You can buy a house not too far from me for less than 40k. But people still rent. Why is this?

How about what would happen if these landlords didn't buy properties to rent out. Where would those who can't buy live?
It's called "Capitalism" It's here to stay

I hope that a reliable antibody test can at least ensure a return to work for some

It wouldn’t. Even at 95% specificity it’d leave too many false positives when done at scale.

Best estimates are <10% of the population have been infected already, so it’s needle in a haystack finding them.

I think maybe age or industry related returns. But I think the idea of antibody passports is fanciful.

Aside from anything else the economy is going to be so depressed through caution and lack of an entertainment industry and all that supports it that many businesses are better off carrying on furlough until a vaccine than trying to open up again and probably going to the wall through lack of business.

So we've furloughs etc. here in Hungary.
"Non-essential" businesses going bust
Hungarians generally don't have savings or credit cards so things pinching after 5 weeks. Most live pay cheque to paycheque - utility bills etc. still coming in (here 60 days to settle or you're disconnected - no ifs or buts)

So now the MPs take a 11.4% pay increase!!!

A populist right wing government not in it for the people? Who could possibly have seen that coming?

Has the response got the disease under control?
Seems low from the outside.

we have strange official numbers and no-one is allowed to question govt or medical people under the new laws here!!

Many cases not registered as people just told to self-quarantine and only getting tested if symptoms seriously deteriorate after a week. Get a red sticker for the front door and police check them daily. Big fines if not following the rules.

Normalize our fatalities against UK population (times by 7) and it's around 120-140 deaths per day in hospitals and around 1400 infected in hospital. Think around 70% of cases in the Budapest metropolitan area - not many other large towns or cities here.

Big problem now in care homes.

But like rest of Eastern Europe we went into controlled lockdowns (that police are enforcing) very early because these countries knew there was no chance of health systems handling the level of outbreaks that were happening in Western Europe. Many of our doctors and nurses work in Germany and Austria (same with Czech and Polish doctors and nurses) or in private practice for West European health tourists. 2 Austrian regions had to "force" Hungarians to stay as they made up over 30% of their medical and care home staff according to our national press

We are 3-4 weeks behind UK but people here take the self-quarantining and social distancing far more seriously than UK population seemed to. (also more households here have elderly relatives living with them so more careful).

The daily briefings here are given by Chief Medical officer (flanked by uniformed police and border guard representatives), Gives a far more "unwritten" threat than watching the likes of Gove, Raab etc. :)

Forgot to mention that for some reason Govt started clearing 36,000 hospital beds last week without a clear reason why (and doctors aren't allowed to tell us why)

I'm guessing the North-West rise in numbers (apparently against the trend) may also have been fuelled by the Athletico v Redshite match.....stupid cunts.

Those stereophonics gigs look like they were prime transmission grounds given the profile of patients in some south Wales icus

Yeah, I follow one of the consultants on twitter, age profile is pretty low compared with the average.

I see Cummings has written a blog (purportedly representing the government) that attempts to rebut the assertions in the Sunday Times article, but in many cases just strengthens them! He's a card isn't he

If by card you mean prick then yep.

And as the poster above says it was madness to allow away fans to attend that bin dippers vs athletico match

Cheltenham festival was a joke to be honest in regards to the response to this. Shouldn’t have gone ahead. They made a big song and dance about the hand gel stations or whatever they called them. I saw one with 6 hand gel pumps attached to it. And it was disgusting. Would have been worse off using it. Other than that, no other provisions.

Said it before and I’ll say it again. Really wish I didn’t go. Gave in to peer and beer pressure.

whereas at the time the armchair experts on here said that anyone raising that concert was a "do gooder" and any concern was ridiculed.

Is there really pressure being applied by some to get schools open .
I see they're still shut in Hubei province with only the prospect of seniors sitting exams going back on May 6th.

PPE is on the way? I thought there wasn't any need as there is no shortage and it's fake news?

Story changes every day doesn't it. I'm waiting for the day they really jump the shark and say PPE doesn't even exist and never has.

Yes, as I said the other day it's amazing how often we are being asked to believe in two conflicting things.

Are hospital gowns really only one use??? That's madness.
The ones me and my colleagues have to use are, bearring in mind we have to use gowns , visors and masks , long gloves . If you fancy a sip of water you have to take everything off then put brand new stuff on

Shouldn’t that be Dominic Raab? Abbott’s thing is maths (actually it’s diabetes but still) it’s Raab that didn’t realise Dover was important for continual trade.

Also, I say Johnson is dim and people rally round saying he can’t be because he got a degree in Classics from Oxford after having gone to Eton. I notice these people are a lot quieter about a black woman not from a privileged background who got her History degree from Cambridge.

(I don’t even rate Abbott, just find this stuff off)

I don't think he was conveying a message.
Just making a joke .
TBF there are many candidates of the other persuasion who could be substituted in for her .
Of course it is possible he holds a bias for one party or the other .
