate winning anything he was most famous as a player for missing a penalty and doing a pizza add.

Well it worked great the last two times we bought in a manager from Europe who’d won a lot of stuff at club level. May as well take the highest scoring, closest-knit team at the World Cup and parachute in Mourinho - what could possibly go wrong?

Even now I would fancy him to get more out of the players than Southgate, it depends how you look at success to the fa a nice quarter final and not any hassle is a success, when they should have said to Southgate win it or get out, I think England had the best group of players in the tournament this was a failure and like yesterday a want to sit back has cost.

The only country to ever win a Euro or a World Cup with a manager not from that countries place of birth is Greece in 2004.

People are even suggesting Eddie Howe and even saying he could take it on a part time and keep the Saudi job. He’d cry and flounce out after the first press conference following a defeat. You are really looking at Lampard or Gerrard

To soon for all of the options there and for Lampard it should always be to soon.

I would imagine in early world cups etc most of the managers would be home born managers, it should be the best man for the job not birth place.

Someone was making the point on 5 live the other day that coaches should have the same eligibility rules as players I think I agree tbf

It’s international football - the manager really should be English.

It’s one thing for smaller nations without the same funding or football tradition. But we can’t claim to be a top football nation with a divine right to be winning tournaments if we don’t even have an English manager capable of managing a team of English players.

Right decision re: Southgate imo. People underestimate what a job he's done in completely transforming the mentality & spirit in the squad & also galvanised the fanbase in the process.

International football is completely different to club football, especially in tournaments when you have literally a few days between games, not knowing your opposition much in advance etc. it is difficult to work on intricate tactical plans.

That said, he clearly has weaknesses & his ability to change the flow of games is of real concern. That doesn't have to mean changing the man at the top though, I'd much prefer to keep Southgate in charge but bring in some more tactical minds amongst the coaching staff.

Blimey how many more staff does he need to cover his weaknesses, he has far to much faith in the players that have come through the system he will always trust a Mount over a Maddison.

I disagree, there are many people who can't stand watching Gareth southgates England... the fans in general have always been there

We've also won nothing , in an era where most of the so called best sides are pretty poor , a luxury most England managers never had ..

He's failed

Let's also add that the euros and World Cup from this point on will be watered down further with more crap sides, we've had 1 euros like it already
