TAA is a good tool to have, he could be the one to unlock those stubborn defences England have struggled against in previous tournaments.

We can play more defensive against the bigger teams.

Will say the CBs look very thin on the ground. Desperately need a breakthrough there. Hopefully Colwill can push on

Just watched the U21s beat Portugal to reach the Euros semi final.

Colwill looks class, really hope he gets game time at Chelsea next season as he isn't far off a squad spot for England at least.

Also Trafford the Goalkeeper looks excellent.

All in all a very promising bunch coming through 🦁🦁🦁

Watched every game so far. They are a talented bunch. Today was by far and away their worst performance of the tournament.

Thought they were decent first half but froze a bit after the break, let Portugal get the upper hand in the second. Defence did very well though

Euro 2028 to be hosted in the UK and Ireland. How many supporter points do we need for that?

Rather it wasn’t but we can make the best of it. Got an excellent opportunity to do well again.

Another amazing squad picked by Southgate, heard his dreadfully dull interview where he said hard to pick Coady in the championship but could pick Maguire from the Man Utd reserves and Henderson.

Such an old pals club with the press they gave him such an easy ride and were virtually apologising for any semi difficult questions.

He hasn’t played at CB in almost a year but if that’s the best suggestion then maybe Maguire isn’t so bad an option
When did Trent Alexander-Arnold last play in midfield for Liverpool before Southgate put him there? Burn has played CB often enough.

Daft argument. Clearly one of Southgate’s trusted players and has tended to perform fairly well for England. If there was an outstanding candidate he was keeping out then fair enough, but beyond him we’ve got Craig Dawson and Adam Webster. Long-term I’d be interested to see what Jarrad Branthwaite has to offer but he’s made less than 10 PL starts.

The one omission that surprises me is Ben White but I’m assuming there’s some ingrained issue there post-World Cup.

He goes past the halfway line too often for Southgate’s liking.

Even if he isn't actually playing matches? What happened to calling players up based on form for their clubs?

Surprised Sterling hasn’t been included as has started this season very well, oh yeah forgot Southgate doesn’t pick players on form.

Besides Rice and Phillips, Oliver Skipp at Spurs for one
It’s a fair shout but not one worth throwing rotten eggs at the manager for imo

Henderson is clearly still good enough to get into the Liverpool side, Klopp only let him go reluctantly. The Phillips inclusion is much more strange imo.

Maguire has not played much club football but has been reliable for England, so in the absence of any proper alternatives then it makes sense to keep including him. West Ham bidding £30 million for him suggests it’s not just Southgate who rates him.

There is plenty of youth and attacking quality in the squad - some of it in place of old scapegoats like Sterling, but apparently he should be back in now? - although Southgate will never please the FPL crowd. Oh well, another three points on the way.

My point is more that given the opposition, giving some previously untested players a chance to impress is worth trying. Particularly in Henderson’s case given that he has just dropped his intention to take club football seriously and isn’t getting any younger.

There are nine players in the squad with five caps or less, two of them debutants. Much more than that and suddenly you get people moaning he’s not taking the games seriously enough etc etc

As we can see with our own team the benefit of having a core of people who have played together is a safe route - new talent has to be introduced along with the core

In fairness you asked what the issues were with Henderson and Maguire specifically and who people would rather be selected, you got an answer.

I'll also happily admit that Southgate has never convinced me as manager and there's some bias in there around that.

That’s fine. Personally I don’t think his position is undermined by a failure to pick Newcastle’s LB and Oliver Skipp
