All the science boffins appear genuinely concerned about the spread of new strain but agree, the media, like throughout the pandemic, love to whip up further panic ! Like they have done with the French port border issue - whilst we might run out of certain items of fruit/veg for a short period we aren’t going to starve, however, they then cause panic buying which leads of stock shortages of other unrelated items ie bog rolls !!!

This one is quite a bit more transmissible than 'vanilla' Covid but if it is shown to be no more dangerous once in the body I'm not *too* concerned.

Yeah, I should’ve clarified, all the scientists I’ve heard talking about it are concerned about transmissibility, and that leading to more cases and inturn strain on nhs etc (rather than it being more dangerous)

In my optimistic world I’m hoping if it’s more contagious they ultimately find its mutated to be less dangerous....we can but hope !

Fekkin got it for Christmas. Had test at Ricoh yesterday and just found out. Typical, worked right throughout lockdown helping keep others safe with sanitation stations and screens etc, now looking forward to break and seeing family and can't go! Plenty others worse in hospital I know, but still majorly pissed off!
Shit timing mate, just hope it doesn't bite you too hard and the rest of your family are OK. Enjoy Xmas as best you can, and hopefully a win on boxing day.

Midlands could be upgraded to Tier 4 as of Boxing Day, meeting happening tomorrow to decide
What on earth is going on? Wednesday Johnson was having a go at Starmer for suggesting tighter restrictions were needed a Christmas. Saturday they announce tier 4 restrictions in London and the South East saying they are needed to stop the new variant spreading round the country. Now, on only the third day of tier 4 restrictions, they're talking about putting the whole country into that tier on Boxing Day.

I'm guessing they've been persuaded by a few journalists questioning them yesterday on not reviewing the tiers sooner than planned.

Sounds like literally all bets are off in terms of previous restrictions/tier plans. Even talk of schools being closed for January as they think it ‘might’ transmit more easily between kids compared to previous strains/variants. Guess they’ll know more following further research now they know what they’re looking for/at.

By all accounts we might have shot ourselves in the foot a bit by actually having very good genomic surveillance/kind of testing that can spotted the sequencing changes (all above my GCSE science knowledge maybe BSB or other science bods will know more ?). Apparently we do way more Genomic surveillance than most/all other countries. Could’ve even started elsewhere but nobody else has spotted it til now.

Let’s hope it’s not as bad as first feared and transmission isn’t as rapid as they have modelled. As BSB mentioned and by all accounts it’s no more dangerous. Makes the AZ/Oxford vaccine sign off even more important though....let’s all hope this happens in coming days ! 🤞

Ps should've kept our heads down China style, waited for it to be common everywhere then flagged it - kidding obviously !

I ain't bothered about Boris or conservatives, I am how ever bothered about corbyn and his stance to go against the British people and scrap the referendum results, that's why they got my vote this time around, and honestly if Labour don't sort there shit they will get it next time around aswell.
Of all the problems in the short, medium and long term facing the future of this Country caused by the misguided catastrophe that is Brexit, this for me is one of the worst ‘ and definitely the most annoying.
People like this who previously had no interest in, opinion on, or understanding of politics were hoodwinked in with tales of a phantom enemy and fantasy’s of nationalism and faux patriotic bravado.
And now they won’t Fuck off...

The lag between cases and deaths is longer than 3 weeks. Cases to hospitalisations is 2-3 weeks at least and deaths are a week or two more. There will be a few days of 1k + deaths in the first week or two of January at least
So case's this time around are likely a third+ higher than the original April peak .
Circa 130000-140000 thousand cases a day

Why should I fuck off? And what's to say j had no interest in politics prior? Brexit will do wonders for this country, probaly why Multipul other EU country's are waiting to see how we do before telling them to fuxk off thereselfs, kinda fun t how it's all this "everyone has a opinion" until you disagree then you go all bitchy, if your that bothered about the EU I'm certain it wouldn't take you long to get a visa and fuxk off to France, Spain, Portugal, Turkey, Netherlands, Belgium ect.

Fwiw I think most voted based on immigration. There will be lots who didn't but most did. I voted out. After 4 years and with what's going on elsewhere, I reckon if the EU said you can look after your borders but anyone who's there can stay and we'll just carry on as before, then most would say fair enough crack on. For democracy sake it needs carrying through to some degree but 4 years is huge and I'm sure they'd all cancel it if they could.

You literally struggle to string more than a couple of words together, and yet you speak in such a disgusting way about someone that would have began life with no more advantages than you ‘yet went on to achieve so much.

I’m not even sure why you’re so anti EU, you seem to be writing in a mixture of most member states languages.

We always had control over our own borders, for proof look to the member states shutting theirs to us this week.

Not entirely sure I agree but certainly lost my appetite for another Brexit row with an outcome that none of us can influence, so I'll leave that to the other thread 😀

Sequencing the genome of a virus is quite easy to do these days, but you would need to co-ordinate samples being sequenced from the overall test pool, which is how they are even able to pinpoint where the mutation first arose. We should still of course be cautious awaiting the tests on the lethality of this new strain compared to the vanilla one, but I am quietly optimistic that it will be no worse.

For those concerned about it cheating the vaccine, the yearly flu shot is also changed every year because influenza also takes on different strains regularly enough. The government's focus must remain on rolling out the vaccine to the most vulnerable in the shortest time.
