There was never any chance of it. It was a random rumour made up by the Tories.

Most wealth in this country is housing or pensions so if people want a wealth tax that’s probably where it would fall. It’s not like we’ve got people sat about with stacks of gold coins under their bed.

Many of these transport issues could be alleviated by not taking another 600,000 people every year. Someone mentioned, we’ve not reached our ‘peak’ but what is our peak ? 80 million, 100 million ? We are becoming a nation of housing estates without any accompanying services.

As a rough rule of thumb those most concerned with immigration also tend to delve into climate change denial. See any reform party spokesperson as an example. So you’re talking about a scenario that they don’t believe in. To them it’s just all project fear, we’ve had enough of experts etc.

Successive governments have utterly failed the country, I’m not sure rail links are the best yardstick though.

There’s the not so minor difference that the UK is an island and does not share a customs border with any of its neighbours. So comparison with EU countries is flawed from the get go.

The railway infrastructure is a mess though. Outsourcing rather than out and out privatising/nationalising the railway has led to worst of both worlds. The private company who runs the government contract has no competition, is usually picked on costing the least so the service and cost we get is poor.
